Game 4, Overflow Thread: Playing With Fire, Wakefield Style
Wake had been handling the Royals through 5. And then came the back-to-back shots in the 6th. What else do you expect?
Sox still on top 3-2 thanks to a 2-run shot by Drew.

of course, so is not scoring a run in the 9th
when we are behind. actually not scoring is worst.
sometimes it becomes a trade off.
it’s just like sometimes stolenbases are good, sometimes a waste of effort. there are “clutch times” for lack of a better term. this is when the game is on the line and opportunities are minimal.
plus, i think scooter had previously bunted safely for a hit. who’s to say he wouldn’t again – thus no out.
my thinking at the time last night was that 1 out man on 2nd, we needed 1 hit in 2 at bats to tie, versus man on 1st and needing two hits with 3 at bats (assuming no double play).
the key thought for the strategy was we needed a run.
besides all of that, i thought i was agreeing with you – “i’ll take a sacrifice bunt down 1………… but in no other ……”
i’m not following your posts. and what does “usg” mean?
Run expectancy
Its been a while since I dove into this, but someone put together some data at some point that showed that the probability of scoring a run (Run Expectancy) for the two situations of concern here are something like:
Man on 1st, No outs : ~0.92
Man on 2nd, 1 out: ~0.75
(Not exact numbers, but close, if my memory isn’t completely shot)
This makes it look like you shouldn’t bunt. But its deceptive – the first scenario still requires that the batter DO something and you have to factor in his success rates at various possible outcomes (getting a walk, getting a hit, bunting, etc.). I.E. – the 0.92 is factoring in that other events have to take place and the odds change with each step.
I’m betting someone has done a more exhaustive analysis of this.
+11111111111111111111111
good post.
good info and i think your numbers are right on – you still have some memory – so start drinking before it multiplies!
i based my stuff on expected run value, from page 134 moneyball. i screwed up. i assumed singles and counted the guy who gets the hit as a given, blah, blah. my error.
i found the matrix you may have alluded to – it matches your #‘s. it’s by a guy name tango.
good stuff.
now the $64,000 question – why did the sox bunt?
FUCK YOU TACO FUCK YOU FUCK YOU
