Community Projections: Strong Showing On Scutaro

It wasn't a repeat of 2009 for Marco Scutaro with the Red Sox, but at the same time, it wasn't a failure of a season. Playing through injuries all season, Scutaro ended up with some deflated rate stats, but interestingly managed to beat out almost all of the plate appearance projections by 100-or-more.  The results are some surprisingly accurate predictions in four categories...and the complete swings and misses in the other two.

So here's Scutaro's season:

2010 - Marco Scutaro 150 632 92 174 38 0 11 56 53 71 5 4 .275 .333 .388

It's hard to choose a single winner with all the good guesses, but I'm going to go with dsharp here. He didn't have the perfect average like Drabidea or BHeebs, but he's within one or two on three categories, including two rates. That's pretty damn good.

Booyah!!

The question is: Who will he be playing for in 2011?

My guess is: Not us.

I'm guessing Giants

or at least I’m hoping giants. I really want to see if we could get Romo for him.

Interesting though on trading Scutaro

some teams might bite as he is fairly inexpensive SS solution on a 1 year deal. The problem the Sox have is do you rely on Lowrie at SS with his injury history…

by BobZupcic on Nov 19, 2010 8:38 PM EST reply actions

True

ok, his recent injury/mono history plus his limit ML experience

by BobZupcic on Nov 19, 2010 8:46 PM EST up reply actions

injuries happen.

nothing you could plan much for.

i think we had 4 catchers out at the same time.

my polish granddaddy jaja, used to say, charlie lowe, (he called everyone charlie, he couldn’t remeber our names) plan for success and then make adjustments.

he also said something like if you open a bottle of vodka, you finish it.

or...

Theo knows that Iglesias is closer than anyone on this board expected. OR…they are putting in on the Japanese kid from Chiba Lotte.

Either way, teams are willing to give up pieces for Scutaro and the Red Sox have better or similar options for SS.

Maybe THAT'S why Sean keeps saying that Scutaro sucks...

He keeps looking at his prediction instead of his actual numbers.

Galactus does as he pleases. Because Galactus is drunk.

His actual numbers really suck

If you haven’t noticed. Because Scutaro sucks.

I know I'm in the minority here on OTM

but I want us to keep Scutaro. I think he holds more value as a member of this team, as opposed to what he will bring back in a trade.

I have no idea what Scutaro will bring back in a trade.

But I’m not on the Sean Zero Wagon, I can tell you that.

by went9 on Nov 20, 2010 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

I tend to agree.

I think he fits fine with the Sox, and can hold a lot of value for us.

he's a solid ballplayer, and signed on the cheap.

Even if he is not a starter, he can still contribute nicely.

I'll be happy if he's still around

but if he can be traded for a good setup guy and save us a decent amount of money, I’m all for trading him. Certainly don’t want to trade him just for the sake of trading him. Even if he’s a non-starter he can be very useful to the sox.

by wolf9309 on Nov 20, 2010 1:30 PM EST up reply actions

+1

If he brings back a Sergio Romo or a Matt Thornton then I’m all for trading him, but he’s still a valuable utility player, basically an older Lowrie with less power.

If I was your math homework I'd be really hard and you'd be doing me on your desk.
I'm a 7 WAR player in bed.

I agree, if we can get a pen arm that will relatively see the field more than him,

then we can trade him because our depth was a huge problem. It wasn’t just Paps or the 7th inning guy; we couldn’t keep games close when not using our high leverage guys. If not, then it won’t hurt to keep him.

What team

Will spend $6.5m for a .700-720 OPS? With a negative UZR?

by Sean O on Nov 21, 2010 10:19 AM EST up reply actions

Last year the New York Yankees did....and then some.
Bonafide everyday shortstops are tough to come by, plus the sheer number of teams looking to shore up the position likely means that the Red Sox will get a good return if they do make Scutaro available.

Link to other team interest

Scutaro was second in OPS for SS in the AL in 2010. SS is not generally known as a power position.

Link to SS 2010 AL by OPS

I’m not going to cry a river if Scutaro goes by way of the trade with Lowrie now healthy and showing how he can step it up but Marco Scutaro signed with the Sox and took less money to do so. He was offered more by another team but he took less to play in Boston. Not many players do that.
He also got Cortisone shots in his arm all season long so that he could bare the pain and play every day.
He’s shows up every day and says, put me in coach, I’m ready to play.
I have no problem paying Scutaro $6.25/yr, a player who’s average over the last three seasons is 3 WAR..

by went9 on Nov 21, 2010 11:45 AM EST up reply actions

I'd like to see us keep him

so not to see the likes of a Bill Hall manning 2B or SS

I think a Dusty – Jed 2B-SS combo with Scutaro spelling the 2 is a great troika

Traded

No need to give stats, he will not be a Red Sox in 2011.
