Yankees Lose Lee, Philly Agrees With Ace
Via MLB.com. The Phillies emerge from nowhere to sign Lee. Now what for the Yankees? Is this the single greatest off-season in Red Sox history?

Lone Star Ball (TX Rangers) is going nuts. Not Pinstripe Alley though.
Pinstripe Alley (MFY) seems to be taking it in stride (“oh well, we’ll just buy some others instead” kind of attitude).
LSB has 5 times the comments as PA.
Most of PA is saying,“But we offered him more money. How could he not take more money AND have the privilege of playing for the NYY?”
LSB seems to be organizing lynching parties. I hope Phil doesn’t play at TX next year – for Lee’s sake.

Need to address the
bullpen, and still need Martin if you want to call this the best postseason in baseball history.
To ask another question: how long has it been since the Yankees had a worse postseason?
If Pettitte doesn’t come back and they lose out on Martin, this off-season has been a disaster for them.
I would be happier if the Sox got some bullpen help...
however getting Gonzalez was a super sweet move. That made the post season a huge plus. We are getting a guy who hits well at Petco, at the prime of his career.. That is itself a very smart move.
The Sox can’t win by hitting alone. We also got to stop the bleeding from the 7th inning onward.
I would like the Sox to see their team not built to compete against the MFYs but other teams like Rangers, Twinkies and A’s, who have their strengths and weaknesses.
My favorite post
at Pinstripe Alley:
“I’m scared now:

Yankees looking at 3rd?
And that may be generous with their awful rotation and ’pen. What do they have behind Sabathia? And what do they have in the ’pen besides Rivera? If the Sox sign Wood away from them this will be the best offseason ever!
I don't know
Tampa has taken a BIG step back. And toronto has good pitching but we’ll have to see if their offense produces enough
I think it's a solid BOS - NYY run for 1-2, although it will help us a lot if Pettitte retires or goes elsewhere.
TB is retooling and takes a big step back for now.
TOR has bolstered their pitching, but probably isn’t good enough to catch us.
BAL was the best team in our division after Showalter became manager. i wouldn’t be surprised if they took 3rd place.
The only thing that would make this better is if Texas trades for Greinke
Think about it – the original assumption was that whoever lost the Lee sweepstakes (between NYY and TEX) would trade for Greinke. Now they BOTH lost… and Texas has a much, much deeper minor league system to draw from for a trade. Especially since the Royals aren’t looking for a catcher (IIRC), so Montero won’t be quite as enticing to them as he might be to other teams.
Seriously, if the Yankees are forced to go into 2011 with a rotation of Sabathia, Hughes, Burnett, and Nova, I may die of laughter before the season even starts.
If the MFY get some decent starts from Hughes, Pettitte
along with Sabathia have a good year, they should do okay, combine with their lineup. It may not be pretty, but they are going to be an easy opponent to defeat..
If Hughes is having a tough time and Pettitte is not doing well, or are injured, they are big, big trouble.
I pretty much have written off Burnett as a loss for 2011.
And I love how the yankees second best option
is Carl Pavano
i wonderif they can do it
I would think the Royals are jumping because they should be able to get more for Greinke now, either from the Rangers, yankees or even Angels if they think now they can grab Greinke and take 1st back from Texas

The Red Sox might have a higher payroll than the Yankees this year...
If nobody is willing to take their money…
*Sidenote, I know they already have us covered with existing contracts… It’s just a joke…

BREAKING NEWS
The New York Yankees have signed C Russell Martin to a 2 year, 80 million dollar deal. When asked about the reason behind such a move, Yankees GM Brian Cashman grinned sheepishly and said “Well, we had to do SOMETHING.”
In an abandoned warehouse in Philadelphia, away from the cameras, Ruben Amaro suddenly collapses.
A closer look reveals that there are strings dangling from Amaro’s wrists, and a stick crudely fastened to his chin to control his mouth.
From above, a shadowy figure chuckles slowly.
“Everything is going according to plan,” murmurs Epstein, as he delicately sets the control bars for the marionette aside.

In 1979, he hit his first career home run...four years before his birth. He once swung at a pitch and missed, just to see how it felt. He is the only player in history to record more hits than plate appearances. He is, the most talented man in baseball.

Not to get ahead of myself but...
The Phillies now have Cliff Lee and “Doc” Halladay at the top of their rotation. Kind of scary in late October. Should AL teams be worried come Series time?
by Fenway302 on Dec 14, 2010 1:33 AM EST via mobile reply actions
Yes and No
They’re really really REALLY good pitchers, but they did have bad games last October. They can be beaten, we’re fortunate in that we have a good rotation to match and what’s shaping up to be a really solid lineup.
Oh and the “back” of the rotation is Oswalt and former WS MVP Cole Hamels. Just sayin…
by Fenway302 on Dec 14, 2010 1:35 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
They have to:
a. get there
b. stay healthy
by irish_celtic_fan on Dec 14, 2010 1:36 AM EST up reply actions
Worried, sure.
But ultimately it’s still a short series, and that means there’s always a pretty significant chance at an upset. Remember that the Phillies already had Halladay, Oswalt, and Hamels this year, and had a stronger lineup than they probably will have in 2011. And they still lost the NLCS to an offense that rated just above mediocre during the regular season.
Long story short
Any team that makes it to the WS is going to be very good.

As the saying goes
That’s why you play the games.
One at a time and always at 110%*

Let me just say,
I’m going to be rooting for every team besides the Phillies if both of us are in the playoffs.
One thing I do not want to do is face Halladay-Lee-Hamels-Oswalt-Halladay-Lee-Hamels in a 7-game series. And with a solid offense behind them. I love this team so far and our offense, but I’m hoping someone else is going to beat that for us.
Honestly, the Phillies offense isn't that impressive.
Utley and Ruiz are the only guys who are particularly good for their position that I can think of.
Ruiz – Great
Howard – Average (Don’t be fooled by the name/star power. .276/.353/.505 is not impressive from a first baseman. It’s Victor Martinez)
Utley – Fantastic
Rollins – Below average (Enjoy that .320 OBP out of the leadoff spot, Manuel)
Polanco – Below average
Ibanez – Decent
Victorino – Decent
Brown – Hasn’t proven self in the bigs yet.
Compared to us? We’ve got, I’d argue, Youk, Pedroia, and Gonzalez all in the Great range, Crawford good, and Drew/Cameron/Lowrie/Ellsbury all bouncing around decent-good depending on how they’re utilized. The only position the Sox are decidedly below average at offensively is Catcher.

Ryan Howard- don't be fooled by 2010
give me a break he was banged up last season his career is SLG is .572 andhe has 253 HR in 5 1/2 seasons with 748 RBI. He is above average hitting 1B

besides that i agree except Polanco
he is a good vet hitter, always around .300 or better and they only need to score 3 runs per game to win now

Payroll
Am I crazy, or did we just drop to third?
I know it’s hardly that important, but in the wake of our massive signings, this warms my heart..
Looks like Philly will land somewhere between $160 and $175 before all is said and done. At least until Dayton Moore trades Moustakas for Blanton and Ibanez.
Yeah, just about.

I'm now seeing $120 Million
After hearing $100 million. Also a vesting option for a 6th year.
Go Sox
Wow cant understand why he would go back
That team traded him for almost nothing and now he is going back for 50M less? But what do i care right? Great that he is in the NL and not a Yankee.

I guess Lee liked playing there...
He seemed to like playing there in 2009, and he pitched alright at First Citizen’s ballpark. If he wanted some HOF stats, he should had gone back to Seattle, in which he pitched pretty well.
However, I am glad we don’t have to see him in every series against the MFY, and not bite our fingernails as we see a Sept playoff race with Lee on the mound for the MFYs.
The two teams that are truly the big losers in this signing: the Braves and the Mets. The Rangers are in third, because their team doesn’t get better..
I would probably say the Phillies are of course the big winners, while the Sox and the Angels are tied in second place, because their seasons got alot easier.
For me the biggest losers are the MFY
their rotation looks aweful right now CC, Hughes, AJ +Nova + Mitre?
All the time Lee took the Yankees lost out on all big Free Agents. They could have signed Crawford and traded Gardner for an arm. That option is gone. So they prolly have to sign Martin and trade Montero for Greinke. I also guess they price just went up for all thos quality relievers.
by German Red Sox Fan on Dec 14, 2010 4:10 AM EST up reply actions
I am hedging that Pettite will be coming back.
So it isn’t a complete disaster. As I wrote if they can get three starting pitchers with some okay stats, they do okay, and be in contention. I don’t consider the MFY as the big losers in the Lee Sweepstakes because at least they don’t have to face him.
If Sabathia is having a tough time, then the MFY have some big problems, and they aren’t going to worry about the Sox, they got to worry about Toronto and the Wild Card, because the Sox will be on a different level.
It's not like Pettitte is good.
I’m sure his stats last year were total luck. He’s pretty much a left handed AJ Burnett.
Were you being sarcastic?
Pettitte has been a really good pitcher for 16 years. I’m not saying he’s going to light the world on fire next year but he is no AJ Burnett.
Look at their stats dude
They’re pretty much the same, except Burnett has more K’s and BB’s
They traded him because they didn't like their chances of signing him.
Then he signed with them.

They just have a very dumb FO ihmo.
They traded him to replenish the farm after they traded for Halladay. I dont trade one of the very best pitchers in the game for 3 soso prospects when I’m one of the favorites to win the NL. If I were Lee i would have been pissed and taken that personally.
They are obviously lucky to have maybe the 2 best pitchers in the game on their team and only pay them 20M each, thats quite a bargain these days.

Yes
Theo’s shock and awe coupled with the MFYs failure makes a meeting with Philly in the WS look nearly inevitable. What a great offseason. Can we trade ells for a healthy season?

Great respect for Lee
Who took less money to be where he wanted. I mean, in the end, isn’t that what we say never happens?
well he either took less money to pitch where he wants
Or has a lot of faith in his health and pitching ability for the future:
Philly offered $120 million/5 with a vesting option that could bring it up to $147.5/6 years
New York offered $148 million guaranteed, but over 7 years.
The Rangers offered $138 million over 6 years, with a vesting option that could bring it up to $161m/7 years
so he DID take the contract with the highest AAV. We can deduce that he either likes playing in Philly much more than anywhere else or has enough faith in his health that he’ll be able to make his option vest.
One MAJOR Thing I Think We're Overlooking...
Apparently Philly has an excellent children’s hospital (particularly for cancer) and Lee’s son had leukemia (now in remission) and no doubt this played a role:
US News Hospital Ranking for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
(St. Jude’s in Memphis is #1 and the Children’s Hospital Boston is #3 in case one is wondering).
I don’t know, but if I were him, that would weigh heavily.
