A bit of a bummer though at the same time, I don't completely understand as to why. Perhaps Theo & Co. feel that he's not as valuable as before?

well even before his injury and as a part time player

he fell off a cliff pretty quick last year offensively. If he accepted arbitration I believe the least they’d be able to offer him is $2.4 million and probably be able to get more than that given his history. They could still sign him for less, but he doesn’t really look like a good option to me, not when we need Salty and someone else who can handle about half the catching.

He's a backup.

I don’t think he expects anything beyond that in regards to money and playing time. I certainly don’t think he’d get a raise in arbitration like Lauber says as he was hurt and even then, his performance wasn’t too great.

I think I could take him at $2 million, but no more really.

Boras can only do so much for him in this case.

Most teams will know that too.

’Tek’s made enough money in his career and he’s been in Boston his entire career. You think he’ll go elsewhere for a million more? Maybe, but after realizing that nobody wanted him after he declined arbitration the last time, he may just stick around.

Can't offer him less than 80% of his salary in arb

unless I’m remembering that wrong. Hence the $2.4 million

Arbitration would mean paying him way more than he's worth.

And if Tek is our backup, what would that make Salty?

Makes sense.

That's if the arbitration panel

Voted for a raise/in favor of the player. Does ’Tek honestly deserve that?

Maybe

If it’s anything like an arbitration hearing for pre-FA players, both the team and the player submit one salary # and the board can only pick one of the two.

Boras can point to his hot start, his long history with the team, and his staff handling abilities to get just a very slight bump in pay for 2011.

No arby makes sense

As mentioned, at worst he makes $2.4M. I don’t see him making more than $2M on the open market. If the Sox don’t trade for a catcher, I think Boston is his best option. I don’t see too many him getting too many offers as a starter and he could easily start 100-120 games if Salty falters.

Today is the deadline for just types A and B, right?

If so, when is the deadline for the other players?

I believe this is simply the deadline to offer arbitration for Free Agents

Although really, why would you want to offer arb. for a non-ranked FA? There would be no incentive in that.

I believe the deadline for deciding whether to tender a contract to a pre-FA player is coming up in early December.

Yeah, I meant non FA
