Nomar Garciaparra to Sign With Red Sox, Retire

From WEEI's Alex Speier:

WEEI.com's Lou Merloni reports that Nomar Garciaparra will sign a one-day, minor league deal with the Red Sox and then announce his retirement as a member of the organization. Garciaparra will then commence a career as a baseball analyst for ESPN.

[...]

The Red Sox are holding a 10:30 a.m. press conference in Fort Myers at which Garciaparra will announce his retirement.

Nice that any bad blood is apparently healed and he's coming back to retire as a Red Sox.

Now we all just have to sit here and pray that with his retirement, maybe the shortstop curse will be over.

good

well I am glad he is retiring as a Red Sox, and think he is doing the right thing. Maybe a year or so late

That’s some great news

Agreed on the SS curse...

Perhaps Scut will have a career year after a career year with the possible lifting of the SS curse? Of course this would also be complemented nicely by Beltre having a repeat 2004. I may or may not have dreamed that last night.

I don't believe in curses

I’m happy that Nomar is able to retire as a Red Sox. I have fond memories of Nomar. He’ll always be one of my favorite Sox players.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Welcome Back!!

This is terrific. I remember when he left Boston, it was a mixed and painful moment for me. At the time, it was the right thing to do to help win that World Series, but Nomar was a fixture…..at that time he was the face of the team. Remember the days of arguing with Yankees fans of who the better Shortstop was? Oh yeah, good days!

I am glad he will retire as a Bosox!! Next is his induction to the HOF as a Red Sox!

You da man Nomar!!!!!

I loved cheering for Nomah

And who, at one time or another, didn’t imitate his OCD routine stepping into the batter’s box? (That being said, he’s destined for the Hall of Very Good, not the Hall of Fame.)

Thanks for the great years Nomar, and something to root for during the Awful Years.

And now I can start wearing my Nomah jerseys again, woo!!

Regardless of my personal feelings, this is definitely a classy move by all involved.

It says a lot that Garciparra would retire as a member of the Red Sox organization. In spite of the bad blood and acrimony around his departure, he won a spot in the heart of many a Red Sox fan, and deserves to go out wearing the Olde Towne Team’s colors.

Does this mean

That for today only I can order a Garciaparra shirt from MLB.com? Glad to see him retiring where he should be.

Class all around

I more or less just woke up to this news, but it’s really made my day already. I’m happy for Nomah, and he earned that respect. Although, don’t we have a spot left on the 40-man roster? It can’t have hurt to put him there.

We do, but ... no.

Here’s a prediction: Nomar goes back, works out a ton and tries it again next year. Maybe the Sox will see what he has in spring…

Rather...

I meant for the day. I don’t think he should keep playing, but with 39 men on the 40 man roster, there was a free spot from which he could retire.

Nomar is my fav player

So this is pretty cool. I will always remember how Nomar ran out everything that he hit. He could hit a shot 400+ feet and he still would run it out until it hit the stands. I cant wait until they retire his number and have a Nomar Day at Fenway.

So the front office would rather

put Bill Hall on the field than Nomar Garciaparra for backup!!!@?!??!?!

Dude

his career line is .323/.370 OBP/.553 with the Sox, that means that’s what he would hit off the bench if he came back, no matter how old and broken he is.

I find it terrible that people see past Nomar's antics

Trade Beckett before the deadline
JD Drew the stud who is.
I'm taking suggestions from myself on the 2010 rally song.
Re-sign Victor Martinez, the future DH of the Boston Red Sox
Am I supposed to like John Lackey ?

People forget how good this guy was.

He was up there with A-Rod. Jeter was not nearly the player Nomar was. Too bad that didn’t last.

Nomar

I applaud the Red Sox for allowing Nomar to come home…. I think that one of the great tragedies of baseball was the fact that Dale Murphy carried the Braves for many years, with many bad teams, and after he was traded, the Braves became a powerhouse….. When Murphy was ready to retire, why didn’t the Braves bring him back in September to be a part of the good times?
