Breaking News: The Red Sox could be in on Adrian Beltre
In a stunning turn of events, the Red Sox may or may not be in on Adrian Beltre, depending on who you ask. What a huge development!
UPDATE: I'm going to make this the Beltre news post until something more concrete shows up. As is, Beltre is very close to choosing a team, per Tim Brown. The word is that he's got an option on each coast. The A's had been in on Beltre for a while, making them the popular choice for the west coast team. In the east, there's not a ton of options other than the Sox. In the NL, the Braves, Phillies, Mets, and Nationals are all set at 3rd while the Marlins aren't going to be spending that much. In the AL, the Yanks and Rays are set at 3rd, the Jays haven't ever been linked to Beltre, and the O's just acquired Garret Atkins last month.
If the A's are in on it, then presumably the price has dropped below the 10+ million that Beltre was seeking earlier, as it becomes clear there's just not a huge market out there.
Update [5:25 EST]: Gordon Edes thinks we offered him a 2-year backloaded contract, but his reasoning is based on what looks to be an incorrect understanding of how the CBT is calculated, so take that as you will. One thing to note is that he mentions a "likely drop in Beltre's market", which was estimated at about $10 million before.

Heyman says the Sox are in
Michael Silverman of the Herald says the Sox aren’t even in the mix for Beltre.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.
For the record, I think the O's said they were signing Atkins to play 1b
Or have at least discussed it, so they MAY be a possibility. I still think (and hope) the Sox are a greater possibility.
Good call.
Wigginton is all they’ve got at 1st right now…And that’s not the kind of production you want out of a 1B. At least Atkins has history.

I doubt it.
The O’s have Luke Scott to put somewhere and their OF is crowded as it is.

We'll see.
No guarantee anything goes down today. But it’s certainly nice to have something to put up.

I don't really know what to think about this.
