Game 1, Overflow Thread 2: Beckett Struggling, Yanks Up, 5-1

BOSTON - APRIL 04: Former the Boston Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martinez greets the fans before the game against the New York Yankees on April 4, 2010 during Opening Night at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. (Photo by Elsa/Getty Images)

It hasn't been a good Opening Night so far for the Red Sox.

Josh Beckett has struggled, giving up five runs in 4.2 innings of work. The Red Sox offense hasn't helped out much, either. Adrian Beltre is responsible with a sac fly to center field. The Sox still have just one hit with play going into the bottom of the fifth.

Scott Schoeneweis struck out Curtis Granderson to finish the top of the fifth.

This frames the Beckett situation perfectly

He’s looking for Ace money, but the only Ace pitching tonight is on the other club. When you’re paying someone $18m a year, they don’t take massive dumps against your main rival like Beckett has shown he always does.

On our first 3 hour early dismissal a bunch of girls got into a fight in the media center and we lost our half day break privilege. What happened was that I was on deck with no outs with runners on third and second (maybe first). I remember thinking that we couldn’t possibly hit into a triple play. I was wrong. It didn’t help that we were forced to play another school’s varsity team who didn’t want to play us. Next practice, our coach gave us a long talk about getting back to the base when the ball is caught.

I liked how he used the same damn form letter approach of “Nerd in basement with naked lightbulb”, and “don’t watch the games”. TZ considers him quite impressive), and that Bill Russell’s unimpressive baseball statistics somehow discredit the stats.
