Game Thread: Mets @ Red Sox
More TV time for the Red Sox today.
- Scutaro
- Pedroia
- Martinez
- Youkilis
- Ortiz
- Beltre
- Hermida
- Cameron
- Reddick
John Lackey gets the start against Pelfrey. The game should be on NESN for those in the area. For those not, I'll do my best on play-by-play, but for the first hour or so it'll be a multi-tasking effort.
Happy St. Patrick's Day, Go Sox!

not showing up on mlb.tv
grrrr. I decided to watch the yankees and phillies game while i waited instead, then that stopped showing up. So now I’m watching the Braves vs. marlins. Oh well, baseball is baseball.
MLB.tv finally let me watch the game.
Horribly buggy serivce.
Seems Lackey is unharmed through 1, and Scutaro got out. All I know.
USG
bottom of the second
youk strikes out looking, Ortiz flies out to deep center, and Beltre flies out to center
third inning
Lackey takes the Mets down 1-2-3.
Hermida singles to left, Cameron pops out in foul ground, Reddick singles to right, Scutaro strikes out, pedroia singles off the shortstop’s glove- now it gets fun:
Hermida scores, Reddick gets trapped between second and third, and makes it back to second, but gets stepped on. He’s staying in the game, though, and the inning continues.
Cora grounds a ball off Lackey
Beltre runs up and does his signature move with a disturbingly nice throw to get him out.
Hi guys
Wow this season will be so awesome, alone seeing Beltre play will be so sweeeeeeet. :D

Ortiz singles
and would have stolen second had hermida not fouled the ball off. Nothing else interesting though. Inning over.
Cameron grounds out to the third baseman.
And Reddick lines one first. Can’t really do much about that one.
USG
A little worrying, though.
That was probably a ball inside. Coulda taken it.

He knows he needs to work on his plate discipline
but it probably won’t be an instant thing- especially against MLB pitchers. He’ll probably take a few months of AAA to really make a proper adjustment.
The thing is that he had those adjustments down for the most part in AA.
Now, if it’s deceptiveness that’s getting him to swing at bad pitches, then OK. That’s the sort of thing you adjust to in AAA/MLB games. But if it’s just bad swings at straight pitches off the plate, then that’s a bad sign.
Of course, maybe he’ll end of being the next Vlad.

Hermida's gotta get his hustle on.
Pagan doubled down the left field line and Hermida just kind of meandered over to the ball.
Beltre and Martinez get in eachother's way trying to get to a ball pretty much perfectly between 3rd and home.
No damage done to either, and it’s a foul, but dangerous.
USG
Wild pitch moves the runner to third, but Cora flies out weakly to left and the inning is over.
Still 1-0 Sox.
USG
That's what Cora is good at: ending innings
Keep the updates coming.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Wild Pitch was the ruling.
It hit the dirt.

guess i was wrong
looked like a passed ball to me though… I thought he hit it into the dirt, but i might’ve been wrong
Agreed

as long as he's healthy
it’ll be fun to see if he can replicate 2009. he was one of the guys i was hoping the sox would pick up for their ST bullpen jumble
That AB is what makes Pedroia so good.
Down 0-2, works the count back full, and then puts the ball in play. It’s an error by the 2nd baseman, but you never strike out and you’ll get on some.
USG
Just checked Pedroia's numbers last year.
74 BB to 45 strikeouts. That’s nuts.

Aaron Bates in the game for Petey.
Which basically means Youk is out come the end of the inning. Third time through the lineup, so the starters wil get their last ABs and then head to the showers without fail.
USG
Mets turn the double play off Victor's third groundout of the inning.
Is it just me, or is Victor’s stance sort of bad? He makes it work, so no problem, but it seems too compact.
USG
Er, third groundout of the game.
It would be really impressive if it was of the inning…

We'd have to be playing the Cleveland Indians for that

And takes out Daniel Murphy's bat with a 96 MPH fastball.
Looked like it was sinking.

Good play by Tug to grab the 2nd grounder of the inning.
Bard with something offspeed. Couldn’t tell, but was that a changeup? He’d been working on getting a changeup going this spring.
USG
Sitting at 87, and it's definitely not his slider.
I think it’s the changeup.
USG
by Ben Buchanan on Mar 17, 2010 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions
Joe even called it "nasty" a couple times.
The folks on the Soxprospects board think Bard should get a look as a starter again if he can work a sick changeup. I’m a bit worried about the mental aspect of it if he fails, but man…Imagine a guy with 3 great pitches hitting high 90s into the 7th or 8th?
USG
by Ben Buchanan on Mar 17, 2010 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions
Then again, if Bard does convert and does badly
He’ll know he can come back to relieving. He was awful in ’07 as a starter, and then destroyed the minors in ’08 and ’09 as a reliever. If he feels secure that his fallback plan is secure, it may not be a problem.

Chris Carter gonna get to face his old team again.
Frank Catalanotto and his rhythmic name work a tough AB into a walk. The first of the day against the Sox.
USG
And the 2nd straight walk.
That fastball is too low too often.

So true
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.
by Drugs Delaney on Mar 17, 2010 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions
Indeed. I'm looking forward to Lackey more now than I was before.
Hopefully, the Sox will have a good 1-2-3 punch out of the pen in Oki-Bard-Paps, and won’t need Ramon Ramirez and Delcarmen to bee very good, because they haven’t had it since halfway through last year.
Still can’t believe we didn’t capitalize on that “MDC the closer” hype and trade him off.
USG
by Ben Buchanan on Mar 17, 2010 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions
Of course, Oki wasn't all that last year either.
I’m really only feeling good about the last 2 innings. We need someone to either really prove themselves, or make a trade.
Maybe we can get another Wagner deal? God, that was just the most incredible bargain for the Sox.
USG

Shouse hits GMJ, and the bases are loaded.
Scott Atchison, your chances are looking better and better.
USG
Sac fly gets all the way to the track. Almost got out.
Shouse did not locate that where he wanted to at all.
USG
Another fly ball gets the Sox out of the inning, but oh what an ugly inning it was.
4-1 Mets heading to the bottom of the 8th.
USG
Hall lines one right past the dive of the 3rd baseman.
Shealy manages to beat the throw home, though it was probably a bad idea to run. Hall scampers into 2nd on the throw and is replaced by Kade Keowen, who is Michael Almanzar in 3 or 4 years if he never advances.
USG
Not sure if that was Hullet or Wagner who just got out.
Sort of a swinging bunt. Don says Hullet, and I think that’s hit number, but Wagner was due up. Maybe Tito just messed with the batting order when he made the substitutions.
4-2 Mets going to the 9th.
USG
One thing in MDC's favor
While his splits are fairly even, he’s better against lefties.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.
by Drugs Delaney on Mar 17, 2010 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions
If MDC could get consistent, he really would be a good closer.
Such good stuff when he’s on. Strikes out the 3rd batter.
Sox gonna need at least 2 in the 9th.
USG
Angel Sanchez keeps the Sox alive with a line drive single.
Reid Engel is the tying run at the plate.
USG
What did he do?
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.
by Drugs Delaney on Mar 17, 2010 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions
Making a bunch of faces at the camera over Tito's shoulder, then timed Tito looking over his shoulder perfectly.
By the time Tito checked over his other shoulder, Cameron was catching balls from fans to sign.

Just got back from the game.
Lackey looked good (I actually missed the top of the 1st inning, do to traffic at the sausage stand). He was very efficient. Seemed like he had a couple of innings under ten pitches.
Beltre’s play off of Lackey’s foot was awesome.
I like Reddick. He hammered his single, then hustled his way out of a rundown. I could see him spending significant time with us this year.
Hermida had a nice single too.
Paps looked good.
Nothing else really to report. Cool day at the pahk (65 degrees). Sat next to a guy who says he went to USF and pitched against Alex Cora in the College World Series in ’95. Says he got him out. Then he played ball in the Northern League, in St. Paul, and gave up a homer to Papi.
Manny ain't the only bad man.
