Almanzar
an ISO of .225 with a 14.6% BB rate and a 18.8% K rate? Yay!
Westmoreland recently asked his son how he was feeling, and the response the father received didn't surprise him. "I'm going to be in Portland next year," Ryan said.
When you say Wagner is tomorrow's catcher of the Red Sox,
Do you actually mean tomorrow? Because at this point, I would love that.
Call up Wagner and Lars Anderson
I don’t care how they are performing. I’d prefer Wagner catching sending Victor to DH, and as for Anderson? He can’t be worse than David Ortiz has been. He’s through. Release him and go cheaper.
but, but...
if we called up wagner and lars, then martinez would be DHing and lars would be sitting on the bench.
Really, there’s a progression players need to go through to develop. If they call up people to play before they’re ready, it’s not just that they won’t be as good now, it’s that it can retard the process of their whole career and they might never be able to reach their potential because they didn’t have time to learn on the lower levels.
Wagner
Mark Wagner is 25 years old…its time to see if (a) he can be an asset to the Major League Club or (b) he’s merely their to catch AAA starters.
At this point I’d take mininmal offense in a direct trade for the ability to call a game/throw out runners
From the Soxprospects.com scouting report
“Has the potential to be an excellent defensive catcher at the major league level”
Let’s find out
well he's 25
but only played a half year in AAA. And historically, needs a half year at each level to get accustomed to catching at it before he starts hitting.
Catcher’s tend to come up later, they take the most work in the minors. Which is OK because they also break down the fastest.
I’d rather see Dusty Brown come up for a bit until Wagner is developed, but neither is really reasonable to use as our everyday catcher.
I don't see why Wagner doesn't deserve at least a shot at being reasonable as our everyday catcher.
If nothing else, he guns down runners. It’s not like Victor is particularly good in other aspects of the game, and Varitek’s bat will disappear the second he starts getting everyday wear and tear. Much better to try out Wagner.

it looks to me that
his bat is just beginning to adjust to AAA pitching. Just starting. It seems to me it would stunt his development at this point to throw him in against MLB pitchers every day when he’s just figuring that out.
Why does he "need to develop" at AAA
Would it be reasonable to expect him to hit at the .230-.240 mark while providing excellent defense for the parent club.
Do we really “need” an offensive catcher?
St. Louis has a very valuable asset in Yadier Molina for example
certainly don't need an offense-first catcher
however, I do think that an OPS of .619 is unacceptable at any point in this lineup. That’s the number he put up last year in AAA (with a .268 OBP), and I don’t see why there is any reason to believe those numbers wouldn’t decrease coming to Boston.
Yes Yadier Molina is quite an asset. He is a great defensive catcher, but he has also hit around .300 the last few years, just very little power. That’s a whole different thing. The last few years he’s had an average to above average OBP.
Also, I may be alone, but I haven’t completely given up on Ortiz yet. And I’m just not convinced that Martinez, who provides great production out of the catcher spot, provides enough offense in the DH spot (especially when we have a catcher who will be a black hole).
Hey you didn’t forget Bates this time!
I ♥ Bates
