The Yankees are taking advantage of the poor economy to buy up players for less than they might normally command (Randy Winn, Chan Ho Park). In 2002, Park was a starting pitcher who landed a contract for 5 years, $65 million – now he’ll be fighting for a relief role.

In 2002

Barry Bonds hit .370/.582/.799/1.381. An awful lot changes in 8 years.

Park wasn’t very good in the NL East, so I can’t imagine he’ll suddenly be ok in the AL East with another year on his arm, in that ballpark. It’s the Yankees so a 1-2m signing doesn’t even matter, but it’s a pretty nothing signing.

Very True

In fairness, Bonds could probably get a .400 OBP again in the NL, if MLB hadn’t blacklisted him.

It is a smart move

I am impressed at how Cashman has improved as a GM. His moves of the last 2 years really are logical and fit within a good plan. Having the $$ really helps, but we have seen that that is not sufficient (Minaya,Hendry…).

Agreed

He knew they needed depth and he got it for cheap. Its not a huge signing and he probably won’t make an impact on the team, but when the shit hits the fan, these are the type of signings that will help you make it back to the playoffs.

Yes

it is not like Park is gonna light the world on fire, but he has decent peripherals-his xFIP has been just around 4 the last 2 years, and he was a 3.49 FIP pitcher (was lucky with HRs). Will it make a big difference? No, but it is a smart depth move.

cashman

despite theos moves this off season, cashman has more or less matched us. that means we may be playing for wc gain. cas has been doing it longer – 13 years.

but, we only have to beat the yankmees 4 times as long as it’s in october.

wasn’t there a web sight that analyzed the 2009 season and predicted the red sox and the rays fighting for the east? with the yannees in 3rd?

if true, i don’t see it.

That was PECOTA

however it seems that PECOTA has this order fluctuating each time I look. PECOTA is usually the best predictor of team performance, but all of these things are not so predictable. However, I do feel the Yankees, Sox and Rays are the 3 best teams in baseball, and that any one of these teams can be out of the playoffs because they really are closer than you think. Injuries, performance and luck over the long season will tell the tale.

Sweet.

First WInn, now Park.

Better start preparing for 2011 guys. Yanks just wrapped up the division, home field advantage and a first round bye.

Well, luckily it's only 1-year deals.

So we just need to wait until 2011, when Park and Winn are out the door. Maybe then the Yankees will become mortal.

Of course, at that point the Yanks will sign Josh Beckett for 10 years, $250 million (with a no-trade contract, private jet and interpreter)…

In all seriousness, I’m still shocked that $man opted for Jaiver Vazquez / Park / Winn when he could have outbid the Sawx on Lackey and still traded for Vazquez. This stated concern over the luxury tax seems silly given the three person, $420 million stimulus package they signed last year (Sandwichia, Brunette, and Tex).

It really seems like they’re taking this whole budget thing pretty seriously. I also think between Burnett and Pettitte’s injury history/ extended workload last year they didn’t want to add another long term big money injury risk in Lackey. I could see them making a run at Lee next year if Pettitte retires and Javy bounces for free agency.

This isn't 2002 Brian!

And even if it were, Vazquez and Park would still suck.
