Oh My God, They're Going to Play Baseball Today
Can you believe it? The Red Sox will play baseball today! Twice! OK, so they're Spring Training games against colleges that count for nothing and result in performances that are often indicative of nothing. But there's going to be BASEBALL! On TV! With the Red Sox!
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the Sox have a shot at sweeping this double header, but you never know. We are starting Bill Hall and Darnell McDonald in the first game, and some guy named Tug will be DHing while some guy named Boof pitches the second game. What? I know!
Consider this your first open game day thread of the year. Go Red Sox!

I'm all giddy
I’m considering this the start of baseball season- time to grab a whole lot of beer and not leave my couch till november (except to go to fenway…)
Time to put the two-four on ice.
Galactus does as he pleases. Because Galactus is drunk.
I have a five-tool player in my pants.
Spring has arrived!
Wait… it’s still snowing? Damn it.

With Ellsbury, Hall, Martinez, and Ortiz going to the plate
You’d think that Bill Hall wouldn’t be the one to get a hit. Go figure.
Dan Zehr can now go home and say he pitched a “major league” inning.
USG
this is pretty sweet
I’m checking the updates for the Sox game, while watching the pirates vs. the yankees, all at work.
Good times.
here we go
lowrie and anderson walked, mcdonald grounded to a force out, lin reached on an IF single, velazquez doubled in 2 runs, ells walked, and Hall GIDP to end it
2-0
2nd hit of the game by the one and only Che-Hsuan Lin!!!
Ok, it’s an infield single but I’ll take the Ichiro! floor >_>

I'm gonna choose to read into the Ortiz homer.
And NOT into Anderson’s 0-2 so far.
Is that fair?
USG
Hey, at least he walked
And I’m pretty sure the only hit given up by a Sox pitcher so far is off of Delcarmen. Go farm!

By the way it looks like Lin get robbed of another hit
But with two runners on and two outs, Frank Compagone made a terrific diving catch to take a hit away from Lin and end the inning.

wow. Ino Guerrero batted in the 5th. He’s a batting practice pitcher. That’s the kind of game this is.
I believe I heard "Great jump" about Kalish in center a few times already.

Boston College fielding is making us look good
Can we play them 18 games a year.
They must have really bad “SUV” numbers.

Lavarnway behind the plate, Iglesias at Short, Navarro at...3rd? 1st? I forgot already.
Still, awesome.

Rem Dawg must have messed up the call.
’Cause that was Tek.
I was just about to say that Lavarnway was looking good framing pitches, too.

Does Josh Reddick look a bit like Daniel Bard
Or is it just me?
Also, how about this 18 year old Japanese girl with the sidearm knuckleball? Wake likes her stuff.
Wink wink nudge nudge know what I mean?
USG
Really good looking swing.
Like Reddick, it’s all gonna be about discipline. But the fact that he can hit bad pitches will probably be enough with his glove.

Jose Iglesias had a 3-RBI double on the first pitch he saw.
Pretty good looking swing. I haven’t seen enough of it, but someone on SoxProspects suggested it was very similar to A-Rods. From what I have seen, I understand the comparison.
As was mentioned earlier, Kalish has had some “Good range” comments.
Kyle Weiland’s control isn’t back yet. Kris Johnson’s not sucking isn’t, either.
Bowden did just fine. Tazawa’s still got nice control.
USG
And from earlier today, Casey Kelly struck out 2 guys and finished his inning on 10 pitches. The man has command.

Yeah 2 swing and misses on changeups

Nice!!!! Time for me to bash THE MFY prospect
On fangraphs yesterday concerning the topic of WAR for prospects some MFY hated the bashing of montero and here what he wrote:
Here’s a question. Has there been a player in the last 40 years who hit as well as Montero did last year, taking into account age, level and park/league, who did not succeed in the majors? The last players that I can think of who were ahead of him were Alex Rodriguez and Ken Griffey Jr.
Montero is, in my view, a very, very good bet to be a 3 WAR player, and has a decent chance to be a 5 WAR player like David Ortiz. This is true whether he is able to continue as a catcher.
The last FORTY years? I’ll give an example from the last FIVE years,, Let’s call him player X:
Age 18 in A ball (Both in South Atlantic League)
Montero: 569 PAs .322/.373/.488 with 37/83 BB/K
Player X: 578 PAs .322/.388/.538 with 53/120 BB/K
Age 19 :
Montero. 198 PAs .356/.406/.583 with 14/26 BB/K in A+ (FLO)
181 PAs .317/.370/.539 with 14/21 BB/K in AA (EL)
Player X: 370 PAs .336/.386/.582 with 25/66 BB/k in AA (SOUL)
234 PAs .285/.303/.447 with 4/33 BB/K in AAA (IL)
Although, putting similar numbers in terms of OPS and rates in terms of BB% and K%, player X was actually MORE advanced in terms of age than J. Montero and obviously highly ranked in BA lists, also he could field his position.
His name? Delmon Young. Now, is DY a very, very good bet for a 3 WAR player? I don’t think so.
