Draft Picks

As of right now, what picks will we have entering the next draft.  I realize that we surrendered our first rounder to LAA and our second rounder to Toronto, but we also received first-round and supplemental picks for Wagner and Bay, right?  Does anyone know the draft order as it stands now, and what picks we will be using?

(Ignore this. Extra words. Go Sox. Pitching and defense blah blah blah blah blah blah.)

Red Sox draft 29th

But that’s inconsequential in the first two rounds. In round 1, we draft 20th (Braves) and in round 2, we draft 7th (Mets—1st round top-15 picks are protected). In between, we have 2 supplemental sandwich picks. We should, in short, have 4 picks in the top-50.

Maybe only 3.

If 5 type-B free agents were offered arbitration and signed elsewhere, we’d draft 50th.

Thanks

Didn’t realize that the Mets’ first rounder was protected. We still moved up, and those supplemental picks are pretty helpful. Buchholz came in the sandwich round, right?

Buchholz, Hagadone, Lowrie, Bowden...

Generally, yes, you’re gonna be able to get good talent there.

OK, making it simpler:

If I’m not mistaken:

The Red Sox draft 20th, 34th, 35th, and 53rd.

Actually, with Valverde's signing I believe we're down to 36th and 38th, but those can't go down any lower

Our Mets pick is at like 55 right now, might go down farther when more Type B’s sign.

If a first round pick is protected

or otherwise unavailable, why don’t they award the team a sandwich pick? For example, why don’t the Red Sox get two picks in the supplemental round in stead of one and a second round pick? It seems like a pretty far drop off from the Mets number 1 pick to pick 55 overall…

by Schulz on Jan 19, 2010 12:25 AM EST up reply actions

Because that way a team with a protected 1st rounder wouldn't have to give up anything to sign a Type A

And the makers of the system didn’t want that to be the case. At this point you always get 1 and only 1 Supplemental Round pick for a lost Type A or Type B player. The other pick comes directly at the cost of the signing team.

Wasnt't the Hansen/ Ellsbury Pick almost consecutive....?

Sometime like that, but I’m too lazy to look that up right now.

Almost

Ellsbury was at 23 and Hansen was at 26. We also got Buchholz at 42, Lowrie at 45 and Bowden at 47.

Man 2005 was a good draft.

2006

and the 2006 draft had Bard, Kalish, Masterson, Lars, Reddick

Two very good drafts back to back…07 is looking like a bust unless we strike it rich with Rizzo

by BobZupcic on Jan 21, 2010 5:17 PM EST up reply actions

Well, Hagadone helped get us V-Mart

So not a complete bust. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Britton have a big year either.

But yeah, Rizzo’s really the one I’m looking forward to the most.

Yeah

07 could be good-ok if everything breaks right (soxprospects ranking in parens)

1st Round – Lost due to signing Julio Lugo
1st Supplemental – Nick Hagadone (traded to get V-Mart)
1st Supplemental – Ryan Dent (33)
2nd Round – Hunter Morris (Did Not Sign)
3rd Round – Brock Huntzinger (NR)
4th Round – Chris Province (Minnesota)
5th Round – Will Mioddlebrooks (26)
6th Round – Anthony Rizzo (6)
7th Round – David Mailman (36)
Others – Drake Britton (28)

Only Rizzo is ranked in the Top 10, Hagadone is ranked 4th on BA’s Cleveland List.
