Red Sox Fall and Winter League Update -- 11/5/10
A bit late on the update this week, but oh well.
Arizona Fall League
Jose Iglesias: 1-7 -- .268/.295/.268
-Remember when Iglesias was actually looking pretty decent when this year first started?
Ryan Lavarnway: 3-15, 5 BB, 3 K -- .264/.412/.358
-Lavarnway's power shortage might be more alarming were there any questions that he's loaded with it.
Juan Carlos Linares: 7-17, 2 2B, SB -- .400/.438/.644
-What, no homers? If nothing else, Linares is putting himself in position to possibly be next year's Daniel Nava. Except that he's a really good outfielder too.
Seth Garrison: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 HR, 0 BB, 1 K -- 4.15 ERA, 10:5 K:BB, 0.27 GO:AO
Eammon Portice: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K -- 8.53 ERA, 6:0 K:BB, 0.67 GO:AO
Jason Rice: 2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K -- 2.25 ERA, 8:2 K:BB, 0.40 GO:AO
Daniel Turpen: 2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K -- 9.45 ERA, 8:4 K:BB, 1.00 GO:AO
-Wow, a much, much better showing from Turpen this week. Still doesn't undo a season of mediocrity, but nice to see.
Colombian Winter League
Reynaldo Rodriguez: 4-12, HR, K -- .342/.342/.737
Dominican Winter League
Yamaico Navarro: 5-16, HR, 5 BB, 2 K -- .342/.444/.553
-Just remember, Dustin Pedroia was horrible the first time he played in the majors too. Just saying.
Josh Reddick: 1-16, BB, 4 K--.216/.326/.243
-Nothing good comes of Reddick striking out.
Oscar Tejeda: 1-4, K -- .273/.304/.273
Robert Coello: 3.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 2 K -- 3.55 ERA, 9:7 K:BB, 0.63 GO:AO
-You get the feeling that Coello's teetering on the edge of disaster some times.
Kris Johnson: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K -- 2.00 ERA, 4:3 K:BB, 2.29 GO:AO
Mexican Pacific League
Miguel Gonzalez: 11.2 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 HR, 4 BB, 11 K -- 2.91 ERA, 15:5 K:BB, 1.42 GO:AO
Sydney Major League
Moko Moanaroa: 2-5, 2B -- .500/.500/.625
Boss Moanaroa: 4-6, K, E -- .333/.400/.333
-Quite a bit of offense in a 20-1 win...
Venezuelan Winter League
Armando Zerpa: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 HR, 1 BB, 1 K -- 3.86 ERA, 5:1 K:BB, 7.00 GO:AO

I’m happy enough with Lavarnway showing patience at the plate. Like you said, we know the power is there, he doesn’t need everyone else in Arizona feeling inadequate.

Iglesias better be able to turn a double play with no one on base.
Because if his offensive numbers don’t stop being offensive, he’s going to make us pine for the days when ’[Empty] was hitting eighth in the lineup.

Huge improvement for Daniel Turpen in the AFL.
Would love to this continue. In 3 games of relief (3.2 IN, 0BB, 5 SO, 1H) none of the 5SO were called. All five were swinging SO and no walks is great to see. Unfortunately, non these 3 games had pitch f/x available to get the pitch type or speed but it is a huge improvement from his first 3 games in the AFL when he struggled badly.
This is his first time working with pitching coach, Kevin Walker. Walker coaches the Lowell Spinners in the NY-Penn League in the summer and the Javelinas in the AFL. He spent 9 years with SD as a player and then a year each with SF, CWS, and the Rockies before becoming a pitching coach in the Red Sox system. Coach Walker pitched for the Grand Prairie Texas HS team with teammate Kerry Wood. Walker, a lefty, is a year older than Wood.
We got Turpen at the trade deadline from the Giants for Ramon S. Ramirez. Turpen (24) is a big sidearm righty reliever ( 6’4", 230) with 3 option years remaining. If, and that’s big, he can keep this going, he’ll get a call up taste of the Boston bullpen during the ’11 season.
