Red Sox Lose Cesar Cabral, Daniel Turpen In Rule 5 Draft
The Red Sox' chief rivals are taking aim at the team's farm system, as Boston has lost Cesar Cabral to the Rays and Daniel Turpen to the Yankees in today's Rule 5 draft.
Cabral, 21, is a bit of an odd choice. While he saw tremendous success in Greenville last year, the numbers didn't really translate to Salem or winter ball. He's got a decent fastball, a good changeup, but as far as I can tell, no chance to stick with the Rays' 25-man roster.
Turpen, 24, came over to the Sox in the Ramon Ramirez deal and struggled through 19 innings in Portland. While Turpen seems to be closer to the majors, I again can't really see him sticking on a 25-man roster, much less the Yankees'.
The Red Sox passed on their opportunity to select a player.

Expected someone to take Turpen
surprised it’s the Yankees.
When was the last time the Sox actually took someone in the rule 5? Never seems to happen.
Miguel Gonzalez
Injured, playing in winter ball now. Looking pretty decent for a guy who’s been out so long.

I know
I would never have traded Daniel Turpen for Adrian Gonzalez. But we still ended up losing him anyway. Dammit MFY.

I'm familiar with the Rule 5 draft but never this rule
From Wikipedia
“To prevent excessive turnover in the minor league levels, each draftee costs $50,000. If the draftee does not stay on the selecting team’s 25-man (major league) roster all season, the player must be offered back to his original team at half-price. Organizations may also draft players from AA or lower to play for their AAA affiliates (for $12,000) and may draft players from A teams or lower to play for their AA affiliates (for $4,000).”
I’ve heard countless mentions in past years about the part not in bold, but what about the part in bold. Is that true or just Wikibs?
It's true
There is an AAA and AA part of the draft, though most teams seem to pass on them. Red Sox drafted nobody in any phase.

maybe it's his way of saying
