Hermidia?
Seems like from what I’ve been reading, he’s having a pretty good spring – though admittedly I having been fully immersed in Soxville just yet.
Would be great to make sure he gets enough ABs for a solid sample this year, and given Drew’s injury history and Cameron’s age – he looks like he could be a solid #4 this year.
Question I have is what does everyone thinks his maximum potential could be?
RF replacement for Drew in 2yrs? LF? Does he still have the potential to grow into a quality corner OF, or has that shipped sailed and what we saw the last couple years is what we get here?
I'm thinking Kalish or Reddick, maybe even Lin
As Drew’s replacement. Hermida is going to have to prove a lot I think for the Sox to keep him around as more than a good #4. Might be more positioning by Theo than anything else.
"We are not normal, We are Legends. People will tell their kids about us." - Deon Butler before Ohio State Game 2008.
Hermida
Hermida is only 26 this season. Looking at his track record from the minors he had 1728 PAs and posted a 0.398 OBP, 0.834 OPS. He actually showed better on base skills as a youngster than power, but of course power develops in numerous players over time. He has struggled in the majors hitting lefties to the tune of a 0.697 OPS vs. 0.792 vs. righties. His fielding has been less than stellar for the past three years so I doubt he fits into RF with Boston. That said he could be valuable LF piece should Ellsbury be moved
My take
personally, I don’t think his fielding is solid enough to be a viable starting OF for the Sox unless his bat improves very dramatically- like better than the one good year he had. Especially with all the young OFs the Sox have in the minors who should be ready in not too long and will be significantly cheaper than Hermida. I think he ends up traded before the year is out.
Seems like the Sox offense has been dead.
The best part of the lineup has done nothing. Varitek, of all people, is the MVP so far. Other than him, it’s Hermida and Sanchez with the other 2 trips to the basepaths.

Lester was OK, but not great.
Atchison continues to fire scoreless innings.

loving what I've seen and heard of Atchison.
I hope he makes the pen.. Especially because we have him for about 400k for 3 years if we want.
I think it's between Atchison and Shouse.
If we really feel we need another lefty, we’ll go Shouse.
USG

yeah I'm pretty sure it is
I really just don’t like Shouse, I’d much rather see Atchison in and if MDC is ineffective boot him in favor of someone like Richardson.
Really, I don’t think lefty thing is a huge deal as most of the pen (except Bard) hasn’t had terrible platoon splits over their careers.
There were pretty awful platoon splits last year, though.
And Bard was actually better against lefties in 2008, interestingly.

Alex Speier wrote a bit about both Nelson and Atchison having weapons against lefties
It’s possible if Atchison continues to do well against both righties and lefties he could get the last spot.

Had class.
I’m in for the late game, but I figure most other people will be too.

Really? I thought he was in the Phillie's system?
"We are not normal, We are Legends. People will tell their kids about us." - Deon Butler before Ohio State Game 2008.
Got in a little late. Wade Davis strikes out the side.
Uh-oh. Don’t need him fulfilling his promise and then some.
USG
A loud out for Longoria.
Joe got all ready to call the long ball, but it hung up there and Kalish finished the inning.
Very quick 1-2-3 for Doubront.
USG
Ortiz keeps it going.
Takes the first pitch he sees to the opposite field with a line drive single.
USG
Kalish hits it hard, but right at Zobrist.
Papi and Cameron stranded. 0-0 headed to the bottom of the 2nd.
USG
Navarro flies out to Drew
Doubront has successfully avoided damage from some lefty killers so far.
USG
Doubront isn't afraid to throw his curve today. Hitting the strike zone a fair amount too.
If he can bring that pitch into the fold with his changeup, his stock could take a bump.
USG
Beltre recording plenty of outs today.
Crawford grounds out, and the inning is over. Good showing from Doubront so far. A hit, a walk, a K, and a bunch of groundouts against a strong TB lineup.
USG
Drew grounds into that Ortiz shift the Rays like to put on him.
Let’s see what Papi does against it.
USG
Smoltz signed on for TBS according to Joe.
That makes plenty of sense.

Indeed
It’s a shame how things ended with him here.

Rizzo misreads a popup which drops behind him.
Atypical for a plus defensive first baseman like Rizzo.
USG
Beltre with the cannon arm avoids a potential error.
Knocks it down, picks it up, and guns it to first in a hurry.
USG
Bonser throws Pena four curveballs.
Pena swings and misses at three of them. Guy sounds lost at the plate.
USG
Zobrist, however, is having no problems at all
Shoots one past Rizzo for his 2nd double of the night.
USG
Bonser treads carefully around Burrell.
4-pitch walk to bring up Upton. Pick your guy who would’ve been considered poison 2 years ago situation, I guess?
USG
Upton with a chopper past Bonser. Beltre picks it up, but holds onto it.
Bases loaded, and this inning has become a little tricky all-of-a-sudden.
USG
And things are falling apart for Boof.
A HBP that bounces hits the dirt before it hits Navarro forces in the run.
USG
Bonser finally gets out of the inning with a flyout to Drew.
Bizarre ending there with the dribbler and the HBP before Kapler’s line drive to left.
Kalish’ arm gets good marks from Joe.
USG
I wonder
If Atchison forces the Sox to take a look at him with the big league club, and Daisuke is on the DL to start the year, could Bonser’s supposed lock spot be in jeopardy if Shouse does well?
USG
I'm not sure I understand why everyone thinks he has a lock
sure, useful as a spot starter, but he seems to have an option year left, so I don’t see any reason he can’t be in Pawtucket until needed. No real long man in the pen, but not sure that’s a huge priority with the rotation being what it is.
Dusty Brown walks down to first with the second walk for the Sox tonight.
Wheeler can’t have his walks go back up if he wants to be effective.
USG
Joe's partner, whose name I'm afraid I don't know, just cited Wheeler's low BABIP as being unsustainable.
I am putting him on the good list.
USG
Wheeler comes back to K Scutaro on another questionable pitch.
Umpire giving the Rays the corners today.
USG
Lester, Rizzo, Westmoreland
The Sox seem to have an inordinate number of these stories. Hopefully Westmoreland follows them in having the happy ending.
USG
Crawford gets on his horse and absolutely robs Anthony Rizzo.
Making good contact off of a major league pitcher has to make a guy fresh out of Salem pretty happy though.
USG
Pena still can't connect.
Another K, on the Slider this time.
Here comes the Rays’ hero of the night, Zobrist.
USG
Beltre flairs one right to Pena, and the inning is over.
Sox running out of chances to score any runs today at all.
USG
Our lineup doesn't scare anyone!!1!
They need some scary masks to wear. I bet Youk would look very scary dressed as a werewolf.

All those fun minor leaguers we thought were gone are back up.
Lin takes over in right field for Drew.
USG
Lin shows his speed in the outfield to grab a Navarro flyball on the run.
Inning over. To the 7th we go.
USG
Place replaces Cameron, Lin goes to center.
Ray Chiang takes over for Hall. Natale at third, Spears at short, Jorge Sosa on the mound.
USG
Hank Blalock reaches second on an error from Jeff Natale. Just whiffed on the grounder.
More good reports for Kalish’ arm from Joe.
USG
Jorge Sosa gets kind of screwed.
Scorer changed the call from an error to a double, and the run is earned now.
USG
Hope I didn't jinx him.
Double for Elliot Johnson

there was a glitch earlier today on mlb.com that allowed people to get mlb.tv for one year for 19.95 tons of people got it.
Trade Beckett before the deadline
JD Drew the stud who is.
I'm taking suggestions from myself on the 2010 rally song.
Re-sign Victor Martinez, the future DH of the Boston Red Sox
Am I supposed to like John Lackey ?
They're probably getting their money back and the subscription cancelled.
Then again, maybe not. Money is money and I doubt it hurts MLB a lot to get a bunch of subscriptions from people who wouldn’t otherwise buy it.

was a great deal if they get it.
Extra innings package went up to 179 this year-at least I think I paid 160 last summer.
