Projecting The 2010 Red Sox Lineup: The 6 Spot
This Red Sox lineup -- crafted by the fine users of OTM -- is looking good after David Ortiz's placement in the five-hole:
- Jacoby Ellsbury
- Dustin Pedroia
- Victor Martinez
- Kevin Youkilis
- David Ortiz
Now we move to the No. 6 spot. Should the Sox go back-to-back lefties and insert J.D. Drew here? Or should they go for some more power in either Mike Cameron or Adrian Beltre? Maybe Marco Scutaro could work here ... or not.
So, who should bat sixth?

Went Beltre
As much as I love JD, the fact that he is down to 6 already is a shame, he might as well go to the 7th and give Beltre some protection. Beltre is a free swinger and will get some better pitches with JD behind him.
Can't be JD
You could put someone like Youk, with no noticeable L/R splits next to another righty, but JD and Ortiz next to each other is just begging for trouble late in games.
Plus Beltre is the man.
he does but
not nearly as good as his numbers vs. right handed pitchers. Not the type of splits you sit him against lefties for, but I think you keep them in mind making the order. Plus if he’s number 6, the whole bottom third is righties, and only Scutaro has negligible splits.
It just makes matchup choices too easy on other teams.
Cameron
Has some pop in his bat. Also has some speed and is a decent on base guy. You can look at the 6,7 holes as another top of the lineup. A little bit of pop and a little bit of small ball. With Beltrre in the 8 hole and Scoots in the 9.
I really thought Drew would be the choice
So I put Beltre as the pic. Hmm.

Tito has folks obsessed with LRLRLR I think.

it's not something to ignore
While Drew is good against lefties, his OPS is a full 70 points better against righties (he’s VERY good against righties), so you want to maximize the amounts of righties he is batting against. If the bottom half of the lineup is Ortiz-Drew-Beltre-Cameron-Scut, then you’re going to see a lot of opponents switch on Ortiz to a lefty reliever and then switch after Drew to a righty. If he is surrounded by Beltre and Cameron, both of whom are better against righties, they’re less likely to switch to a lefty reliever for just one batter- he’ll see more righties over the course of the year and so perform better.
I really think the lineup is actually maximized with having switch-hitting Martinez batting 7th, where he can pretty much destroy matchup decisions.
I think the real point isn't avoiding LL at Ortiz-Drew
Its to avoid RRR with Beltre-Cam-Scoot.
LRLRLR is valid strategy not only for protecting your own hitter’s splits (assuming they even have issues) but also for forcing your opponent’s hand in regard to whether he can go to his bullpen or not.
I voted Drew
And I still think it should be Drew… But the more I come back to the thread and see Beltre at the top… Perhaps I made a mistake :)
Should have two lineups in this piece.
vs. LHP and vs. RHP. If they’re facing a righty, I want Drew next. But against a lefty, Beltre.
This is where it gets tricky...
I like Drew and his OBP as high in the lineup as possible, but I agree that back-to-back lefties isn’t ideal. Especially late.
I expect Beltre to be good now that he’s out of Safeco, and that actually makes me like Drew ahead of him even more… but Drew would be stuck behind the slower Ortiz…
see… tricky.
I voted for Cameron
At least for right now, I think Beltre should be batting 8th. I know he was hurt last year, but I can’t ignore that offensive dropoff, I think until we know what he can do he should be slotted in 8th. So Cam or Drewski should be going 6th, depending on if you want the lefty/righty thing.
If I was your math homework I'd be really hard and you'd be doing me on your desk.
I'm a 7 WAR player in bed.
Beltre
Sad JD slipped this low also, but he can surely anchor the bottom third of the lineup. Thats what happens when you have a deep ballclub. Great players like Drew get pushed to the back unfortunately. I think Drew should bat 5th, but then Ortiz can’t slip to 7, that would potentially end his career. In Boston anyway.
Tangent aside, Beltre is the obvious choice here.
Beltre's a free-swinger
And he’s going to kill momentum too frequently this high in the order. It’s gotta be Drew. If you don’t like Drew here, then flip-flop with V-Mart, who really shouldn’t be the #3, in my opinion.
"You know you're having a bad day when the fifth inning rolls around and they drag the warning track." - Mike Flanagan, Baltimore Orioles pitcher, 1992.
So who is most likely to have better success at the plate at Fenway?
Beltre or Cameron?
Whoever the answer is put in 6th and have the other at 8 with Drew in the middle.
Either way. This lineup is going to be good. Better than people think. (Outside of OTM of course)
I think Beltre will have a better year
and he has a much higher ceiling. This is a guy that can possibly hit 35 homers. Even though Cameron is probably a safer bet to get to 25 homers.
I like Belte more
With Cameron’s dead pull hitting, he may do better at Fenway than Beltre by a bit, but I think Beltre will in general have a better offensive year.
Really, I don’t think there are any slouches in the lineup.
With Drew behind Beltre
He’ll get slightly better pitches.
Since this is so tight...
Poll closes at noon on Friday. Good luck!

I don't mind
the whole “LRLRLRL” line up in regards to batting, but with Beltre being a free swinger and all, I’m thinking Drew. But then again, at the same time, having Drew behind Beltre may just force pitchers to throw something “meaty” at Beltre for him to hit.
In looking at it in now, Beltre seems like the more logical choice here with Drew batting 7th, Cam at 8th, and Scooter at 9th.
Throwing Drew that low in the order screws with the opposing manager because as much as fans lambaste his performance (and that’s really only due to his contract, something ownership and Theo negotiated with Boras), he’s still a power and OBP threat that one won’t find that low in the order.
this is how I feel
since we’ve already determined Drew can’t be third, where he should be.
The difference in plate appearances between the 6 and 7 spot is approximately 18 over the course of a season. I’d rather have the split safety and Beltre getting better pitches.
As much as I'd prefer to have Drew bat in the top 4
part of Tito’s philosophy behind putting Drew down in 7-8-9 is to prevent the opposing pitcher to have a low pitch count inning. Drew eats up pitches.
That’s legitimate thinking – especially much last year when two of the other guys batting down there were Varitek and Lugo/Green. Can you imagine how many more 1-2-3 innings there would have been if Drew wasn’t there to break that up?
Speaking of V-Mart
Unless he drives in less runs than Drew, why shouldn’t he be in the 3-hole? Seeing as how the 3-4 hitters are supposed to drive guys in based upon this “lineup,” it doesn’t make sense for V-Mart to be down in the order.
I can understand he’s a switch hitter and such, but compared to his ability to drive in runs, I’d say that’s small.
a hitter's ability to drive in runs
is exactly equal to their ability to hit. Drew can hit- in fact stats point to Drew being able to hit better than Martinez. He just has been used mainly low in the order, where he has less guys on base to drive in than someone high in the order has. Don’t mistake this for him being unable to drive runners in. Martinez is a fantastic hitter, especially for a catcher, but just not as good at it as Drew.
