Michael Bowden Among Four Shipped to Minors

The Red Sox have sent pitchers Michael Bowden, Ramon A. Ramirez and first baseman Aaron Bates to the minors. Jorge Sosa has been re-assigned to minor league camp.

According to the Globe's Amalie Benjamin, the Red Sox now have 40 players left in camp.

The most interesting race left for the Red Sox roster is for the last bench spot (if Mike Lowell is healthy) and for the spots in the bullpen (Scott Atchison, Brian Shouse, Joe Nelson), depending on how the rotation pans out.

last bench spot between lowrie and hullet?

I havent really followed ST that closely i thought bench would be : Hall, Varitek, Hermida and Lowell? What changed?

I agree

I sort of thought they would just send Lowrie down so he could get some more reps in so he can come in and be ready if needed later in the year.

I'm thinking

Lowell might not be on the Opening Day roster due to injury concerns…

I think either way

Lowrie isn’t close to the opening day roster. He’s only played a few games and hasn’t been able to work out effectively with the mono- I’d guess he’d be a couple weeks away even if the plan was to have him on the MLB roster.

I don’t think that was ever even the plan, I think he’s starting at AAA again.

Bench spot goes to Lowell or, if Lowell can’t play or is traded, Hulett.

I’m sure the Sox don’t want to DL Lowell unless really necessary as that doesn’t look good for teams that may be interested in him.

i'd send lowrie down

lowrie will never be better than a good backup infielder with the sox (he can play 3 spots of the infield north of the plate) .

barring any starter injuries, lowrie may be traded.

bowden’s delivery reminds me of k faulks and struggled as a starter but found himself with the A’s as a closer. he maybe in the minors for a long time

2nd question to our prospect experts

What role do you think Bowden can play for the Sox? Is he trade bait at the deadline to bring in a bat if Papi struggles? I mean wake/dice-k are 6th starters and tazawa prolly number 7 if needed right? If so, I dont really see a future for him in this organization.

I sort of see him like Masterson now, maybe long relief/spot starts maybe in the future. He needs to prove though that his time in the big show last year was a fluke and that he will never ever do anything like that again.

To his credit

he only really had 2 bad outings- and one of them was him being called in last minute and not actually expecting to pitch that day, against the Yankees. Obviously you can’t just throw those outings away, but his other 11 innings looked pretty great: 11 IP, 6H, 2BB, 9K, 3 ER.

My guess is

if he kills in AAA this year, maybe bring him up to the majors for a spot start in the majors as a showcase and use him as trade bait- if he doesn’t seem better than last year (and last year he looked pretty good in AAA) I’d guess he’s got a career as a long man/spot starter- not sure he necessarily has a role as that with the sox either, as I’m guessing that’s where tazawa ends up as well.

Seems about right.

I can’t see either Bowden or Tazawa as anything more than spot starters and Casey Kelly bust insurance, as it were. I would be surprised if either established themselves in the next few years as long-term starters in anything but a replacement role on the Red Sox, which is why they’ll likely not be Red Sox for too horribly long.

Which makes Tazawa’s case particularly interesting, since he signed with the Red Sox particularly to sign with the Red Sox as it were.

His stuff took a step back in 2009...

He’s a decent pitcher, but a lot closer to just another guy. I would wager a number of organizations, especially smaller market NL teams, would have put him in the rotation by now. He’s not a big part of our plans.

They’ve given him some stuff to work on and he’ll do that at Pawtucket. He’s useful depth and a major league quality pitcher… but he doesn’t have a role on this team other than insurance. If he pitches poorly at Pawtucket he will be forgotten for another year. If he pitches well he could get a spot start or two down the stretch and/or a job in the pen. I don’t want to sound like I’m knocking Bowden – I’m not. Every GM in the game would love to have a guy like this around with options. We essentially have two guys like this (MLB ready pitching prospect, not overwhelming stuff, useful MLB pitcher w/ a little upside who can start or relieve and has options left) in Bowden and Tazawa… and that’s awesome to have.

He’s really in direct competition with Tazawa for playing time this season. I sort of expect we’ll see them both.

If he pitches well he could be a nice trade chip at the deadline, too.

Also, for those interested in a possible Lowrie trade

Keep an eye on Kevin Frandsen, who the Giants are apparently shopping around. I expect Lowrie is a better commodity than Frandsen, since he has age and a somewhat longer service record of high-minors production. But it should give you an idea of what the market would be for a guy who once produced but has had an injury problem when trying to break into the majors.

funny because

I was thinking the Sox might look at him if they don’t think Hall can adequately cover short

RED SOX OFFENSE

Well;it seems a very high percentage of the offense is coming from non roster or non regular players;how much is Papi,et.al. hitting during spring training;I hope it drastically changes or we can forget the playoffs, unless the pitching staff has a 2.oo collective ERA;ricardo bird.p.d.it seems all contenders have one or two sluggers and we have zilch.

by RICARDO B on Mar 23, 2010 6:18 PM EDT reply actions

You've gotta be kidding me.

It’s SPRING TRAINING.

Adrian Gonzalez has an OPS of .489. Carlos Pena is at .371, Nate McLouth isn’t even touching .200!

Spring training stats just don’t matter much, if at all.

Interesting

I did not see Ram Ram being sent down. I know he didn’t have a good spring but still.

Dice-K

Looks like Dice-K will start in the DL leaving the rotation as Beckett-Lester-Lackey-Buchholz-Wake with Ramirez-Bard-Delcarmen-Okajima-Paps in the pen that leaves one or two spots. Hermida-Tek-Lowell-Hall are bench locks so if they go with 12 pitchers early on there could be two guys who go north, if they chose to go 14/11 then one pen guy and another bench guy (Hulett)

I’d guess they lean pitching early in the year to get guys stretched out and keep Bonser (long) and Atchison

by BobZupcic on Mar 23, 2010 7:26 PM EDT reply actions

they never do 11 pitchers

not for a while anyways.

I’m guessing Bonser is starting on the DL and Nelson and Atchison are in to start.
