Hermidia?

Seems like from what I’ve been reading, he’s having a pretty good spring – though admittedly I having been fully immersed in Soxville just yet.

Would be great to make sure he gets enough ABs for a solid sample this year, and given Drew’s injury history and Cameron’s age – he looks like he could be a solid #4 this year.

Question I have is what does everyone thinks his maximum potential could be?
RF replacement for Drew in 2yrs? LF? Does he still have the potential to grow into a quality corner OF, or has that shipped sailed and what we saw the last couple years is what we get here?

by JonnyNYC on Mar 16, 2010 1:55 PM EDT reply actions

I'm thinking Kalish or Reddick, maybe even Lin

As Drew’s replacement. Hermida is going to have to prove a lot I think for the Sox to keep him around as more than a good #4. Might be more positioning by Theo than anything else.

Hermida

Hermida is only 26 this season. Looking at his track record from the minors he had 1728 PAs and posted a 0.398 OBP, 0.834 OPS. He actually showed better on base skills as a youngster than power, but of course power develops in numerous players over time. He has struggled in the majors hitting lefties to the tune of a 0.697 OPS vs. 0.792 vs. righties. His fielding has been less than stellar for the past three years so I doubt he fits into RF with Boston. That said he could be valuable LF piece should Ellsbury be moved

by BobZupcic on Mar 16, 2010 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

My take

personally, I don’t think his fielding is solid enough to be a viable starting OF for the Sox unless his bat improves very dramatically- like better than the one good year he had. Especially with all the young OFs the Sox have in the minors who should be ready in not too long and will be significantly cheaper than Hermida. I think he ends up traded before the year is out.

Seems like the Sox offense has been dead.

The best part of the lineup has done nothing. Varitek, of all people, is the MVP so far. Other than him, it’s Hermida and Sanchez with the other 2 trips to the basepaths.

Lester was OK, but not great.

Atchison continues to fire scoreless innings.

loving what I've seen and heard of Atchison.

I hope he makes the pen.. Especially because we have him for about 400k for 3 years if we want.

by wolf9309 on Mar 16, 2010 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it's between Atchison and Shouse.

If we really feel we need another lefty, we’ll go Shouse.

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 16, 2010 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah I'm pretty sure it is

I really just don’t like Shouse, I’d much rather see Atchison in and if MDC is ineffective boot him in favor of someone like Richardson.

Really, I don’t think lefty thing is a huge deal as most of the pen (except Bard) hasn’t had terrible platoon splits over their careers.

by wolf9309 on Mar 16, 2010 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

There were pretty awful platoon splits last year, though.

And Bard was actually better against lefties in 2008, interestingly.

Alex Speier wrote a bit about both Nelson and Atchison having weapons against lefties

Link

It’s possible if Atchison continues to do well against both righties and lefties he could get the last spot.

A loud out for Longoria.

Joe got all ready to call the long ball, but it hung up there and Kalish finished the inning.

Very quick 1-2-3 for Doubront.

2nd baserunner of the day for the Rays.

Doubront isn't afraid to throw his curve today. Hitting the strike zone a fair amount too.

If he can bring that pitch into the fold with his changeup, his stock could take a bump.

Beltre recording plenty of outs today.

Crawford grounds out, and the inning is over. Good showing from Doubront so far. A hit, a walk, a K, and a bunch of groundouts against a strong TB lineup.

Kalish’ arm gets good marks from Joe.

I wonder

If Atchison forces the Sox to take a look at him with the big league club, and Daisuke is on the DL to start the year, could Bonser’s supposed lock spot be in jeopardy if Shouse does well?

USG

by Ben Buchanan on Mar 16, 2010 8:14 PM EDT reply actions

I'm not sure I understand why everyone thinks he has a lock

sure, useful as a spot starter, but he seems to have an option year left, so I don’t see any reason he can’t be in Pawtucket until needed. No real long man in the pen, but not sure that’s a huge priority with the rotation being what it is.
