Update On Free Agent Relievers
While the Red Sox main focus remains to be centered around the bullpen, the Yankees, Rays, Blue Jays, White Sox, Orioles and Cubs appear to have shifted their focus to adding relievers as well. Here are a few updates from the reliever market:
- The Tampa Bay Rays and free agent reliever Joel Peralta agreed to a 1-year, $900K contract according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney.
- The Rays are also targeting former White Sox closer Bobby Jenks, as they appear to be the front runner and close to signing him says Mark J. Miller of Yahoo! Sports.
- The Yankees are "close to agreeing" with former Mets left-hander Pedro Feliciano tweets Bob Klapish of the Bergen Report.
- The Blue Jays appear to have their sights set on free-agent reliever Octavio Dotel says Jon Paul Morsi of Foxsports.com.
- The Cubs and reliever Kerry Wood are expected to finalize a contract today reports David Kaplan of Chicago Now.
- Although they were unable to close a deal with him yesterday, the Orioles remain the favorite to sign Blue Jays reliever Kevin Gregg says Dan Connoly of the Baltimore Sun.
With all of these names now likely off the board, the Red Sox targets get thinner and thinner by the minute. While they are still in discussions with Dan Wheeler, they still seem likely to add another reliever, preferably a left-handed one. They also remain very interested in former Twins reliever Brian Fuentes as their prime lefty target.
The Red Sox could also be interested in Mariners reliever David Aardsma, according to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe. Aardsma pitched for the Red Sox in 2008, and did put up an impressive 3.45 ERA for the Mariners in 2010 serving as the team's closer.
The Red Sox have already added former Oriole Matt Albers to fill a presumable mop-up role in the bullpen and Lenny DiNardo, who will likely give AAA Pawtucket some extra depth.
There is still a lot of work the Sox need to do on their bullpen and little time to do it.

Dear Theo,
Please don’t sign any multiyear deals. Thanks.
Awww
Heyman

doubt he gets it though
he made 7.5M last year and the White Sox nontendered him because they didnt wanna pay him more for 1 year

Honestly? I think Jenks will end up with the Rays and Soriano with the MFY
I think he’ll sign 1 year deal to recoup his value: He reminds of Troy Percival 3 years ago when he chose to sign with the Rays instead of the MFY, for less money because they offered him the chance to close.

Why the Angels are not going after Soriano with a pasion
is just beyond me. Right now their closer is Fernando Rodney…
Why waste money on a 1-inning pitcher when you have other problems
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Supply and demand, eh?
Even RPs get to be roaring mice with all those needy and wealthy teams…
Aardsma sure seems to have done better
in SEA than he was doing with us.
49 IP with 33 hits? I’ll take it.
Question is, is that because he’s figured something out, or because that park in SEA covers all pitcher’s sins?
Is there anything Aardsma did last year
That Kevin Gregg also didn’t do? Some numbers are very similar

He's a flyball pitcher playing in a division with spacious OF: Safeco, Colesium, LAA
2 of his 3 OFers (Suzuki and Gutierrez) are GG: It helps.

Last year:
FIP
At home: 3.16
Away: 6.15
his K:BB rate was actually better away, it was the .26 HR/9 at home compared to 2.45 HR/9 away that killed him.
I dunno, year to year he has some VERY odd fluctuations in his peripherals and results. Confuses me a little. I don’t trust him at all.
Did you looked at his pitch selection?
Fastball: 77.3% (!!!!!)
Slider: 11.2%
Splitter: 11.5%
Papelbon:
Fastball: 69.5%
Slider: 9.3%
Splitter: 21.2%
He’s even more predictable than Papelbon! I know I’ll hate him…Well I HATE HIM ALREADY!

At the moment,
I think you have to be on board for anyone who might be better than Atchison, Bowden or Rich Hill, right?

Agreed
I see Theo waiting until everyone who wants to overpay for relievers does. He then takes what is left over, signs them for cheap and short term and sees what ones stick.
I don't disagree with your assessment...
… but any bullpen strategy with the word “stick” in it is chillingly reminiscent of last year’s rummage sale collection.

I know
but relievers have such small sample sizes that who really knows what you will get next year from them. I don’t think it is worth spending alot of money/years on them.
I think though if Theo really felt good about a particular reliever though he will jump on him quickly.
OT: Russell Martin to have minor knee surgery, from Joel Sherman
Apparently, it’s not considered serious, but it makes me feel better about not signing him.

Jenks ERA, FIP and xFIP over the years

Consistency problems?

I know this is "elementary" stuff around here
But can someone explain the difference between FIP and xFIP? Thanks.
xFIP adjusts for ballpark and league

Really?
I thought xFIP replaces HR rate with a standard HR/FB rate.

by Frederick0220 on Dec 16, 2010 3:29 PM EST up reply actions
yes, though that is effectively a park adjustment
Expected Fielding Independent Pitching. This is an experimental stat that adjusts FIP and “normalizes” the home run component. Research has shown that home runs allowed are pretty much a function of flyballs allowed and home park, so xFIP is based on the average number of home runs allowed per outfield fly. Theoretically, this should be a better predicter of a pitcher’s future ERA.
Park and luck

So does the standard HR/FB rate change year-to-year...
Based on league results for the last season? Or is it a permanent constant, like pi? Thanks for the explanation(s) guys. Not all of us have been following advanced metrics for long, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to learn them!

has there been any confirmation that crawford will play
short stop in addition to left field, at the same time? short left fielder? or long short stop?
now that crawford plays for the sox – tek’ defense against base stealing should significantly improve – being that crawford won’t be stealing 40 bases on him.
