They need to add a pitcher to bolster that rotation...
I hear that Joe Blanton is suddenly available,

They need Pettitte to sign first
And stay healthy/not decline.
Remember all that lefty lineup worrying? With just Sabathia/Pettitte there, it’s a lot less frightening.

At the moment, it’s Sabathia, Hughes, Burnett, Mystique and Aura…

I'm illin'... again
this is just not a good year for me. Back injury, cancer scare, bronchitis-turned-pneumonia, and now what feels like strep throat.

Wheatgrass, FTW.
My mother’s been juicing since she was on chemotherapy (from December to April) and she’s been drinking it since. It certainly helped to keep chemo’s side effects to a minimum and it certainly helped to keep her cancer count down (granted the chemo helped too).
I’ll keep the yapping to a minimum but feel free to email me.

Good to know
I have a friend (a MFY fan, but nice to have around nonetheless) who is just starting chemo. Not sure if she’s on the wheatgrass, , but if you send something to TLD, can you cc me at blogtard-at-yahoo-dot-ca (not com)?

I didn't have cancer
Over the summer I had a malformation on my lymph nodes (sort of the same that Westy had on his brain stem) and my doctor thought it might have been a tumor. The offending bit has been removed and I’m showing no ill effects, except for the whole now I’ve been sick twice more since then thing.
I know I mentioned it on here before, it was the first time any of y’all started paying me any mind.

Heyman suggests the Yankees will spend aggressively on relievers if they don’t sign Lee.
I dont like that. We need relievers badly. We allready let Downs slip.

As I stated elsewhere in these electronic pages, our main areas of concern were:
- bullpen
- catcher
- third base
Aside from sliding our first baseman over to third, we haven’t addressed these yet, and it makes me nervous.

our 1b was a 3b
so check off that off your list. and catcher where as i agree would like better options the ones we got with the team we have can get the job done. our number 1 concern is still the bullpen but so it is for 90 percent of the league.
The fact that 90% of the league needs bullpen relief
is what makes it so concerning. It’s not like we can cherry-pick the pieces we want. Everyone needs help, so if we’re gonna get bullpen relief, it’s likely gonna cost.
Of course, we could always do the "throw shit at the wall and see what sticks" method we tried last yr

building a bullpen is the hardest thing in baseball
2 years ago sox had the best bullpen in baseball, last year it was the worst in baseball with pretty much the same players. but our starters our offense and bard and papelbon can cover a lot of bullpen issues if the team stays healthy. the bullpen didnt sink our ship last injuries did cause we couldnt make up for our major fault.

If we buy enough releivers
We can pencil 9 of them into the 4th spot in the rotation.
Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

He's not better than a healthy Dice-K.
Puzzling. And we still have Wakefield for a 6th starter out of the pen.
With Lee in Phillie
I bet CC will opt out next year, the yanks will easily pay him more.

Even If the Yanks Signed Lee...
I’d still take the BoSox roster over the Yanks. Our pitching is still one of the top rotations in the Majors. If Beckett comes back healthy and in pre-injury form, Beantown is looking at one of the top 4 rotations.
Not to mention how dynamic our batting order is.

I LOVED the fact that Cliff Lee called the Rangers to inform them of his decision and made his agent make the call to Cashman

I feel bad for the Rangers
since they seem to have done everything they could, and the Phillies rotation is wake-in-the-night terrifying now, but damn it’s nice that the Yankees haven’t gotten anything they’ve wanted. And so their only choice is to trade the farm for Greinke.
Please Yankees, don’t trade for Greinke. The kid is going to be destroyed by NYC, and he’s far too nice a guy to go through this.

I can't believe it
I was absolutely certain the Yankees would sign Cliff Lee. I can’t believe he would give up a huge fortune to sign with the Phillies. God bless him, but giving up $20 – $30 million by some reports, the difference alone is an absolue fortune. I guess Lee is now the ultimate example of a player who took less to go to a place/situation he liked better. I’m guessing he didn’t want to be “The Man” in NY, and the AL.
I cannot believe he did not go to ny

Using 48 wins as something approximating replacement level, that would make the Phillies an expected 98 win team in 2011.
….
With Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford, I’d imagine the 2011 Red Sox will end up projecting at a very similar level to Philadelphia. Depending on what the Yankees do, they also will likely be in that range.

I know that I already got my Red Sox vs. Phillies World Series invitation in the mail, and I don’t mean to cramp those plans, but I really don’t think that the Yankees ever had any real interest in Crawford or Werth.
They were definitely in on Lee, but personally, I’ve been against his signing from the start. (Lying Yankee fan is just saying that now!! Proof 1 and Proof 2).
Is it possible that this is a “bridge year” per se for the Yankees? Sure. Did you guys bring your checkbooks and cash in on some great players? Yes. But, do the Yankees need Lee, Werth, or Crawford to be in the playoffs and have a shot at the championship? Not really.
Is posing questions and then answering them a silly way to make your point? Most definitely.

The problem for a bridge year
is that it’s not really bridging towards anything. All of the Yankee’s superstars are only getting older, and having a roster with aging Jeter/Arod/Sabathia/Tex on huge contracts is not going to be fun in 2-3 years. The Yankees have some really good high-end prospects, but the pitching ones probably won’t be seriously contributing in 2012, which at best will be their first year in the majors. From what I’ve seen, free agents next year aren’t anything special.
the yanks are def good enough to make playoffs
with the team it has right now problem is once in the playoffs prepare for a early exit esp if u dont meet the twins in round 1. nowadays u need atleast 2 frontline starters to win in playoffs and the yanks only have 1. now with drug testing baseball is changing less power and more pitching and speed and obp. the yanks will win a lot of regular season games but come postseason i would be a little worried if the rotation is the same as it is today.
Oh, are you kidding me??
Martin goes for $4million base salary

According to some "MLB Sources"
The Red Sox had concerns with his hip and apparently never offered more than a minor league deal with incentives. Haven’t found much details on that other than a brief mentioning on NECN. Dodgers supposedly offered a higher base salary at $4.2 with $1.5 in incentives earlier this month, but maybe the Yanks had a higher incentive package.

I don’t mean to be “that guy” that comments after the fact about his feelings, but i’d say about 35% of us Yankees fans are happy Lee is not a Yankee. Think about it, who would want to pay Lee $20 million+ over the last three years of his contract each year? Sure, we are upset that our rotation is as good as the Springfield Isotopes’, but I’m happy the Yankees aren’t on the hook for his contract at the end of the contract. If the Yankees could have gotten 4-5 years instead of the 7 they were offering, then I would be upset. To be honest I think Red Sox fans should have wanted Lee to sign with the Yankees if it was a 6+years offer considering their rotation would be a mess in the 5th year.
To reduce that rant into a quick summary, not all Yankees fans wanted Lee, including me. Lee was too expensive over too many years, and I’d rather see them trade for a starter, or steal all of the Red Sox’ reliever candidates.

Whether you hated the contract or not..
The MFYs needed Lee. As a combo for his control, and the other reason so they don’t have to face him
They need about three decent pitchers if they want to win the division or win the wild card, and make a run in the playoffs. Right now the MFY have one good pitcher and that is Sabathia with Hughes as either good or questionable, and the rest of the rotation sans Pettitte, if he signs or not, pretty much semi disaster. Sabathia’s numbers are a bit misleading, he is good, he is a workhorse, but they need two other pitchers to have a good rotation. In many ways Sabathia’s type of pitching is more of a no. 2 workhorse than an strikeout ace.
Also I know you two good prospects, but what else can you used to trade for? It seems that the only way for the MFY to get good pitching is to buy it on the open market, or draft well.
As much as the Sox are giddy about Crawford and Gonzalez, (I am about Gonzalez) it is still doesn’t address the big problem with the Sox versus the MFYs and the Rays last year, middle relief.
Actually one Red Sox candidate the MFY should had kept, even though he is a closer, is Wood.
Well to go about each part.
the other reason so they don’t have to face him
They won’t have to face him unless they make the World Series, or in interleague

I think Sabathia worked fine as a workhouse #1 starter in the 2009 postseason and regular season, don’t you? He isn’t a problem at all as a #1. The Yankees could use a solid #2, yes, but Yankees fans including me expect Hughes to step up. Now, let’s say Hughes becomes a solid #3. Burnett is a solid #4 (unless he tanks like this year) and if he struggles he’s a good #5. The Yankees can easily survive up until the trade deadline with the current rotation IF (and this is a big if) Pettitte comes back. A rotation of Sabathia-Pettitte-Hughes-Burnett-Nova can get them to the trade deadline as either wild card/division winner. Whether they are now, great pitchers always seem to become available at the deadline, and if the Yankees see the need they will go for it, with more intensity than last deadline. Then they would have their rotation set for playoffs, if they make it.
Also I know you two good prospects, but what else can you used to trade for? It seems that the only way for the MFY to get good pitching is to buy it on the open market, or draft well.
Are you saying the Yankees don’t have good prospects to trade? If so, that is untrue. They could easily trade one of the killer B’s (Betances, Banuelos, Brackman) or one of their catching prospects (Montero, who I wouldn’t want traded, Romine, or Sanchez.
As much as the Sox are giddy about Crawford and Gonzalez, (I am about Gonzalez) it is still doesn’t address the big problem with the Sox versus the MFYs and the Rays last year, middle relief.
Thanks to the lack of the Cliff Lee signing the Yankees can spend all that money on relief help and bench help, which they plan on doing. Depth in all positions except for SP>Cliff Lee in my opinion. This is assuming they eventually get a #2 or #3 starter (or even a #1) to replace him.
Actually one Red Sox candidate the MFY should had kept, even though he is a closer, is Wood.
Yankees are still in on Wood, who is looking for 2 years $12 million.
