Red Sox Score Early, Down Tigers 7-2

This one was done after one.

Max Scherzer, who has struggled to get outs this year, gave up 5 runs in the first as Dustin Pedroia took him deep over the left field wall for 2, and David Ortiz hit the fourth longest home run in Comerica Park's history 450 feet for 3 more. If that wasn't enough, Papi crushed another one--this one with the bases empty--in the fourth inning, and Bill Hall finished it with a pinch hit solo shot in the top of the ninth.

Clay Buchholz only gave up 1 run, but was really pretty unimpressive, allowing 5 walks as his control was prone to disappearing. 3 strikeouts are usually not enough to bail out that kind of performance, but the Tigers could only grab 3 hits, letting Clay get 19 outs. Daniel bard was a little shaky in relief, giving up a run in the 8th thanks to a wild pitch and a horrible throw to first, but the Tigers never got anywhere near the Sox.

With the win, the Red Sox are two games over .500, going into a very favorable game where Jon Lester will take on Dontrelle Willis. 3 game over would be a new season high...

Make Ortiz the full time DH already!

He should be in against D-Train tomorrow – that guy is good to hit.

by alskor on May 14, 2010 10:43 PM EDT reply actions

Ortiz

Has always been decent against lefty starters. Last year he was better against lefty starters than righty starters, hit (I think) the Sox only HR of Sabathia, etc. He has struggled against all sorts of LOOGYs (both last year and in the past). Let him play against lefties. Pintch hit Lowell if absolutely necessary.

Also one of those Ks last night continued a trend I mented a few weeks ago of Ortiz getting absolutely no repect from the umps. He checked his swing on one of thse punchouts. I bet 1/3 of those Ks are crap (like Wednesday’s Scott special).

by Buzzy on May 15, 2010 7:49 AM EDT up reply actions

worth mentioning

the “left-handed starter” stat on baseball-reference is kinda odd. It is his line for the whole game when a lefty starts. So, for example, if a lefty started but got knocked out after two innings and righties pitched the rest of the game, each at bat for the game would count in the “against left handed starters” stat.

it’s kinda weird, I’m not sure if that’s what you’re looking at, but it doesn’t strike me as especially useful.

Bill Hall is hitting lefties better than Pedroia this year

Maybe we should sit Dusty.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

the only reason i might disagree

is that we need to show value in Lowell so we can trade him.

Otherwise, I totally agree.

by mmmmm on May 15, 2010 12:04 AM EDT up reply actions

I seriously doubt we'll ever be able to trade him.

In the meantime, I’d continue to use him against tough LHPs, or low arm slot LHPs and to spell guys. DTrain is the kind of LHP where you should be starting Ortiz.

by alskor on May 15, 2010 1:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Any team that would want Lowell knows his value.

We have to worry about winning and putting the best lineup out there.

keep the platoon…. it works.

by Mister Snitch on May 15, 2010 3:22 AM EDT up reply actions

RIP the Platoon!

The platoon is deathly ill.. if Ortiz can do some damage against Dontrelle it might not make it through tomorrow!:

Manager Terry Francona has been using Ortiz in a platoon with Mike Lowell at designated hitter, starting him against righthanders. But Francona said he would "probably’’ use Ortiz against Tigers lefty Dontrelle Willis tonight.

"I don’t want to get in the way of getting him hot,’’ Francona said.

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2010/05/15/rejuvenated_ortiz_two_hrs_takes_sox_for_a_ride/?camp=localsearch:on:twit:sox

Unequivocally, this is the right move IMO. I’m pretty excited to see this. Ortiz in May (8 games): .333/.361/.818. 5 HRs in his last 8 games. Francona would have to be out of his mind to sit this guy right now. If it was Francisco Liriano (a tough lefty)… sure. Dontrelle Willis? That would be nuts.

Ok, it "works"

However, if we want Ortiz or Lowell to be the best they can be, we need one to DH full time. We can’t have them alternating games. Baseball is a game of routine and rhythm.

You same guys

were ALL FOR dumping Ortiz when he was ‘Big Popup’. Now he got into a short-term groove, and you want to dump Lowell from the DH spot.

Ortiz was platooned, and got hot. WIll he STAY hot when he is no longer platooned? Obviously, Tito wants to find out. Mainly, though, Tito just wants to mollify the sulking Ortiz. (Lowell, as always, is far more stoic, with less need to have his ego ‘massaged’.)

WHY has the platoon worked? Dunno. Lots of theories but who really knows? Did Ortiz ‘just happen’ to get hot, and the platoon had nothing to do with it? That’s what the front-runners are (now) claiming. But this is going to fail, and Papi will decline, ending up looking just as bad as he did before.

One more thing: The WHOLE TEAM did better with the platoon. WIthout even getting our missing outfielders back, with only that change, the team has picked up the pace (offensively, I mean, since that’s all that’s affected by the DH spot). That’s what we’re tossing away here: Something that actually WORKS, for something that did NOT work when we were spiraling downhill, challenging the O’s for that bottom spot. Remember?

OK. We didn’t learn the first time, obviously. Let’s find out the hard way.

by Mister Snitch on May 15, 2010 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I never wanted to dump Ortiz

He has far more upside than Mike Lowell. If Papi is done, the Sox need to acquire a bat. The Sox know this too. That’s why Tito wants to see Papi hit some lefties. This has nothing to do with massaging egos. Lowell is a classy player and I like him. But he isn’t a good enough hitter to DH regularly. If Ortiz can hit close to even his 2008 numbers, he is much better than Lowell.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on May 15, 2010 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

no you did not want to dump Ortiz

you have been consistent in that regard. But you were also not one of the posters I was referring to above, since you did not weigh in on the subject here.

find one post by me that was for dumping Ortiz, plz

I’ve always advocated playing Ortiz as our sole DH.

I’ve also advocated trading Lowell for whatever we can get for him. Even a couple of $M worth of salary relief would be good.

Lowell was making clear signs all winter that he was not going to be happy about losing his job. Hardly ‘stoic’. At any rate we all should refrain from trying to read into the behind-the-scenes character of any of these guys – we don’t know them. Period.

I do know that every one of his teammates who has spoken on the issue has defended Ortiz and advocated patience, knowing it was just a matter of time & at-bats. And you don’t get at-bats sitting on the bench.

The only at-bats I want Lowell to get are whatever might be necessary to showcase him for a trade. If even that.

by mmmmm on May 15, 2010 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I'll take your word for it

that you never advocated dumping Ortiz. I knew how Delaney felt, but beyond that I know I have seen these same screen names on or around posts saying Ortiz must go. I freely admit that I did not research each and every screen name before I posted. You say you never advocated dumping Ortiz, that’s fine. I believe you.

“Lowell was making clear signs all winter that he was not going to be happy about losing his job. Hardly ‘stoic’”

Compared with Ortiz’ behavior, Lowell’s been a model citizen. (And by the way, the media WANTED a story that Lowell was going to be a problem – much of what you think you know was manufactured.) Ortiz has been openly sulking – getting thrown out of games, for crying out loud – and there’s been nothing ‘behind the scenes’ about it. When did Lowell actually behave badly, during a game or anywhere on-camera, that we can observe? Big mistake bringing that up, you don’t have a leg to stand on.

“I do know that every one of his teammates who has spoken on the issue has defended Ortiz and advocated patience”

And they were going to do WHAT, instead? Attack Ortiz? Manny’s behavior, at its absolute worst, never caused any of his teammates to openly declare the guy had to go. You have to live with your teammates, and anyway it’s very much an us-against-the-world situation on most any (mentally) healthy ballclub. Only a club that’s disintegrating (and/or has some astoundingly bad citizens) engages in finger-pointing. (There are of course exceptions that prove the rule: The ‘Bronx Zoo’ Yankees, where turmoil was a way of life. But most people just don’t live like that.)

So these statements advocating patience for Ortiz mean absolutely nothing. Nobody is going to come out and say ‘that guy (who I sit next to on the bus, has the locker near mine, defended me during MY tough times, etc.) is DONE’. I mean, let’s face it, people don’t roll that way.

“you don’t get at-bats sitting on the bench”

By that rationale, Tek should be playing every day – same as Ortiz. Because being platooned has had nothing to do with Tek’s improved performance. Sitting him only hurts him.

Right?

And being platooned has had nothing to do with Ortiz’ improvement, either. It’s just a coincidence.

Right?

by Mister Snitch on May 15, 2010 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Compared with Ortiz’ behavior, Lowell’s been a model citizen.

That’s a joke. Go back the last two years and Mike bitches and moans all the time about playing time (after we got VMart, in the platoon this year & all spring) and trade rumors (last year with Tex, this spring).

When does Ortiz complain???

I never wanted to dump Ortiz.

I said there were three options that could help the team: release Ortiz, play Ortiz every day, or make Ortiz an every day bench player. The thing I wanted was for Tito to commit to a DH, either Lowell or Ortiz.

5.5 Acorns and counting down...

BB – see the sky isn’t falling – I think the Sox are progressing towards their mean and the the Yanks and Rays are regressing towards their mean. All three teams are outstanding – we knew the race would be a battle in the East this year – I am still not willing to write the Old Town Team off yet. So, here’s to hoping they stay in the fight and make the post season…

the schedules of the Sox, Rays and Yanks over the next 30 days before you start the 5.5 acorn count down. We will need broad shoulders. And some speed would help too.

I was at this game, and it was very enjoyable.

Buch impressed me because he managed to go six on a night when he had no control. Although, the Tigers don’t exactly have a great lineup.
