Game 6, Overflow Thread: The Bats Are Out

Sox jumped on Gil Meche in a hurry with a 4-run first. Between some bad defense and difficulty putting guys away, Buchholz has let the Royals back in it through 3. But then Petey hit a home run, Beltre doubled in a couple of guys, and the lead is back to 5.

Go Sox!

What's the deal?

Is he trying too hard, or what? He’s got enough pitches that unless he’s tipping or not locating, they shouldn’t be able to get so many foul balls.

I have no idea.

All I can say is that it is at least a positive sign that he can get ahead of pitchers, so success will come in his future starts. He needs a finishing pitch, kinda like Beckett’s curve.

here

In baseball or softball, a strikeout or strike out (denoted by SO or K1) occurs when a batter receives three strikes during his time at bat. A strikeout is a statistic recorded for both pitchers and batters. Pitchers want to throw as many strikeouts as possible, while batters attempt to minimize striking out themselves. While strikeouts are associated with dominance on the part of the pitcher, it is recognized that the style of swing that generates home runs also leaves the batter somewhat susceptible to striking out. Some of the greatest home run hitters of all time— such as Reggie Jackson and Sammy Sosa— were notorious for striking out.
