Game 29: Red Sox @ Orioles
Jon Lester's final tuneup of the spring comes against AL East foe Baltimore.
Here's the lineup backing him up in Sarasota today:
- Scutaro SS
- Pedroia 2B
- Martinez C
- Youkilis 1B
- Ortiz DH
- Drew RF
- Lowell 3B
- Reddick LF
- Lin CF
Expected in relief: Alan Embree, Scott Schoeneweis and Joe Nelson.
Looks like a pretty good lineup traveled to Sarasota today. The only regulars out are Adrian Beltre, Jacoby Ellsbury and Mike Cameron. ... This would be a nice game to watch on TV just because I'd like to see Lin play centerfield. Unfortunately, no coverage today. ... Lowell will play third base to hopefully increase his trade value. That, though, is a longshot.

ah but there is coverage today
on MLB.TV, because it’s on MASN. I’ll be watching as muc as possible, and i’ll put in updates of anything particularly interesting.
Pedroia strikes out swinging, but reaches on a dropped 3rd strike.
Sox can’t make contact early.
USG
About twice his usual rate
But Pedroia always starts slow, and he’s actually doing pretty OK this spring.

Berken is showing a really good curve so far. Dropping just below the zone or at the knees. Nasty bite.
USG
Youkilis goes the other way, but Roberts dives and robs him of the hit.
Berken Ks 2 and gets 2 groundouts to first for a 4-out inning. Martinez put up a nice fight though.
USG
Lester's first pitch gets shot into right field for 2.
I think Drew got him, but the umpire calls him safe.
USG
Markakis flairs one to Scutaro, who has to wait on it a little.
Roberts manages to barely get back to second. If it were a little more sharply hit it would’ve been two.
USG
Rangers don't want Millar because
“They want someone who can sub at 3rd”

Reddick flies out to left
The throw beats Drew to the plate, but Wieters can’t hold on as it rolls to the backstop.
2-0
USG
Not just can't hold on.
Misses the glove entirely as it bounces over his shoulder.

Wait...
Wieters did something that wasn’t good? Surely, you must mean Chuck Wieters…

yeah that was a great play
i like their middle infield a lot. I’m curious to see how Tejada’s doing over at third, but in all the O’s games I’ve watched barely anything seems to go his way.
Lester gets some another weak flair to Scutaro.
Reimold put on a good AB, but goes down.
Lester, the announcers points out, has the best winning percentage of any pitcher w/ 50 decisions since 1900.
USG
I always wonder, if on a 2 strike count you take a ball which gets away from the catcher...
Can you take a hack after the ball is in the glove and run down to first?
USG
I don't think so Tim
Once the ball is at or past the catcher, too late.
plus, I would think you’d want your guy stay in the AB – unless he’s Tek.
But if he’s Tek, he’s not beating a throw to 1B
I have a great view of fenway from my office
and i’m pretty sure i just saw martinez’ homer land there.
JD Drew emotionlessly and uncaringly rips one to right to score Youkilis.
God I hate him and his lack of hustle and heart.

Why oh why
Couldn’t we have Jonny Gomes? Gomes would never play defense or take walks or fail to hit someone with a steel chair…

Berken, who showed a really nasty curve and was untouchable in the first
Goes down in 2.1 innings giving up 5 runs.
USG
Sadly the 'extended' 'late' lunch hr must conclude
and with the game as it is, getting back to the grind won’t be so bad
First trouble for Lester.
Grounder deflects off Lester’s glove, keeping Scutaro from making a play on it. 1st and 2nd for the Orioles with 0 outs.
USG
Lester tries to knock another one down...
Doing himself more harm than good. Scutaro still manages to throw out the runner at first.
USG
Lester gets a big high chopper.
The Sox let the run score and get the out at 1st. This is just one of those innings where nobody really does anything worthy of a run, but they get in anyways.
USG
Lester blows an "89" MPH fastball by Markakis for another strike out.
One of the weakest runs I’ve ever seen scores, but Lester limits the damage.
USG
Lin making contact is a really good sign for him.
Strikeouts have been his problem for a while.
Pulls up at first with a leadoff single.
USG
I really like Scoot.
He’s had a quiet spring, but I’ve seen what I want to from him at short, and I think he’ll do just fine at the plate.

First time the TV has shown guys working out in the outfield during a game.
Probably one of the pitchers doing sprints. It’s…amusing.
USG
Lester gets a quick groundout.
Scutaro really seems to be enjoying himself. Playoff team allure, or $5 million?
USG
k's looking
someone told him he had to swing less, but they didn’t tell him which pitches not to swing at.
Any day VMart gets 6 RBIs is a good day in my book.
But It would have been even sweeter if he could have waited until next week. Just sayin’.

I like watching gonzalez pitch
though as the O’s closer, I hope i don’t have to see him pitch too often.
Lester not getting the same corners the Os were getting.
Gives up a walk to the leadoff man. He’s hitting 94 now.
USG
nice catch by Scoot
I think he has springs in the bottom of his shoes or something… nice jumping skills
I like this
because we know next to beltre and pedroia, he won’t have to cover much ground, so it’s nice for him to be able to cover the air well. Vertical defense, not horizontal!
Anything above "solid" is just extra for me.
All I need is a guy who doesn’t suck.

Tejada flies out to right to end the inning.
1 weak run against Lester through 6 innings. A pretty strong finish to the spring all things considered.
USG
ST is pretty awesome.
I don’t have anything but gut instincts to rely on, but for some reason I am still not convinced that Lester has reached his full potential.
But it’s stuff like this that makes me think there’s another level or two of awesomeness that we still haven’t seen yet.

"I'd like to see Lin play centerfield"
There’s a guy who’s definitely coming to the bigs soon, if not for the Sox then someone else. He looks like the Second Coming of Paul Blair – he may never wield a big stick, but it won’t much matter. Lin covers more ground than Astroturf.
the funniest thing about this game
was that Embree’s lovely performance actually IMPROVED his ERA. THAT’s how bad it is.
