Six Year Deal for Jeets in NY??

So I was over on SB Nation's The Daily Dish, and there's an article about rumblings of a six year contract extention for Derek Jeter.

The article author provides the following quote:

It would be tough for the Yankees to argue against giving Jeter a six-year extension.

And so I says to myself: Boy. Do I know some folks who could get some fuel offa that line.

In Heyman's SI article on which the post is based, it mentions A-Rod and how 6 more years of Jeets brings him to age 42, which is the same as A-Rod will be at the end of his contract and other congruencies, and it also describes them as "frenemies", so make sure you read that, too.

So? Thoughts?

I wish they do and resign Posada and Mo too

Nothing will make me happy more than a MFY team filled with aging player signed to huge contracts: Texiera, Sabathia, A-Rod, Jeter
It will limit them substantially in the FA market and because they’ve not very successful developing talent…well, you got the picture

Absolutely no homegrown talent on the WS team.

None.

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

In recent history

A bunch of relievers and 4th OFers. Other than Cano, I don’t see any success.

to be fair

several of their relievers would be starting on most other MLB teams, they just get enough good FAs that the homegrown guys don’t have a spot.
I think the same for both Gardner and Melky.

Who?

Both Hughes and Joba have tried that, and it’s had at best mixed results.

so has Buchholz

but we view him as a starter. Most young players take time in the big leagues to develop into the players they can.

Because Buchholz has had success as a starter too.

When he didn’t do well, many people were very skeptical. I think it’s only fair to apply that to them too.

I like Buchholz, but ...

You should remember that Phil Hughes is almost two years younger. Joba is a year younger than Buchholz. But I think the other two pitchers are better, as they’re likely to be starters.

Even if fat Joba becomes the greatest closer in the world, his value isn’t as great as some fans or sportswriters would have you believe. For example. over the past three years, Mariano Rivera has only been worth 3 more wins than Tim Wakefield. Fangraphs sees the two as having almost the same value: 7.3 WAR for Rivera and 6.6 WAR for Wake (half a win over three years is nothing). The comparison is a good one since Rivera is an elite closer and Wake has been an oft-injured #4/#5 starter the past three seasons.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

True, he's younger and may still be very good.

But again, before we start claiming the Yankees have developed starting rotation talent, I’d like to see it actually happen. There’s no question about a guy like Lester now. It’s getting very hard to doubt Buchholz, too. But until Phil Hughes reasserts himself as anything but a reliever, I’m not about to give them credit for him.

I'll agree with that

I like Hughes. He has nasty stuff. I also remember the “dump Buchholz” chatter from Sox fans. Those of us who argued that the Sox should keep Buchholz centered our arguments on his stuff and his ceiling. I see Hughes becoming a good starting pitcher.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Let's not forget Detroit and Atlanta valued some Yankee youngsters as well.

Arodys Vizcaino is a good prospect

But certainly not someone who has been developed.

And Melky is a joke even amongst your fans as far as I can tell.

Otherwise, you’ve got Austin Jackson who was severely overhyped going into last year and nearly fell off the map, and some more relievers.

Can they do 10?

That seems to be their basic contract length to All Star positional players, why insult their leader and Yankee all time great with anything less?

I for one would love to see the Yanks with a 45 year old SS come 2019.

Though I’m sure he’d still be hitting .320. Prick.

Manny ain't the only bad man.

Jon Heyman makes Ron Borges look like Walter Cronkite.

And that’s all I have to say about that.

Jeter deserves it

Look I hate the Yankees as much as the next guy, but there is no one on the Yankees that is more of a Yankee than Jeter. What I mean is, he is exactly the perfect player for that town, they love him and will until he retires even if he starts to falter in a few years. I think the fans would be bitter if the Yankees don’t let Jeter stay at SS until he says he is done, or he says he wants to move to 2B or OF to let the Yanks bring up an up and coming rookie. I think Jeter cares so much about the Yankees and winning that when/if the time comes that someone is deserving a chance to play at SS he will move.

I hope he gets 6, the guy plays hard, plays clutch and plays with heart at a top level..it is good for baseball that he is in NY.

An up-and-coming rookie from the Yanks?

If Jesus Montero can’t stick at catcher, much less short!

Well deserved!

OK, not popular, but Jeter deserves this from the evil empire! Say what you want, but Jeter is a class act and is everything you would want in a player! The guy works hard, always finds a way to contribute, and is just that good!

Of course I agree that I a want the Yankees to load up on long term contracts with players who are in their 2nd half of their career, but in this case I know Jeter will always be a pain to us no matter his age!

Plain and simple…….Jeter earned and deserves this. He is good for baseball!
