POLL: You Need to Win One Game -- Who Do You Start?
Everyone has talked about the debate about the Red Sox's "ace." Is it Josh Beckett, Jon Lester or John Lackey?
Let's just make a poll to answer this question: you have one game that you have to win, so who do you start on the mound?
Make sure to tell us why in the comments.

Not really fair
to ask this poll before Lester and Lackey and after Beckett got crushed.
Fair point.
Galactus does as he pleases. Because Galactus is drunk.

ACTUALLY, advanced metrics show that that wasn't "premature".

I took that into consideration for about three seconds
But honestly, if you can’t see past ONE bad Beckett start, then c’mon…

Lester
…is our ace.

Lester rocks.

I went Lester
Clearly everyone up there can win a big game. But Lester is more consistent in those big games, as far as I’m concerned. Plus, all other things being even, I’d go lefty over righty for my starter, probably because of delusion.
Agree on both the consistency part and having a lefty start. I’m also biased since he’s my favorite player.
I’m in the same boat there.

Yeah... lots of jadedness
I went Lester just because I’ve loved what he’s been showing the past 2 years, not to discount Beckett who would be the hands down ace on a good bunch of other teams besides ours
Homer: Kids, you tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is, never try.
It is all about future slopes.
Beckett’s slope surely seems downward or negative from now on, while Lester’s should be positive for a couple of years more! Over time from here on out, Beckett’s performances should get less and less dominant while the reverse is true of Lester. Lester is likely the ace now, but will surely pull away as the ace from now on at least compared to Beckett, IMO!
Lackey is more of an unknown, but I would guess his slope is more flat or zero for a while before it likely goes negative.
Is it about Future slopes - or is it about one game, for everything say, tomorrow
If that’s the case I still go Beckett over Lester based on his career in clinching games.
As good as Lester is and will be, he hasn’t done it yet, though I have no doubt he can and will.
I've expressed my man-crush
for Jon Lester. Enough said.
Whoever said it doesn't matter whether you win or lose, probably lost.
Lester
I think he’s poised to have a really great year. The ‘C’ is well behind him, I think he’s matured mentally, and he’s hitting what should be his golden years at age 26.

This is absolutey no disrespect to Beckett and Lackey...
…but Lester has stepped up, and he deserves it just as well..and he still has room to grow.
Based on today?
I’ll take Lester. But my answer is definitely swayed by Sunday night’s game, which isn’t necessarily fair.

sorry about that - I think the only thing that is really clear is - it's not Lackey.
Beyond that I still think Beckett is the guy.
As good as Lester is and can be right now, Beckett’s stats in series deciding games is outstanding.
Not saying Lester can’t or won’t be able to do that, I just believe the bird in hand is worth two in the bush.
Lester
Because game in and game out he gives his team a legit shot to win. Beckett is good and at times has better stuff but Lester is much more consistent
I'll put you through hell, but at the end of it all we'll be champions.
Lol

Where's the Pedro option?

I'd take vintage Pedro over Lester and Beckett.
Modern-day Pedro? Not so much.

True
Unless the game you had to win was a wrestling match against Don Zimmer.

Even then, I think I'd still take Lester or Beckett.
If Pedro could knock Zimmer down, think about the damage Josh or li’l Jonny could do.

I care less about modern-day Pedro's injuries, though

I went Lester
but I’m really interested to see how Lackey performs on the Red Sox- I like what I’ve heard from him about how he is approaching pitching in the AL East.
I change my mind
I want Lionel Messi starting. I don’t care if he doesn’t even know what baseball is, I think he can do anything.

Only sorta
US still has no real ability to compete, so I’m just focusing in on Manchester City and watching Lionel Messi become the best player in history.
Between the Red Sox, end of the EPL season, seeing how Barça finishes up, the World Cup, Indycar, FIA GT, Formula 1, ALMS, ELMS, Rolex and WRC, it’s gonna be a busy sports season.

you're a fan of manchester city ?
probs on the (real) football references today though!

Having no connection whatsoever to anything british
due to being of irish descent, I decided on a Manchester team due to my love of Joy Division / Buzzcocks, and I obviously couldn’t be a fan of ManUre, so I became a fan of City. And then they were bought by the arabs, and suddenly became good. It was fortuitous.
Now they just need to stop playing like garbage. The Burnley game was a step in the right direction.

Lester is my choice
With or without Beckett’s bad game last night.

Beckett
I am surprised by the confidence in Lester. Don’t get me wrong….he is a great pitcher. But let’s see him win some big games in Sept. and Oct.
Beckett has the credentials…..great signing by the Sox.

Beckett got his ass kicked in October 2008 while Lester was putting up a 2.36 postseason ERA.
He also pitched that clinching game of the World Series in ’07
In fact, September and October, Lester has a better career ERA than Beckett.

in about 1/2 the IP though
This is basically splitter hairs among quality pitching, but Beck’s ERA is 0.50 higher in twice as many innings.
Becks also has a better WHIP, k/9 and bb/9 ratios.
end of the day I feel good about either one, but Beck’s been there and done it where Lester is just getting to the party
Here's what I don't like about the big-game pitcher argument
I’ve been to Fenway, and I’ve been to other ballparks. Playing home at Fenway is an 81 game playoff series. The difference between a “big game pitcher” and someone who’s not is how well they deal with the pressure and stress of an important game- you know, a full house, screaming excited fans everywhere, the media ready to blame you if you make one bad move- that’s every day at Fenway.
Every pitcher who has success pitching at Fenway, I would argue, is a “big game pitcher.” I think Lester has proven he can handle that pressure over and over again- this is part of the reasoning why I feel like Buchholz, while he might come out successful for the Sox, has a better chance of being a much better pitcher on a different team (for the record, that doesn’t mean I necessarily want him to go, I don’t want the other teams to have better pitchers…)
Beckett
With the adrenaline going and if his curve is breaking, I like his poise and confidence on the mound.
This is the man that brought us a World Series in 2007 and shut down the Yankees as a rookie in 2003. The confidence and skill are there, so with his track record, Beckett.
Imagine if we get a duo like Beckett and Lester doing what Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling used to do with for the Diamondbacks in 2001. Epic World Series and extraordinary effort by both of them…

I voted Lackey why?
Stuffwhise he is probably only 3rd best of the group. He has mostly looked good in the playoffs though while Lester and Beckett have been disappointing the last 2 years. I just love the mental makeup of Lackey i feel like he thrives under pressure.

My answer changes
Depending on what team we’re facing and what time of year it is.
Lester: the first third of the season I’d be concerned starting Lester mostly due to the slow start last year. I would otherwise be more inclined to go with him facing AL West or Central teams (lack of familiarity), and would be confident anytime thereafter.
Lackey: I would also avoid early due to his history of early-season injury. However, if it’s a start against an AL East team, then I’m more inclined to pick him, again lack of familiarity being a strength. If there’s a mid-season start in the AL East, Lackey moves to the front of my line.
Josh: Lester’s slow start coupled with the Opening day dismantling of Tampa in 2009 still make me lean towards Josh early in the year. Yes, we all know the reputation he had (which is starting to erode) about shining in the playoffs. I’d start to lean away from him, like I would with Lester, when a team that’s seen them extensively is in the other dugout.
