Depends upon the ranking system you use

In terms of getting on base which is pretty darn important in order to score runs

Choo 0.394
Drew 0.392
Suzuki 0.386
Upton 0.366
Ethier 0.361
Markakis 0.347
Dye 0.340

Stats

by BobZupcic on Feb 24, 2010 11:14 PM EST reply actions

JD

is definitely the 2nd most effective player on this list all around. In my opinion Ichiro being the biggest game changer, and Choo just behind Drew. I like Ethier’s ability in the clutch, which is something most people don’t talk about in baseball blogging, but something you can’t really measure statistically unless you measure AVG, OBP, RBI’s after the 7th. I’d take him next. Then Markakis, then Upton, then a toss up between two vastly overrrated players.

by David Harnden on Feb 24, 2010 11:37 PM EST reply actions

It really depends on what you go by

so I’m not voting. Justin Upton definitely has the most upside, being 22 and great. Markakis isn’t far off if he can recapture what ability he has shown in the past (he’s had one really great year). Ethier’s pretty good. Cruz and Dye aren’t. Choo is great, and Suzuki is the best at what he does. For a long term contract? I’d take Upton. For a year? I’d take Choo or Drew.

by wolf9309 on Feb 24, 2010 11:42 PM EST reply actions

If I could have any, I'd take Upton.

Because likely will be the best of the bunch going forward. He’s not there yet, bu he’s got all the potential in the world.

by tommy.otm on Feb 24, 2010 11:42 PM EST reply actions

Yup.

I would take Upton going forward. But for just next year? I think Drew might be the guy. Upton and Choo are not fully proven and Ichiro seems to be declining.

You are not right.

Your poll asks for who is “better.” And as Zupcic pointed out, using statistics, last year Drew was the 3rd best. At worst he is 4th best. Out of 30 starting RFs in the majors, JD Drew is among the best. There’s no real argument there.

defense

not as valuable as u all think playing right field

by steelersfamily7@aol.com on Feb 25, 2010 8:27 AM EST up reply actions

Maybe in beer league soft ball

Defense and run-prevention are very important. The problem is most fans and sportswriters only focus on offense. A team can score a lot of runs and still not be good. Here’s an example: the 2008 Texas Rangers, who lead the AL in run-scoring with 901 runs. They only won 79 games and missed the playoffs because they allowed 967 runs. Last year the Rangers won 87 games, despite only scoring 784 runs. How would you explain the improvement? It’s easy—Texas cut down the runs they allowed from 967 to 740.

In MLB, the best defensive OF is usually in CF (assuming that particular OF can play the position). The second most important OF position is RF because of the long throw. RF have to be quick to the ball to keep runners from going from first to third on base hits. While not all LF are stiffs, it is the position where teams usually put their worst defensive OF (sort of like 1B in the IF). Another thing, RF in Fenway is very tough. It’s large and it’s a “sun field” in day games.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Feb 25, 2010 9:53 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed. As a memeber of a team that went 0- season for a few years.

Having people that can cleanly catch fly balls and field grounders is HUUUUUUGE. Everybody can hit the snot out of the ball, but the really good teams are making all the routine plays in the field and minimizing the damage.

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

by CasanovaWong on Feb 25, 2010 12:15 PM EST up reply actions

No he's right - we put our 2nd worst fielding girl in right field.

Because there aren’t many balls that get hit there, defense is over-rated. I mean come on, they only shift the infield to the right when Ortiz bats – not the entire outfield!

When Galileo wanted to support his Copernican version of the universe

He wrote a book with a character named “Simplicio” to make foolish arguments in favor of Aristotle’s system.

Sometimes, the best way to get your point across to a wider audience is to have someone argue the opposite viewpoint very poorly. The good news is that, Steelersfamily, being a real person arguing of his own volition, is not subject to that strawman accusations (however much he is a fan of USING them)

Fun fact: Simplicio was likely based on Galileo’s friend, then Pope Urban VIII, who was so offended at this apparent betrayal that he started the whole prosecution brew-ha-ha.

Drew

By virtue that he does everything right but is still two years younger than Ichiro who will certainly go into the hall of fame. Drew gets on base and plays great, game changing defense. I’m picking him by what he HAS done, not what he MIGHT do in cases like Upton or Choo.

Thank goodness you’ll never be a GM.

So what did you expect really? You just made a poll on a Red Sox fan site. Of course I want JD Drew, he’s the right fielder that we have who doesn’t do anything wrong, he’s great on offense and is great on defense, why would I bother trading the pieces to get anyone else who would probably produce less than JD Drew + the prospects we would have to give up to get him?? If you say he isn’t a very good player you sir are an idiot and should go back to your fantasy drafts because even with a dozen people spelling it out for you, you can’t come to grips with the realities of baseball, real GMs and teams value defense and the ability to get on base, counting stats don’t really matter and further education is actually pretty worth the money.

Theo on D&C
If we want to evaluate a team or a player the way you do, what is the best way?
It depends how you like viewing the game of baseball.
We like good players, we don’t like bad ones.
All right, there are ways you can break down a player’s performance, his statistics, what he does, and come up with a value on how much he adds offensively vs. an average player or a player who is readily available. You can break that down and say he’s worth this many runs per season. A great player would be worth, say, 40 runs more than an average player. It’s about 10 run equals a win, so you say that player vs. a guy that we can call up from Triple A is going to win four more games. Significantly you could do the same thing with his base running and with his defense.

The Interview is just AWESOME, he tackles a lot of other issues like the farm system and defense (giving the example of Tampa) I love you Theo :)

And if you're surprised at me...

Randy didn’t even warn him! Though he also probably didn’t see the posts he was warned for until after I got to ’em.

They are for opinions.

You stated your opinion, and then spent the next 50 posts ridiculing anyone who came up with an intelligent counter-opinion without actually coming up with any valid counter-argument of your own.

yes, it's for discussion

but you are not discussing, you are just making poorly supported statements and ignoring anything anyone else says. You’re welcome to have an opinion, even one I disagree with, but you aren’t open to discussion, you’re just set in your opinions and unwilling to listen to what anyone else says. And then making up ridiculous things you claim other people have said, such as the tangent you went on about “DREW MUST BE A HALL OF FAMER.”

And frankly, it’s hard to read your thoughts and take them seriously without any semblance of punctuation. You don’t need to pay thousands of dollars and go to college to learn punctuation. I knew how to use a period AND a comma when I was in kindergarten. It just looks sloppy and like you aren’t even trying, which is going to make everyone automatically predisposed to think that your points are stupid.

He is clearly trolling.

As he is doing the EXACT same thing on CelticsBlog. Writing up a fan post and trying to argue his point, but when someone disagrees he makes an asinine comment and calls them stupid. Maybe if he actually typed like a regular human being then he wouldn’t come off so bad.

Ah, but see

It’s possible that’s not even him trolling. I’d think it was, were it not for the fact that he’s also trolling the Steelers’ blog. Just seems an odd distribution.
