Edes: Sox sign Wheeler
It's a 1 year deal with a club option for a second year. Let's just hope that Francona never make him face a left handed hitter.

Ok, saves are a deeply flawed stat, but...
With Wheeler, Jenks and Papelbutt, we have 403 career saves. Which is pretty astonishing, considering none of them are our closer of the future.
It’s these types of depth moves that made the last 2 seasons so maddening to me: you make these moves when you’re trying to win a championship. Most of the moves we made in the last 2 seasons just seemed so pointless and unclear. Now, we’re doing what we did in ’04, building in deep redundancies to bolster an already incredibly talented core.
PLEASE let it be April. I friggin’ love this team as constructed.
And yet
we still have the blazers to tide us over. I’m counting down the days ’til the 15th. Front row, baby.
Awesome! I will be in the press box for that game.

Great signing
Fly ball tendencies are a concern but he looks pretty good as a 6th/7th inning arm in this revised pen. They just need to settle on a lefty. I would like Hill to get the first shot, Miller to work in AAA for a few months with Doubront as the fall back option.
Jenks, Wheeler, Bard, Papelbon...
Not too shabby. And it DiNardo and Miller don’t turn out to be anything good, then expect Theo & Co. to make a move sometime during ST or early in the season.
Plus we can’t forget about Durbront and possibly even Bowden.

No to him in long relief
I think he’s fine at most for 2 innings. He’s shown he sucks at long relief.

Ah yeah
Can’t forget him; forgot he had TJ surgery early enough to be back in time for this season. I still can’t get over his “cold as ice” performance against the Yanks.

I think he's gotta get a chance to start AAA for most of the year
just to see where he’s at post surgery.
If I ever see him face someone like Cano in Yankee Stadium I will cry
Tears of sadness.
Other than that, I’m pretty okay with this.

Tito might do it...
Just because he’s such a player’s manager..

One year 3M, plus a vesting option for a second year at 3 or 3.25M if he appears in 65 or 75 games respectively
and likely more often than not, respectably.
Don't know how anyone can be mad at this signing.
1 year deal with option.
Last year this kind of signing would have been one of our primary signings, now it is strickly a depth signing.
Needless to say
I have seen a lot of Wheeler. No question he has his uses. It is a good signing.
I used to hate seeing him come in a game though. Few managers are as bought into Sabermatics and matchups as Maddon, and if Wheeler was coming in you could be sure it was only for a batter or two. Maddon goes well beyond lefty/righty in his thinking. I have seen Wheeler pulled because Maddon didn’t like the matchup even though the next hitter was right handed.
His walk numbers are a bit misleading: he had a fair number of intentional walks.
