Red Sox and Padres discussing Adrian Gonzalez
According to Gordon Edes of ESPN.com, the Red Sox and Padres have been discussing a trade for much-heralded Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. I don't really feel the need to go too much into detail about Gonzalez here as there's an article I posted just a couple of days ago professing my baseball love for him.
I have been hoping the Sox would wait until he hits free agency to pull the trigger on him, but I'm optimistic about Edes' report that the talks only include Red Sox minor league players--so Ellsbury, Bard, Buchholz, and Lowrie would presumably be safe. I do have to admit this would get me incredibly psyched for next year. If the deal were Kelly, Rizzo, and Iglesias straight up, I think I'd do that in a heartbeat for a year of a superstar player signed cheap.

Did anyone else watch Kenan and Kel when they were younger?
Y’know how at the end, Kenan would come up with some insane plan and then run off and leave Kel shouting “Aw, here goes!”
Well
“Aw, here goes!”

yay!
that’s really the only thought going through my mind right now.
If they can get Gonzalez to sign an extension immediately, I'd be all for this
If Edes’s hypothetical ends up happening, I’d hope we go with Lowrie at short and Scutaro as utilityman. Other than that, though, his proposed lineup looks awfully nice, both offensively and defensively.
I gotta say
As much as I know we’d likely get killed long-term value in any Gonzalez trade thanks to the immediate extension that would be signed, I’m starting to weaken. I want to see him in a Red Sox uniform next year. I want to score 10 runs 50 times. I want an awesome lineup with the only weak link being at catcher.
But oh, my, the cost…

Gammons has the same story
Red Sox and Padres not “close” but talking Gonzalez. Boston trying to make it without impacting major league roster

Prospects only? If it’s Kelly, Rizzo and a lower level prospect (Reddick, Lavarnway), I’m fine.

I'd expect more.
Add Stolmy in there, maybe a Middlebrooks/Tejada/Navarro type?

I would prefer leaving Stolmy out of it
I would like to see at least one high-ceiling pitching prospect starting the season in AA

'Cause Weiland is a reliever
Raunaudo will start in A+ and apparently he’s less polished than I thought he would be and could spend most of the season in Salem.
Giving up one of the prospects you mentioned would be fine. I just want them to stay away from giving Lowrie!

Think he'll start in AA?
High-A was a bit of a struggle.

Yeah, pretty sure he'll be in AA
He’s got his curveball to work on and they weren’t shy of promoting guys with that particular pitch to work on (See, Doubront, Felix)

I think Kelly, Rizzo, Middlebrooks, and Stolmy?

If we offered Lowrie
They’d take him.
I hope we don’t offer him.

I agree.
They would definitely get aroused by a Lowrie or an Ellsbury.

Definitely
Especially Lowrie, with their hole at shortstop.
I really hope Theo won’t include Kelly over Bard. Losing Rizzo hurts, but AGonz would obviously be blocking him for the next 7 or so years anyway.

The Pen! Don't forget the pen!
otherwise yes. The beauty of Gonzalez vs. Beltre is that gives us a TON of money to spend on the pen this year.
I figure most extensions will include an immediate bump of some kind.

But AGonz will look great wearing an old English B on his head.

Adrian and Upton
If I was your math homework I'd be really hard and you'd be doing me on your desk.
I'm a 7 WAR player in bed.
I’ve done a bit of a 180 on a Gonzo trade. I would have been all for this 3 months ago. However, unless they are granted a 72 hour period to get an extension done, I would prefer to wait. Specifically, ink DLee to a one or two year deal. Pursue Gonzo as a free agent (slide DLee to DH if he’s signed beyond ’11). Use those prospects to get Upton as a Drew replacement.
those prospects won't get us Upton
Think 5 years of a 23-year old vs. 1 year of a 28 year old. Not equivalent. Upton would probably cost the same prospects as Gonzalez plus two of Ellsbury, Bard, Doubront, and Lowrie, plus another top prospect. Prohibitive cost.
I'm not advocating those prospects alone will get Upton
However, if you trade those prospects for Gonzo, the likelihood that you could put together a package for Upton is diminished. It still comes down to the equation of which is preferred:
DLee (or comparable) + the risk of (not) acquiring Gonzo as a free agent – draft pick
vs.
Gonzo – propsects – the risk of losing him to Free Agency + 2 draft picks.
I would prefer the first option but would be thrilled to have Gonzo in the 3 hole in ’11.
I mean, if we're being honest, I think that either way Gonzalez is on the Red Sox in 2011
he is just too perfect a hitter for Fenway. I think if he hits free agency, they won’t lose him in it, this is a situation where they will flex their financial muscle. So I’m not overly stressed about it. The only reason I’ve been down on a Gonzalez trade is if the prospect cost outweighs the year we get him very cheap. So it depends on the package.
Can we recycle this post so we can use it again in two months?

About his surgery
Wolf I saw in your post before that you thought the surgery was minor, but I had heard from a couple other places that it was more serious than people originally thought. Have you heard anything about that?
here's what I've heard
I don’t think full details have been released.
He got labrum cleanup surgery in mid-october. They weren’t going to know how serious it was until he was actually in surgery, but it wasn’t anything huge. Gonzalez’ agent said that the surgery usually takes about 4 month to fully recover from- so he’d be swinging again around the beginning of spring training. Gonzalez said that there is a chance he isn’t cleared to swing a bat until March. The doctors said the surgery went very well, but haven’t given a specific timetable that I have seen.
Is labrum surgery the type of surgery that saps power?
Or once you’re recovered from it, are you pretty much good to go?
Nick Cafardo is confirming this as well

NO WAY! If
the deal were Kelly, Rizzo, and Iglesias straight up. I would shoot myself. That is way too much to give up for a 1 year rental. Now if they could sign him to an extension, then I could stomach it.
I imagine an extension
Would be foremost on everyone’s minds from the moment the deal was consumated
There's no way this happens without an extension.

Pay for Beltre trade for Upton and wait for A-Gon to be a FA
Gonzalez said that there is a chance he isn’t cleared to swing a bat until March. The doctors said the surgery went very well, but haven’t given a specific timetable that I have seen.
He might start swinging a bat in March? OMG, what if he does not?
I agree with Ben that without the extension it would be insanity.
As much as I thik A-Gon is a great addition here are my concerns:
Hmmm ,1 year of A-Gon or 5 of Upton…gee that is tough esp. since there is a quality 3B on the FA market, an Allstar 1B already on the team and a huge need for an OF since Cameron and Drew will not be in a Sox uniform next season.
"Man that ball got outta here in a hurry, you know anything that travels that far oughta have a damn stewardess on it, don't you think?" - Crash Davis
it's not "he might start swinging a bat in march"
it’s “at the very latest he will be swinging in march.” There IS a difference.
The Upton vs. AGonz is not a discussion. Upton will not get traded this year. Or next year. It’s because obviously his value is ridiculous and there is no way Towers will do it unless he is getting absurd value for the player he is giving up. It just won’t happen. Whereas Agon can be had with just prospects, Upton will cost more prospects than that PLUS a significant amount of players from the major league roster.
