Red Sox Re-Sign Hideki Okajima, Avoid Arbitration
[UPDATE, 6:09 p.m.] Ian Browne has contract details:
Okajima's contract is $2.75 million. $50 K bonus at 55 games, 60 games, 65 games and 70 games.
------
The Red Sox have avoided arbitration with Hideki Okajima, re-signing him to a one-year deal, according to MLB.com's Ian Browne via Twitter.
Bringing back Okajima, 34, was obviously a no-brainer. Despite having an "off year" in 2009, Okajima was still one of the more valuable pieces of the Red Sox bullpen. Without Billy Wagner and Takashi Saito in the bullpen for 2010, Okajima's presence will be big. The Red Sox are still trying to fill holes in the bullpen, but at least Oki will be back for at least one more year.

And it was quite early in the offseason, too

Probably about what he would have received in Arb…but glad he’s back. Nice International signing by our scouting division
Oh right, I see it.
That’s a pretty good amount I’d say. I’m still not happy with the Sox bullpen though. I’d like to see them sign a Saito-type reliever, rather than resorting to their old method of throwing 10 guys at the wall and seeing who sticks.
Ideally we’d have a bullpen that as good on paper as the one with which we entered 2009.
I really feel like most likely richardson ends up being the plan
and the 10 guys are there as AAA depth for in case someone is doing terribly
I thought Saito was an example of the “throw 10 guys at the wall” method.

Nah, IIRC, Saito was a legitimate signing.
The only problem being that he had a really lucky year we couldn’t exactly expect him to repeat.

He can just reach 90 with his fastball but the guy knows how to pitch and keep ’em guessing. Welcome back.
Pitchers and catchers report in 31 days…Yes
It's January and I'm running a fever...how many days 'till pitchers and catchers report?
and he's got that funky, no-look, motion that hitters aren't used to seeing
effective pitcher. good signing.
