In this series of fanposts I'll look at each player on the Red Sox 40-man roster alphabetically over the next 40 days.
Albers, Matt (Pitcher, Throws: R, Bats: L, #: Unassigned)
Age (on 4/1/11): 28
Size: 6'0" 205 lbs
Acquired: Signed as a FA, 2010
Comments: Albers has thrown 317 1/3 major league innings in stints with both Houston and Baltimore. He was part of the trade that brought Miguel Tejada from Baltimor to Houston. He boasts a career ERA of 5.11 and has never shown the promise that he had as a prospect in the Astros' system. Albers is on the roster with a non-guaranteed ML contract, so he must show that he can help the pen during spring training or risk being cut. He does not have particularly good stuff but mixes a 92-93 moh fastball with an ok cutter and a slider. He started throwing more of his slider last year at an 11% clip, but its velocity at 85 mph is still too close to his fastball to offset good hitters and it doesn't have great break on it (2.8" horizontal movement compared to the ridiculous 8" that Bard posted last year).
Analysis: Albers looks like AAA bullpen filler unless he surprises the Sox. Look for him to be let go during spring training and then possibly signed to a minor league deal for depth.
