Kelly, Anderson Highlight Spring Training Invitees

The Red Sox announced today the list of non-rostered players invited to spring training:

Pitchers (10)
Randor Bierd
Fernando Cabrera
Kris Johnson
Casey Kelly
Adam Mills
Edwin Moreno
Joe Nelson
Brian Shouse
Jorge Sosa
Kyle Weiland

Catchers (2)
Luis Exposito
Gustavo Molina

Infielders (4)
Lars Anderson
Yamaico Navarro
Angel Sanchez
Gil Velazquez

Outfelders (4)
Zach Daeges
Ryan Kalish
Che-Hsuan Lin
Darnell McDonald

It's nice to see Lars there. They Sox will be keeping a close eye on him to see how he does in the spring. He could really surprise us, which would be fantastic. Kalish and Lin should be fun to watch if they get a good amount of playing time, which really isn't likely. Exposito will be one of the prospects to watch, too. Personally, I expect really good things out of him.

Oh, and there's also OTM's No. 1 prospect Kelly in the mix. All eyes will be on his arm come March.

Not a lot of open roster spots, as per usual.

But plenty of intrigue as far as where guys will end up in the minors. Kalish says he wants to start in AAA, the organization made that surprising remark about Kelly in Portland, and they probably want to look into Lin’s contact issues. Plus, where the hell will Iglesias start out? My money’s on AA, but we’ll see how he does in Florida.

Seems like Weiland is a guy to watch. A lot of people have him pegged for a breakout year. He’s got some control issues, but did well for himself in Salem.

Other things to watch:
If Kris Johnson is converted to a reliever.
Zach Daeges’ return. He was always a little old for his league, but he’s got ridiculous plate discipline and could add some extra home run pop. He’s my dark horse guy for the year.
How much time Wagner gets behind the plate
Lars, Lars, Lars
And Jed too!

Oh, and I really wish Nava got an invite.

What better chance to let him see some age-appropriate talent?

True.

Nava would have been sweet. I guess we’ll see him start in AA?

Probably

If he’d gotten an invite, I could see a AAA start. But they probably don’t want to risk overcrowding when Kalish gets the bump.

Forgot all about Nava

Would rather see him in their than a throwaway like McDonald.

MacDonald

They need him in ST because he definitely could see time in the bigs in 2010. He’s an older player with some experience — a kind of player the Sox would prefer to bring up over a younger guy.
