Community Projections 2010: David Ortiz

Now thiiiiis should be interesting.

How do you think Big Papi will hit this season? Will he slump like he did at the beginning of 2009, or will he hit like the second two-thirds of the season? If Ortiz finally going to fall off the map ... completely?

His wrist injury wasn’t due really to be healed til last June, which was coincidentally when his bat reawakened. The one you saw in June was the real David Ortiz, ladies and gentlemen.

what do you think his best years were?

I suspect that's an OPS

Though that would make the SLG only .461, which is pretty low if he hits 27 HR and hits .282.

If he has a .700 OPS

There is no chance in hell he gets 425 PA.

Building Fenway from the ground up - Virtual Fenway

by Sean O on Mar 31, 2010 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

yes but

what he’s saying is that after what happened last year, in the last year of his contract, if he’s performing that badly for that long again, they’re just gonna cut him. Would’ve made no sense last year when we still would have had to pay him this year.

by wolf9309 on Mar 31, 2010 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I would like to think they would cut him

But, I doubt it would happen unless they deal for someone at the trading deadine. And he would have around 400 PA by then.

by bdunc8 on Mar 31, 2010 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Well they may not straight up cut him

because he’s Papi, but Theo’s made it pretty clear that he needs to step it up. I’m sure rather than an outright release, he’d probably get an extended DL stay.

by wolf9309 on Mar 31, 2010 11:26 PM EDT up reply actions

We're talking a .700 OPS

we would absolutely deal for someone, if not a star, at the deadline. If nothing else, if he’s hitting that poorly overall, we’re getting a righty bat and platoon DH.

Actually, we probably won’t even need that, since Mike Lowell’s corpse isn’t going anywhere, and he’s already an immobile lefty-smasher.

My point is that the prediction isn't as far-fetched as you think

If Ortiz has the exact same numbers as last year, and we cut/trade him at the deadline, those numbers would be pretty damn close to a .700 OPS and 425 PA.

my guess is victor martinez will be the DH next year and we’ll pick up a catcher in FA or trade

hopefully not free agency

because the list of catchers who will be available via FA is pretty unpleasant.

by wolf9309 on Apr 1, 2010 12:18 AM EDT up reply actions

you may be right about Ortiz being done

but that statement about victor and the catcher position is about as likely as Julio Lugo being resigned to be the DH.

by mmmmm on Apr 1, 2010 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

why?

the sox traded lowell for max ramirez and may try to get him in a lowell trade again.

Going high.

I think with the lofty standards both the Sox brass and himself have, plus no WBC, plus no wrist injury, will all equal a near-2006 performance.
