OTM Fantasy Baseball
I was playing in a Keeper League with other Germans, but the league isnt renewed for the 2010 season, cause we dont have enough players. Since I wanna play atleast one fantasy league in 2010 i thought i might find one here or better just play a league with OTM members only.
So first is there even enough interest to play a 10, 12 or maybe 16 Team league? If you are interested please post which format you would prefer: Roto, H2H, H2H scoring, Keeper, Dynasty or whatever is out there. Which platform: ESPN, CBS, Yahoo etc., that are the only ones i know there a prolly way more. Some are free some cost like 10-20 bucks per person. I'm prolly not the best person to organize the league since my fantasy baseball knowledge is limited, only played 2 years (1 year free Roto on ESPN where basically 4 ppl were active while 6 did nothing after the draft and 1 year CBS H2H scoring keeper league), but i enjoyed it alot. I guess there is still enough time to setup a league for 2010 if there is enough interest.

I guess I'd be interested
My only fantasy sports experience is a 20 team ESPN fantasy hockey league with other members of Japers’ Rink. I think it’s H2H format.

I'd be up for it
I think head to head is the way to go. I’ve done one on yahoo but I can’t say if that is any better or worse than any other formats.
Can't stand fantasy sports.
It takes away from my enjoyment of the game when I need to hope a player on a team I hate—or a team playing the Sox—does well just to help my fantasy squad.
I’m a Sox fan first, and I couldn’t live with the mental gymnastics fantasy players typically use.
Team affiliations often come into play for
It just becomes another factor in the pros and cons of a player, i.e. all things being equal, i take a Sox player or an angel must be better than the next option considerably.
You can look at it negatively and say it makes you root for a player you hate or you can look at it positively and say it gives an added rooting interest in other baseball teams you might not watch otherwise.
Yeah one would expect
that in this league Red Sox Players will be highly overrated and Yankee player will all be a bargain. ;)
But the rooting factor is not that bad in baseball as it may be in other sports. For example you have CC in your fantasy team and he pitches against the Sox you can still root for him to pitch a quality game so Mo can blow the save. ;)

Conflicting needs :)
it’s not as tough to root for a strong Zobrist performance (coupled with crap from the rest of the Rays) against the Sox when he’s on your fantasy team as it is to go into a day needing Youk or VMart to choke cuz they are on the roster against you :P and you need them to not generate ANY RBI or do anything to nudge the other guy’s team OBP up .003 for the week.
True that.

I'd be down
I always play a couple public leagues each year. That’s not to say I’m any good at it, I suck but as long as you can keep priorities straight it’s a great way to become more acquainted and appreciative of other players outside of Fenway. I usually play Yahoo either H2H or roto. I like roto a little better because it’s a season effort that count’s not weekly to weekly performances.

I've never liked fantasy baseball.
I can never separate good fantasy players from good real players.
Still, I might try it out in an OTM league.
USG
yeah especially in Roto
because SB are so huge in Roto guys like Ellsbury are real Studs there. He is a top 20 Player there infront of guys like Agon, Youk or Holliday while in real baseball he is more like a 3 WAR player while the other are 5+ WAR studs.
But even for unexperienced fantasy players the Rankings done by the sites are quite usefull.

Imagine you live in a world before advanced statistical metrics...
You love RBIs, Ws, and SBs. Defense not so much.

It’s ok to hate J.D. Drew? Maybe that’s the secret behind all the seemingly irrational hate…
I'm interested
I’ve played mostly ESPN H2H points
I'll put you through hell, but at the end of it all we'll be champions.
I've never really done fantasy.
I don’t tend to care too much about individual stats because I just like wins for Sox. But, for OTM, I might be willing to give it a shot.
Sure. Put me down.

Nice
Sofar 10 ppl are interested so we can fill atleast a 10 team league prolly more will be interested.
One thing i forgot to say. If you sign up for this please be active for the whole season, it only takes like 10-20 minutes a week to field a team. It kills the fun for the other 9+ guys especially in H2H when half your team is injured cause you lost interest by the end of may (most likely cause your team sucks). So if you are unsure you can be active for the whole season please say so upfront.
Sofar ESPN H2H points seems to prefered format, i will setup a league by the end of the week and then we can discuss a Draft Date.

It helps if there is some sort of prize for the winner to keep people playing.
Perhaps a OTM T-shirt?
I like 12-team leagues.
I see 10-team league teams, and they’re just kinda stupid sometimes.
8 is right out.

yeah i would prefer 12 too but we'll
there is nothing wrong with having more than one OTM league if like 24 or even more guys wanna join this, it will be much more fun than a random public league for sure.

I'd love to help
put it together if nobody’s claimed it or interested. I commish a couple of leagues for each sport year-round. Baseball is my favorite though. I’d just need a few opinions about categories. I usually stick to H2H. Let me know.
Immediately
I go first and draft Julio Lugo

I’ve done a bunch of the Yahoo leagues, and a couple ESPN. I’ve always wanted to get into a keeper league, but finding an opening is proving difficult…

Well, I offered to create a league.
Does anybody have any problem with that? I usually go through Yahoo, so I’d need Yahoo addresses from everyone who wants in. Plus some opinions on what categories we should play with and any other intangibles thtat may be of importance i.e. draft time and rules and all that business.
Do you want the email addresses here?
Or emailed to you?

I’ll set up the league as soon as I get 12 teams?
That ok with everyone?
The league is created
They had the option of 20 teams, but then someone would really have to get Julio Lugo and something about that doesn’t sit right with me. Join up!!!
First come first serve I suppose

Stats
Any reason to include those stats like – qulaity starts, picks, holds, etc……I like the idea of points but can we simplfy the list a bit to make our lives easier? Here is a list of stats that I think we could probably do away with and not miss a beat
Wild Pitches
Balks
Quality Starts
Picks
Sacrifices
Holds?
Might be others
Here are the stats so far for Hitting
Hitting (R, 1B, 2B, 3B, HR, RBI, SB, CS, BB, HBP, E, OFA)
R – 1 pt
1B – 1 pt
2B – 2 pt
3B – 3 pt
HR – 4 pt
RBI – 1 pt
BB – 1 pt
HBP – 1pt
SB – 2 pt
CS – (-1 pt)
E – (-1 pt)
OFA – 2 pt
I would recommend dropping the OFA and HBP but that’s my suggestion
This will drive the price of homerrun hitters pretty high since a solo homerrun is worth really 6 pts – same as say hitting 3 doubles and not driving anyone in.
the other stats dont really have much influence
i mean how many pick offs will someone have? like 3? so thats 3 points of say 600 for a season. So either way we can drop those but they dont really have much influence to the game anyway.
a Wild guy like Matsuzaka should be punished though so i like wild pitches punishment.
But you cant just kill QS cause lets take the best Fantasy Pitcher Lincecum he will have around 23 QS thats a 115 points over a season. of around 800 Points. The very best Pitcher should actually outscore the very best hitter cause of increased risk of injury. So the guys who manage to start 33+ Games with the stuff of lincecum should be the best players.
by German Red Sox Fan on Feb 20, 2010 8:26 PM EST up reply actions
Just did a point check
Using 2009 stats for Pedroia, Cano and Hill
Hill – 596
Pedroia – 567
Cano – 540
Actually
Since Innings are currently set at 3 pts per inning, a starter will already have 600 pts just for pitching 200 Innings
Lincecum
A quick Lincecum point check from 2009 – 804 pts
I see now how the hits and er take away from the IP points…..
jep and Pujols had 766 points
i think you could go 4 points a win and 4 points a Quality start, to even it out a bit. But the dropoff is bigger for pitchers, cause a hitter cant make minus while average pitchers get quite abit minus points. Ad to that the greater injury risk for pitchers and that they are not that consistent. For example Brandon Webb was a top 5 pitcher last year and made -7 points.
by German Red Sox Fan on Feb 21, 2010 6:00 AM EST up reply actions
I agree
Making SO a -0.5 might be easier. That would make Pujols a 740 pt. player. If you go 4 pts for W & QS that would make someone like Lincecum a 750/760 pt player.
Here would be my suggestion
Hitters: R(1), 1B(1), 2B(2), 3B(3), HR(4), RBI, BB(1), SB(2), CS(-1), SO(-0.5), E(-1)
Maybe consider a -2 for GIDPs if you want to include some more penalties for hitters
i like that
and also the -2 for GIDP is a good idea ihmo
by German Red Sox Fan on Feb 21, 2010 5:27 PM EST up reply actions
So stats as we have them
Hitters
R 1 pt
1B 1 pt
2B 2 pt
3B 3 pt
HR 4 pt
RBI 1 pt
BB 1 pt
SO (-0.5 pt)
SB 2 pt
CS (-1 pt)
E (-1 pt)
OFA 2 pt
Pitchers
IP 3 pt
H (-1 pt)
ER (-2 pt)
BB (-1)
SO 1 pt
WP (-1 pt)
BLK (-1 pt)
Win 5 pt
QS 5 pt
SV 6 pt
BSV (-3 pt)
Hold 3 pt
Pick 1 pt
Suggestions
- Wins, QS from 5 to 4
- Remove OFA (Does this give unfair fielding points advantage to outfielders?)
- ?? on Balks, WP and Picks (Personally I think these are nitpicky and could be lost)
I'll see what I can do
about the decimal stats. I don’t see why we couldnt make it happen.
3 Spots still open by the way
Should
Assists be added in general? And Outfield assists be raised? I like the idea of rewarding defensive statistics, but I’m finding it very difficult to find a realistic way of doing it. If assists were a point apiece, then OFA would have to be roughly 10pts, and 1st basemen and catchers would get screwed because they get putouts.
Suggestions?
It's really hard incorporating defense into Fantasy Baseball
I’m fine with just the slap on the wrist for the error and leaving it at that……
Works for me
Just wanted the general consensus
