Scott Schoeneweis Earns Last Red Sox Bullpen Spot
It looks like Scott Schoeneweis did just enough to earn a job:
For those committed #RedSox fans, Scott Schoeneweis was given the final spot in the bullpen over Joe Nelson, sources confirm
I will go on the record now to say that I expect nothing special from Schoeneweis. If he is still on the roster by August, I will be surprised. Actually, let's put this to a poll!

I'll go on the record right now to say this is the wrong choice.
Schoeneweis is not a major league level pitcher. This is the Sox holding on to an “asset” because he has the April out in his contract. Joe Nelson would contribute far more to this team then Scott Schoeneweis, who gets by on being a lefty alone.
The idea that a mediocre lefty is better than a better righty against lefties is a superstition. Nelson can pitch to lefties. It helps to be same-handed, but it’s not a requirement.

I don't think that's what it came down to
Because even Theo has said recently it doesn’t matter if it’s a lefty, they just need to be able to get lefties out.
There’s probably something we’re not seeing out of Nelson. Schoeneweis probably has the higher ceiling, too. Maybe the Sox think Schoeneweis could be solid with help from John Farrell?

Not exactly a choice that makes you go "Yay!"
Whatever, they really wanted a lefty I guess.
He’ll be here until he either A) pulls a Javier Lopez circa 2009 or B) an actual prospect/major league refugee make a real case to be promoted to the big show.

Hopefully it'll be Richardson in Pawtucket making a case
fingers crossed

Who cares?
No great choices and he’s as good as any. You never know what relievers will give you year to year and they probably think they can develop a usage pattern for him that will suit his skills better than his last team. If he doesn’t work out its not big loss.
The old Celtics team used to say they didnt care about who started the games – they cared who was on the floor to finish them. I’m sure will figure it out during the season and the pen and some of the roster will look nothing like we expect.

JC Romero part 2
except with even less talent
The Red Sox offense isn't an issue,- until its an issue.
This year's Javier Lopez
gone after a majority of LOOGY outings blow up on us. I just hope those experiments don’t cost us games.
He's like... the 7th guy out of the pen.
Papelbon
Bard
Okaji
Ramon Ramirez
MDC
Atchinson
Schoeneweis
Its doubtful he’s used for more than a batter or two in a close game. He shouldn’t have the chance to blow up on us… unless he gives up a salami to Carl Crawford in the 6th inning or something.

I don’t like this much. Was hoping Nelson would make it.

At least he is better than Lopez
If he can get back to the form like when he was with the Mets a couple of years ago, then he will be solid. I’d rather have Nelson in the pen, but I guess the Red Sox really preferred having another lefty.
But I’m glad for Schoeneweis, since his wife died tragically a year or two ago. A very positive note in what has probably been a very melancholy past year for him.
Beginning of the Sarkisian ERA
I approve.
.305 /.380 /.465 career vs the Yanks.
Yea I know there’s probably at least one pitcher on the Yankees with shitty #’s vs the Sox. Shutup.
Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.
Not bad.
Schoenweis is better than Gagne!
Realistically though, he’s just taking up roster space until Dice-K and Boof come back. So it is very unlikely he stays in Boston for more than 2 weeks unless an injury complication arises or he has an absolutely AMAZING April.
hope he can recover from last years tragedy
I pull for this guy, from a human side. Having his wife overdose and having 4 kids is a lot to deal with for anyone
Here's my bullpen predictions for the beginning of the year
April 22nd- Wake to the Pen, MDC to the DL
Mid-May- MDC back in, Schoeneweis released
Late May- Wake to the DL, Nelson up
I’m guessing things will shake up so that Richardson is up in July.
I don’t think Boof has much more of a future in this pen. I think he gets traded to a team that will start him for almost nothing once he is healthy, barring a bad injury to a starter (because with Wake in there, we don’t need 2 long men in the pen)
Bowden
The Sox may work Bowden in mid-season similar to Masterson a couple of years ago. As long as he shows he can handle the job and gets the ball a few times a week, that experience is more valuable than having him start in Pawtucket at this point.
I'm a little bit nervous about the backend of the pen
Hopefully the return of Matsuzaka and at the emergence of one candidate (Atchinson, Schoeneweis, Bowden, Richardson, etc.) will solidfiy the pen by mid season. If not, a deadline deal for a power arm could be in the future.
I have faith in Atchison
For one thing, the last few years, he’s been throwing a lot of innings, albeit in Japan
Scott Schoeneweis Red Soxs roster
Schoeneweis is a good athlete who keeps in shape in both the off season and during the season. He still has the stuff against left handed batters. Theo remembers that Scott and Lackey were together with the Angels in 2002 when they won the whole enchilada. Granted that was eight years ago but he still has the juice. I’m with this guy all the way, he’s smart and has the intestinal fortitude to hang in there after suffering a great tragedy in his young life.
Best case/worst case
Best case he’s Ramon Ramirez, Worst case he is Alan Embree. That’s a risk I’m willing to take.
