I'm confused
unless for some crazy reason he wants to move to the bullpen?
at 7.5 million a year?
You better sign Downs for that money.

even worst: He's actually making 10.5 millions a year
If they trade for him, that means Dice-K is on the move.

Cot's has him at 8.5
With an $8m luxury tax hit

Hmmm
On the payroll obligations spreadsheet it’s 10.5

I don't understand this move for a 6th starter.
He’s not better than Dice-K, so spot starts is all he’ll get and we already had Wakefield for that role.
No deal

God I hope not
Why spend 8.5 million (less whatever the Phils would pay) for the next 2 years for a sixth starter? If they wouldn’t give good money to Downs why give it to Blanton? Even if it did help the Phillies, that doesn’t help the bullpen or catcher situation.

I think the idea behind the helping Philly concept was
we’ll take him and his money off your hands now so that you can agree to Lee’s deal, then we flip him or Dice-K for relief help. So it would help the pen in the long run. In any case, that was all pure speculation.
Plus, signing Downs forfeits the pick.
And we know how much Theo loves his picks…
