Minor Lines 4/25/10: The Home Run Race is On

Last year, Ryan Lavarnway lead the Red Sox' farm system with 21 home runs. It's beginning to look like that might not be enough this year. Lars Anderson, Ryan Kalish, Oscar Tejeda, Dan Butler (the Greenville Catcher), and Darnell McDonald (if you include major league home runs) are all on pace to reach 20 home runs with a full season. But none of them have as many as Lavarnway himself, who sits at 6 through just 15 games--on pace for over 40. Many of them probably won't keep pace, but the Sox are putting on a power show for now.

So let me get this right...

Reddick starts the season in a bad hitting slump…goes up to the show, gets a couple base hits…gets sent back down, and can’t hit again. Hmm. Let’s keep him on the big league roster.

If Lars keeps this up, will he be called up to AAA later this year?

Report: Red Sox sign Cuban Catcher Adalberto Ibarra

He gets a MLB deal (which does NOT mean he will play in MLB immediately – it only means he will immediately be placed on the 40 man roster). The terms are reportedly 5 years/ $4.3mm. He was a teammate of Jose Iglesias.

A rumor says “cuban catcher Adalberto Ibarra signed a deal worth 4.3 mil. with Boston.” Awaiting for confirmation.

http://twitter.com/qbano34/status/12745297798

According to cubanballplayers.com: Cuban Catcher Adalberto Ibarra has reached a Major League deal with the Red Sox, (5 year – $4.3 mil).

Adalberto Ibarra is a Red Sox
Written by Cubano on 25 April 2010

Former Camagüey standout Adalberto Ibarra has reached a Major League deal with the Boston Red Sox. The contract is a 5 year deal worth $4.3 million that includes a signing bonus of $1.5 million. The Red Sox see Ibarra as a future catcher.

Ibarra is a leader in and off the field. He is a very vocal player and plays the game the right way. He has an elegant batting stance and can hit to all fields.

Adalberto Ibarra becomes the second Camaguey player to land a Major League deal in less than a month. Earlier, Tampa Bay signed Leslie Anderson. Ibarra joins SS José Iglesias and OF Jorge Padrón in the Boston organization.

Here is some video: http://www.cubanballplayers.com/?p=1655

From the link above:

Catcher Adalberto Ibarra (Camagüey)

Ibarra has raised eye browns with his release time to second base. The ex Camaguey standout has posted 1.68-1.69 times to second-base well below the MLB average (1.75). Ibarra weights a solid 200 pounds and is very conscientious about his training regimen. Ibarra has worked out for several MLB teams including Tampa Bay, Nationals, Orioles, Red Sox, and Giants among other teams who see Ibarra as a future MLB catcher.

Ibarra has been impressing scouts

Adalberto Ibarra who played for Camaguey has been more than impressive during recent tryouts for the Baltimore Orioles and San Francisco Giants.

In one of the workouts, Ibarra put a power display show hitting 16 balls out of the park. Most of the home runs were to the opposite field.

he'll pretty definitely start in the minors

it’s a whole new system here. We may see him in 2010, depending on how our current players perform.

OR

we could trade for an all-hispanic pitching staff..

Just throwing it out there. I.. know… it doesn’t make any sense. I’m just willing to try anything to stop the stolen bases and passed balls!

I know he's going to the minors.

I was wondering if he had to wait until next year, akin to a 16 year-old IFA, like a Tejeda or an Almanzar.

Oscar Tejeda and Will Middlebrooks are really ripping ass ryte nao.

Would be hellarotic to see Tejeda and Rizzo join Casey and El Brujo in Portland - would be FOUR 20 year-olds in AA.

Bates is a not a prospect

Westmoreland recently asked his son how he was feeling, and the response the father received didn't surprise him. "I'm going to be in Portland next year," Ryan said.

Yes he is.
In fact, SoxProspects.com lists him as the 30th ranked prospect in the sox organization.

if he isn't there yet, he's rapidly approaching post-prospect status

He’s 26 and never been a huge standout. I like what I’ve seen of his defense, but he’s getting too old to be a prospect and his offense has exactly looked great at the higher levels. This year, he’s doing fine at Pawtucket, but an .825 OPS is far from lighting the international league on fire for a first baseman.

by wolf9309 on Apr 26, 2010 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

Time is now working against Bates.

He’s a 26 years old with a career .841 OPS and he always have been older than his competition in terms of age advancement scale.
He’s more of a Jeff Bailey, Chris Carter type: Giving depth to the big club in case of injury. If the Sox FO think that Lars is ready to make the jump to AAA, they’ll not hesitate to move Bates (PTBNL in the JVE trade?) to make room for Anderson

could well be, with the Pirates.

But the Sox DO need to ship someone off the 40-man roster. Brown or Bates could make sense from the Sox perspective (though Dusty seems to make more sense for the the Pirates and the Sox)

by wolf9309 on Apr 26, 2010 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah...

Gotta be Bates, Brown or Castro, unless they try to sneak Frandsen (unlikely) or Hulett (possible) through. Or they could retroactively 60 day DL Boof Bonser.

Personally, I still think the deal is “cash” and we try to sneak someone through waivers. I think the Bucs would rather have cash than fringy guys like Bates or Brown.

Can’t imagine the Sox want to give up catching depth right now. Bates is my guess.

by alskor on Apr 26, 2010 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Another issue

I’m not expert on the new rules w/ regards to international signees… quite possible we don’t need to add him to the 40 man right now. Especially since he’s reporting to the Ft. Myers complex.

by alskor on Apr 26, 2010 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

He will report first to the club’s minor-league complex in Fort Myers in order to get in game-ready shape, then the club will decide which minor-league team he will report to. The club is quite high on his offensive potential and his throwing arm but because he has not focused on catching until the last couple of years — he played first, second and third — his defense still needs development.

How long that development will take is what everyone, including the Red Sox, is quite curious to find out.

Regardless I think Bates is on the chopping block soon.

Atchinson goes down for Dice-K, Schoeneweis might go for Embree (or not, who knows?)

Take a look at the 40 man...

He’s getting very close to the most expendable player.

If it makes you feel better… well, very good chance he goes unclaimed and accepts an assignment to the minors…

by alskor on Apr 26, 2010 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions

BUT...

Do they have to sign it now and place him now? Or do they just agree in principle and have some leeway…?

by alskor on Apr 26, 2010 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions

that's a good question

I’d guess though, that they want him working with teams as soon as possible, and he can’t join a minor league roster until he’s signed. So either way, it’s probably gonna happen very soon (he probably also wants his signing bonus sooner rather than later)
