Papi destroys one over the right field wall!

2-0 Red Sox

The old bat flip made an appearance, apparently.

PAPI!

I don’t want to get excited but I’m starting to feel a little more confident when I say that he isn’t going to start the season as a hole in the lineup like the last two years.

Varitek grounds out to short, but the damage is done.

Who’s getting excited about Papi? I know I shouldn’t, but…

USG

Why not get excited?

Sure, he has slumps, but he always seems to come through and do something clutch.

Jones grounds out to Martinez at 1st

And Beckett avoids getting hurt by the pop up double.

USG

Doumit smacks a two-strike pitch into the right corner for a double.

He underestimated Reddick’s arm, though. He almost got him at the bag.

congrats to him

Foul ball.

But LaRoche follows it up with a line drive single. 2-1 Sox

No preseason instant replay? :)

Nope

Apparently it was definitely foul though. Even the baserunners started back when they saw it.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

The doubles machine does what he does.

But Cameron is out at the plate for the second time.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 1:48 PM EDT reply actions

Maholm gets Papi to pop WAY up, and gets out of the inning.

3-1 Sox on the back of 4 hits and an error (how Cameron got on in the first).

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 1:54 PM EDT reply actions

Garret Jones with a 3-2 double over Cameron's head.

3-2 Sox as Iwamura scores.

Again, Beckett can’t seem to finish guys today.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 2:05 PM EDT reply actions

Martinez makes a great play on a sharp ground ball to first.

Snags it on the hop, and slides into first to beat Doumit.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 2:07 PM EDT reply actions

Beckett with another full count.

Gets Clemente to fly out to the warning track in left.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 2:18 PM EDT reply actions

4 pitch walk to Andy LaRoche

Tito has to be getting ready to give him the hook.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 2:20 PM EDT reply actions

Delwyn young is on fire, and Beckett pays for it.

2-run shot off of Beckett, who’s now given up 4 runs in 3.1 innings.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 2:22 PM EDT reply actions

That's the day for Beckett.

But it’s certainly not been his day. 4 runs on 6 hits, 2 walks, and a homer.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 2:22 PM EDT reply actions

Oh well

Bad day for josh get them out of the way now and not later!

Scott Atchison getting another shot.

I know a fair number of folk here are pulling for him.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 2:24 PM EDT reply actions

McCutchen with another groundout.

Hall almost tosses it away, but Martinez reels it in.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 2:25 PM EDT reply actions

Atchison gets the last 2 outs of the 4th in quick order as Cedeno flies out to Hermida.

4-3 Pirates as they take the lead on Delwyn Young’s 5th home run of spring training.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 2:26 PM EDT reply actions

Reddick smacks the first pitch he sees into right field for a base hit.

The kid can hit. The question of whether he can walk or not remains. Maybe we’ve got the next Vlad on our hands?

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 2:29 PM EDT reply actions

Big infield fly.

Martinez takes control and grabs it for the 2nd out.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 2:44 PM EDT reply actions

LaRoche lines out to Center field, and Atchison is out of the inning.

Atchison gives up his first earned run off the deep ball, but he’s still got a good shot at a spot with the team out of ST.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 2:47 PM EDT reply actions

David Ortiz grounds it into the shift.

The second fielder (in right field) has to slide to grab it, and can’t come up with it, allowing Ortiz to reach. Sounds like it should be a hit.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 2:53 PM EDT reply actions

Varitek GIDPs, and the inning is over.

Papi picks up his second hit of the game and continues his hot streak, but the Sox are still down 6-3.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 2:55 PM EDT reply actions

Jeremy Hermida goes long!

Brings it to a 2-run game

by RED SOX are #1 in my heart on Mar 19, 2010 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

And the Sox are heating up.

Hall takes the next pitch to left for 2 bases.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 3:06 PM EDT reply actions

Hullet grounds out to short.

Reddick up with an RBI opportunity.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 3:06 PM EDT reply actions

Reddick gets selective and takes a 2-0 pitch to right.

The fielder can’t come up with it on the dive, and Reddick winds up on 2nd. The pinch runner (they still haven’t told me who. I’m guessing Velazquez) has to hold up and wait for it to come down, though, and only ends up at 3rd.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 3:09 PM EDT reply actions

While they're pulling the pitcher, I gotta say, Brett Harper (who took over for Papi) is an interesting case.

Pretty damn good minor league numbers throughout his career. But he’s never even gotten a shot in the majors. If someone does, they might find a legitimate MLB player. At least a pinch hitter against righties (who he kills).

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 3:17 PM EDT reply actions

Aaron Bates grounds towards the hole.

The third baseman dives, but can only tap the ball towards 2nd, and everyone is safe as the game is tied.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 3:18 PM EDT reply actions

Brett Harper rips one towards 1st

But the first baseman makes a great play and starts a 3-6-1 double play.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 3:19 PM EDT reply actions

And the Pirates jump right back on top with a 2-run homer.

Jorge Sosa, you will not be starting the league in the majors.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 3:23 PM EDT reply actions

Place could still come around anytime.

He’s got that Lin quality of being young for his league and constantly moved up despite mediocre numbers. If that power he’s supposed to have emerges, he could end up like Reddick.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

cool

I don’t know much about him, really. Pretty much just seen his name a few times.

by wolf9309 on Mar 19, 2010 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Place lines one into center

It gets by the center fielder, and place ends up at 2nd while Brown scores from first. 1-run game again.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 3:39 PM EDT reply actions

Navarro smacks one into the shortstop.

Scored a hit for Navarro. Just one of those hops on a sharply hit ball.

Lots of good contact for Navarro since those first couple games. He’s been sitting around as a guy who could show up in the top-10 for a while now. This added muscle could get him there.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 3:42 PM EDT reply actions

Khoury flies out to center.

Navarro is tagged out trying to go first-second on the fly on a smart play by Pittsburgh’s defense and bad baserunning by Navarro.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 3:44 PM EDT reply actions

Reddick flies out to left.

Would have been a sac fly to tie the game were it not for Navarro. Good thing it’s ST.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 19, 2010 3:44 PM EDT reply actions

OK, that inning kinda went by me, sorry.

Badgers are playing their opening round game in the NCAA tournament.

Taz gives up the run on the homer. 1 last inning to get 2 runs.
