Projecting The 2010 Red Sox Lineup: No. 5
Not so close for No. 4: Kevin Youkilis walks away with this title.
Here's how the OTM lineup is looking now:
- Jacoby Ellsbury
- Dustin Pedroia
- Victor Martinez
- Kevin Youkilis
- ???
Now for the five-spot. Who's going to be the lucky guy to hit behind Youk?

Scutaro
I’d be interested to hear the rationale behind the votes for Scutaro, and his career high 12 HRs and 60 RBIs, at #4 and #5.
I think it goes something like this
Marco Scutaro’s career year in 2009 was a turning point, and he’ll start to hit for even more power. This might be convincing if he were 28 or 29, but at age 34, Scutaro is not only going not going to be as good as he was last year, he’s going to come crashing down to earth.
The real reason is that we have to give the Yankee fans / trolls something to vote for.
We have lingered in the chambers of the sea /

Till human voices wake us, and we drown.
With that amount
of optimism you expect the Red Sox to miss the playoff this season, eh?
I don’t think he’ll come crashing down to earth; however he may not hit the career highs he hit last season. Perhaps a .278 AVG, 9 HRs, 50 RBIs? Just a guess.
I voted Drew
because i think he is the superior hitter compared to Ortiz and Randy has to be wrong with his influencing picture choice atleast once. ;)

I gotta' do SOMETHING for a pic
Ortiz was the first I saw… (and I actually voted Drew)

I went Ortiz
because I like going lefty-righty-lefty, which dictates to me that Beltre makes the most sense for the 6 hole, and with Beltre’s low OBP, I’d rather have the most power in the 5 hole. That way in 7th (I STILL wish Drew was 3…) Drew can start another round of solid OBP guys.
Drew would work fine too, but I’d give Ortiz a little edge.
This is Tito's stated rationale for why he likes Drew down in the 7-9 slots.
Especially last year with Tek and our SS-of-the-month sucking, it helped to prevent the pitchers’ from having 1-2-3 and otherwise small-pitch-count innings.
Didn’t help Drew’s ‘money stats’ (RBIs & Runs scored) batting within the dregs of the lineup. But it is not an unreasonable strategy.
I don't like this rationale.
Drew is a better hitter. Period. He should hit higher than Ortiz or Beltre.
"Ninety percent [of my salary] I'll spend on good times, women, and Irish whiskey. The other ten percent I'll probably waste."
-Tug McGraw
i can see that point
And I still feel strongly Drew should be in 3.
Another reason is that Beltre has a tendency to GIDP (though not as bad as Lowell was), and so I’m not sure I’d want him batting right after Drew, who very, very frequently ends up on first. Ortiz seems more likely to me to be on second when he gets on than drew does (even in his off-year, Ortiz has 64 extra-base hits compared to Drew’s 58). Of course I wouldn’t want Ortiz to stick if he doesn’t have a resurgence.
But yeah, I can fully understand why some people would not agree.
I choose Papi
I think Ortiz brings it this year. You hear? Bloggy is predicting big things from the Big Man.
Mark that shit DOWN.

Got it
Bloggy is getting a big thing from a big man. :)
"big thingS" ... plural
Not sure what that means.
Papi
More out of respect and the fact that I believe he’ll bounce back somewhat. Should he falter again, Drew should step in

I've concluded that this whole exercise
is nothing more than a sinister Pavlovian experiment that Randy will present for his Behavioral Psychology class. The photos, like ringing bells, are a cue to vote for whichever player he points to. This will become especially apparent in the voting for Lineup Spots 6-9, in which Marco Scutaro, Manny Ramirez, Johnny Damon and Julio Lugo will win because their pictures are next to the poll.
I, for one, will not be fooled. That’s why I’m voting for David Ortiz!

whatever 0157h7 said, i agree
i keep seeing ortiz flashing in my eyes, as if i had looked at a bright light.
gotta vote for ortiz. with jd on deck. vices versas would be ok too. but it’s the picture…
Where's the love for JD?
Dude should not be batting lower than 5th.
If I was your math homework I'd be really hard and you'd be doing me on your desk.

There is no love for JD Drew.

damn
i feel dirty after reading that. Darn you!

how would a pirates fan even recognize a major league player?

He would rock that 3-hole like you've never seen before.
I’m talking 1.7 OPS here, freaking godlike.
Heh, jk. But anywhere above 5th, preferably batting in front of Youk.

JD & Youk should be 3/4 or 4/3, fo sho'
I really like V-Mart’s offensive ability at catcher, but I think he’s better suited for the 5-hole, in front of Ortizzle.

Yes, but...
… I know for me sentimentality and optimism are going to play a large part in this. I voted more for who I want Papi to be this year. Stick me in a dugout and tell me to fill out the line-up card for the game, and maybe I change my tune.
Should be Drew
Will be Ortiz. I think Tito will go with the more sentimental choice, but if Papi starts the season at all like last year, I would expect Drew to take up that spot.
yeah I fully expect Ortiz to start here for the year
but I also fully expect him to not last long there if he isn’t doing well.
Anyone remember the opening day lineup last year?
Ellsbury
Pedroia
Ortiz
Youk
Drew
Bay
Lowell
Lowrie
Varitek
That sure changed a lot over the year.
Stealsbury
Pedie
Value-Mart
Youk
Papi
The Belter
Drew
Cam
Scooter
I can see that being the Opening Day lineup, and it looks pretty good to me. But if Papi starts off slow and Ells’ OBP stumbles again, Scooter will probably be leading off, Drew will be hitting 5th, Papi will be hitting behind the Belter, and Ells will go 9th.

great but add drewski (with a tip of my hat to pacol50)
that’s the problem with work – it interferes with baseball and sometimes my drinking

"Drewski"
Got my vote. Only because he’s a bit better than Ortiz at this moment in his career than Big Papi. Ben posted some OBP and SLG stats in the “No. 4” thread and that swayed me (and I’m too lazy and preoccupied at work to post ’em here ;-) ).
As much as I love Big Papi, and am behind him 100%, he should be starting at 6th unless he proves otherwise.
Although there is some aspect of a toss up here because of how Drew rarely bats against lefty-starters. Granted that doesn’t happen often. I do wonder how this will pan out. I want to see how Papi will hit with Drew in front of him and vice versa. Definitely interesting to see over the course of ST and the first couple of months.
Drew had 114 ABs against lefties last year.
And managed a line of .272/.381/.482. Not as good as against righties, but really very good and certainly not something to bench him against lefties for.

The Sox would likely run away with the AL East
If Ells could put up those kinds of OBP numbers next year. . . .
Didn't Drew
Not start against lefty starters? Or am I mistaken. I could swear Tito had him sit many of those games.
Who else would be out there?
I think when we had Coco, Ells and Drew, Drew sat more. But that is just imperfect memory.
nah it's just that when he did sit
it was usually against lefty starters. Which was just as much because Rocco is much better against lefties than righties. Drew played mostly against everyone, just when Tito thought he needed a day off he tended to save it for a lefty starter.
Ortiz,
6- Beltre
7- Drew
8- Cameron
9- Scutaro

Drew
Dont know why people think drew should be in there. He will just decline. Ortiz was hot at the end of the year last year. Its either beltre or ortiz. Start with ortiz and if he doesnt work out, go with beltre.
I'm not sure why you think Ortiz won't decline and Drew will suddenly
when all evidence is to the contrary. They are the same age (actually, Drew is 2 days younger)
