Mike Cameron to Disabled List; Josh Reddick Called Up
Mike Cameron is heading to the disabled list:
Outfielder Mike Cameron, who battled kidney stones last week, will be placed on the disabled list Tuesday because of an abdominal strain.
Cameron was scratched from the Red Sox lineup Monday morning after complaining of discomfort similar to the pain he felt late last week when he passed a kidney stone. After numerous tests Tuesday, it was determined that he had the strain, which is probably related to the groin pull he experienced late in spring training.
Abdominal pulls can be slow to heal and it's possible that Cameron could miss more longer than 15 days.
Josh Reddick has been called up to replace Cameron.
This is not good news. I was really excited to see Cameron's mastery of center field and now we're not going to have that for awhile. Jacoby Ellsbury, who has also been battling injury, will likely stay off the disabled list with Cameron going on. Expect to see a lot of Josh Reddick in the Red Sox outfield until Ellsbury is fully healthy. Even after that, he'll probably split time with Jeremy Hermida in left.

I hope Reddick will play CF on most days until Ells is ready to do so.
Im just so sick of Bill Hall out there.

I think he'll be there every day
the Red Sox know Hall can’t play center field, Hall knows Hall can’t play center field, the fans are about ready to burn him at the stake if he appears in center field again.
What's the point of having a versatile backup who can do absolutely nothing
except sort-of field some positions. We could have the same thing going with AAA call-ups, can’t we?
well he can field
2nd, 3rd, left, and right well. We weren’t planning on needing a CF, what with Ells and Cameron, and weren’t planning on still having Lowell when we picked him up.
But yes, I’m not a big Hall fan. He can contribute if someone needs a day off every once in a while, but there’s no position I’d like to see him filling in as a DL replacement.
ok... but why do we need a back up for 3rd? lf? rf? and who backs up
short stop?
a non hitting 2nd base back up?
it’s still early, but i’d like to know who made the decision to keep him on the roster.
i’m not becoming a fan of hall either
If the Mike Lowell trade went through,
the idea was Tug Hutlet backing up the middle infield…

this is not good news at all
but thank god that we don’t need to have Hall in there any more. Hopefully Cameron heals pretty quick, but doesn’t sound like the kind of thing that he’ll recover from too quickly.
Isn't this going to be
a 2+ month recovery? I am under the impression that these kind of injuries are a long time in healing.

ACTUALLY, advanced metrics show that that wasn't "premature".

This was the risk with signing these older players
though Bay was the alternative and the hobbled, post surgery Cameron is still probably a better defender than a fully healthy Bay.
Disappointing to be sure, but this shouldn’t hurt us much. This is one area we have plenty of depth. Actually… we have lots of depth all over. Just too bad we didn’t DL both Ells and Cameron immediately. We had to play some of the toughest teams in the league with a short bench and starting our 4th and 5th OFers.

AND
The plan was still solid here. A bad 12 game start doesn’t mean the plan was flawed. You can pinch hit Albert Pujols and he might strike out. Process was still solid and this should be an excellent team with a great shot at the playoffs.

Define great shot at the playoffs.
The bad thing is that while we have slumped the Yankees and Rays are off to very hot start which diminishes our chances quite a bit.
Baseballprospectus has us at 16.9% to make the playoffs right now, Pecota adusted at 37,5% (Rays 74% Yankees 70%). Coolstandings: 14,7%!
I dont call that a great shot.

We really need to see where we stand in two weeks
after TEX, BAL, TOR, and BAL again. If we pull another 4-9, then we’re in trouble. If we can muster a 9-4, then we’re right back in it.
I don'y think those percentages matter much right now
There are 149 games left to play. In the remaining 90+% of the season anything can happen. Right now, the Sox are banged up. Going forward, the Rays or MFY might lose key players. Also, over the course of a very long season teams go through hot and cold streaks.

Furthermore
On April 21, 2009, the MFY had a 20.7% chance of making the playoffs. The Jays (67%), Sox (43.3%), and Rays (21.8%) were all listed as having a betterr chance of getting to the post-season. Cool Standings gave the Blue Jays a 51.2% chance of winning the East.
After 19 games into the 2008 season, Tampa was given only an 11.2% chance of making the playoffs (worst in the East). They only had a 5.5% chance of winning the division.

I wonder...
What those sites had the Yankees chances at last year when they were 5 games out of first in June?

not making me feel anything
it’s very early, 149 games, less than 1/9 (1 inning) of a season complete.
i think the bad thing about our start and why we are feeling overly pessimistic, early, is that we are not seeing any or little improvement compared to last years october team.
the things that would make us competitive or on pace to (95 wins again), aren’t happening. the defense strategy has struggled, dh is non existent, catching woes continue but for different reasons and we have $35 million tied to bad contracts (20% of payroll, lowell, ortiz & julio). sounds like the 2008 yankmees.
Great shot at the playoffs in any other division
In the AL beast, I’m not so sure. With such a tough battle, we need a massive streak of good play to make the 95+ wins we’ll need to take on the Yankees and Rays.

Are you sure the Rays will win 95+ games?

Nope
But I’m not betting against them, this series factored in or not.

Aside from the MFY
Who beat them worse than they beat us, the Rays haven’t played anyone. They’ve had two series against Baltimore already and beat us.

Yes
the Rays are very good and have a deep 5 man rotation. But they have been lucky so far:
a)played the Os in 2 series.
n)Have been undistinguished at the plate despite scoring a lot of runs. This is luck. They have scored more runs than the Yankees despite having a team wOBA of .333 (the Yankees have a 0.386). The Rays are 15% better in run scoring than they should be based on wOBA while the Sox are 15% worse. That has to even out over time despite how shitty the Sox look right now.
