if 'learning to deal with pressure' is the real issue
…he’ll have to spend a year in Pawtucket learning to deal with THAT pressure. Then after a successful year at that level, he can come up to the bigs and wilt under THAT pressure. (He was terrible in Spring Training with the big club.)
His development seems to be on a par with Buchholz. With so much potential, you just keep hanging in there and hoping, and showing plenty of patience.

Fuentes "dinger" was an inside the park HR
Kid has some wheels and…nothing else for now.
Westmoreland recently asked his son how he was feeling, and the response the father received didn't surprise him. "I'm going to be in Portland next year," Ryan said.
That'd be my feeling too.
His start in Greenville is not making me change my opinion of that pick.

Really?
I’ve heard some good things. He’s really young. He’s gonna fill in and hit for some power IMO. It wasn’t necessarily going to happen in his first month of his first full season. We shall see.

Really. He's just hugely unimpressive to me as a first round pick.
He has speed, yes, but what else? All I see is a guy with wheels. He’s supposed to have a good contact bat, but I haven’t exactly seen that. His plate discipline is minimal, his power entirely hypothetical and not particularly projectable beyond maybe current Ellsbury or Pedroia levels. Quite frankly, comparing him to our 4th round pick Jeremy Hazelbaker, I just don’t see a ton of difference.
I see his cieling as being Ellsbury with maybe better reads, and I want more than that when I’m taking a risk on an athletic and unproven high school player in the first round.

I've never been able to come to terms with Fuentes as a first rounder.
Seems like to much risk for a speedy thin high schooler. I have looked at the pick as Ellsbury/Scott Boras insurance. Maybe by having Westmoreland, Fuentes, and Hazelbaker in the pipeline, the goal is to have at least one centerfield prospect with great speed ready by 2013 during Ellsbury’s last arbitration year as an option to help keep Boras from trying to negotiate with one of his 7-8 year contracts at crazy $$. If Boras started talking too many years, the FO would have the speed in the system needed to be able to say thanks but no thanks. It still does not justify using a first rounder for Fuentes. In 2013 Fuentes will be 22 and Hazelbaker will be 25 and having speed on the team is a nice change for Boston.
" Play Ball "
I think they just liked the kid.
He has a really nice feel for hitting. Makes great contact and squares the ball up well. Great plate coverage. He’s not super patient, but he controls the strikezone surprisingly well. He flies on the basepaths and defensively. I hardly think I’m alone in seeing near average power projection for him (maybe a 40-50), though obviously I don’t see him as a big HR guy. I’ve heard lots of positive stuff so far.
He’s a dynamic little player with tools that stick out. There’s a hell of a lot to like about Reymond Fuentes. You guys are far more down on him than most places. That was a good pick. This is the same stuff I heard about Casey Kelly last year. Everyone assumed he was just a signability guy, that the Sox didn’t really like him – not the case at all. They loved Kelly. Same thing with Fuentes. Not only that, but Fuentes wasn’t lasting 15 more picks either way. Its not like the Sox were the only team in on him. I liked the pick. It may not be a slam dunk superstar kind of pick, but it was good value for where we were and what it took to sign him and I really like his potential.

Kelly was a signability guy.
In that other teams weren’t willing to lure him away from Tennessee.
I’m sure other teams were in on Fuentes, but that doesn’t mean we should be. If he develops some power, and stops striking out like a slugger, and starts walking like a leadoff hitter, then he’ll have been worth it. But there’s so many damn maybes there.

Idea
Let’s give the kid a little more than 67 plate appearances before carving his career in stone.
I’m thinking 15 to 20 more and we’ll know everything he’ll do. Ever.
I'm not saying this because of his results to date.
I’m saying it because to change my opinions of him based on his scouting reports, tools, etc. I would need to have seen a very impressive start.

I’m liking this McGuiness kid.
I saw him in spring and had no clue who he was. But I’ve liked what I;ve seen from him.

Chris McGuiness
Age: 22
South Atlantic League age average for batters: 21.6
Greenville age average for batters: 20.9
He has a good plate discipline and an average power but as you can see below he’s older than the competition: Not something to write home about.

ok.
I like Derrick Gibson too

Damn
Triple A catcher Mark Wagner has a broken bone in his left hand – surgery Tuesday, out 6 to 8 weeks

Pawtucket roster question:
will AAA need to call up two players to take the place of Wagner and Matsuzaka tomorrow? They already have two catchers in Brown and Molina.
" Play Ball "
Brian Peterson looks to fill in for the injured Wagner in Pawtucket.
Haven’t heard who will take Matsuzaka’s spot on AAA roster yet.
" Play Ball "
One upside
Wagner can be put on the 60 day DL, buying us a 40 man roster spot…
…which we could have kept Kevin Frandsen with if it had happened a few days earlier…
