So...Who Backs Up First Base?
With the trading of Casey Kotchman, the Sox have received a utility infielder...who does not play first. Maybe the Mike Lowell trade will bring in a new first baseman? Are the sox comfortable with Aaron Bates?...I certainly know Lars Anderson isn't ready for the jump...
There are multiple free agents still available, but none of these really appeal to me except for Russell Branyan...who would not come here to be a bench player...here's a list of the top remaining free agent first basemen.
- Russell Branyan
- Hank Blalock
- Adam LaRoche
- Aubrey Huff
- Carlos Delgado
- Fernando Tatis
- Eric Hinske
- Robb Quinlan
Anyone else appeal to you?

I think Aaron Bates is a good option
I think he can back up the position fine. The most likely scenario, I would guess though, would be Varitek catching and Martinez at first if Youk was out for a bit.
I think you mean bs.uf. I think his parents made him stop going on the internet or something.

Probably.
Either that or he cured his insomnia.
Or gave up on abstinence.
Regardless, he was a pretty cool kid.

Yeah that guy was great
The abstinence thing was hilarious, because he was like 15, so I don’t think he would be getting much action anyway.
Made a lot of great posts though.

Ha ha ha...
…kind of like me abstaining from climbing palm trees.
Easy to do when there’s none growing within 1000 miles of ya. ;)

He said he needed to focus on school.
I’m sure he’ll be back in the spring.

Looks like its Hall now
But I do like the Aaron Bates idea. He doesnt strike me as a Jeff Bailey/Chris Carter AAAA guy, maybe just a late bloomer.
Ortiz and VMart

Ew on Ortiz
If Beltre is hurt, do they put V-Mart at 1B and have ’Tek catch full-time with a possible Mark Wagner call-up?
Assuming Lowell is also moved, I’d like someone a bit more…solidified for a back-up 1B. Bates, I guess in a pinch, maybe Diamondbacks won’t be competing and we can pick up Conor Jackson. That’s who I’d really like.

Obviously Ew on Ortiz
But, he can play it if he has to.
And I’d say that if Beltre gets hurt than the immediate solution is definitely for Tek to catch and Vic to first. Which is fine, really. Say what you want about Tek, as far as back-ups go he’s pretty good. (Yeah, yeah…currently overpriced, but whatever).
However…let’s all just hope Beltre doesn’t get hurt, yeah?

Well, if Beltre gets hurt Lowrie could still be a possibility
Depending on when the injury happens. Tatis is also a possibility. Still like Jackson, but that’s not happening

I like Tatis
Can play 1b/3b/lf/rf and played a couple at 2b to. Could get cheap and hasnt hit to bad over last 2 yrs
Adam LaRoche
I liked Adam for full time 1B, and I like him as Back up at 1st, though he is a bit expensive for backup. He has a good glove and can hit…. if they were to bring him on full time I think he would eclipse what Bay did in Fenway, with far less defensive thrills and spills. Move Youk to Third regularly to keep Beltre honest and off the IR, then platoon him with Papi. Yes he is a notorious second half player which is great because that is just in time for the playoff push. And He keeps everyone at about 120 games and fresh. Theo won’t go for it though, even though the Beltre deal pushed them over the Luxury Tax Ceiling.
Oh, I know this one!

conor jackson is weakening
at least I think he is
Well, he had that whole Valley Fever thing
He should be back to some degree this coming year.
He’d really just be a back-up LF/1B/DH, but I think he’s the main LFer for the Diamonbacks and they’re trying to make a run of it.
