Jed Lowrie, Boof Bonser Hit the Disabled List
Shortstop Jed Lowrie and pitcher Boof Bonser will be on the disabled list to start the regular season:
Though neither move was a surprise, the Red Sox placed right-hander Boof Bonser (right groin strain) and shortstop Jed Lowrie (mononucleosis) on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday afternoon. The moves are retroactive to this past Friday, meaning both players would first be eligible to play on April 10.
[...]
With the two roster moves, the Red Sox have 33 players left in Major League camp. Daisuke Matsuzaka will go on the disabled list before Opening Day, so Boston has seven more cuts to make before Sunday's Opening Night game against the Yankees.
Lowrie most likely would have started the season in Pawtucket, so this isn't a big loss. The Sox will let him heal up and then get some at-bats in Pawtucket. Bonser, though, was in line for a bullpen spot. He's had a rough spring, but the Sox seem to like what he brings to the table.

ACTUALLY, advanced metrics show that that wasn't "premature".

I'm pretty sick of the apologist on here making excuses for her.
The Red Sox offense isn't an issue,- until its an issue.
Who's the apologist?

Umm... I think he can still be a good player for us
but most likely in a utility role down the line. He’s way out of the Sox plans right now, obviously.
I do like the guy’s game. I just don’t think he can be counted on at all. Health is a skill and all.
If that makes me an “apologist,” so be it…

I like Lowrie
but he has a lot more value to a club as a starting shortstop than he does to the Sox as a utility player. I think if he’s healthy, he’s wasted in the utility role and if he can’t stay on the field, he’s no use to anyone.
Besides, I’m holding out hope that Scoot will be sliding into that utility role after Iglesias progresses quickly and takes over short at some point in 2011
I think that that sums up Lowrie's true problem.
Even healthy, he has no realistic chance of being the starter this season over Scoot. And he is going to get squeezed by Iglesias before next year is done.
As you say, he’s wasted as a utility player. Too bad. Like alskor, I like the way Jed played for us when he was healthy.
Here I am, sorry I'm late.
Seriously, there’s no reason to conclude Jed Lowrie is injury prone. He’s had ONE injury that was not allowed to heal properly, performed admirably in all areas not relating to the injury, and should be ready to go shortly. Getting Mono is just a ridiculous random happening.

Alright, that's a very good point
Still, it will be a long time before I’m willing to rely on the health of his wrist.

Jed Lowrie HITS the disabled list?
I hope he didn’t injure anything when they collided…
