GameThread: Baltimore Orioles at Boston Red Sox, Sep 8, 2009

Baltimore Orioles at Boston Red Sox, Sep 8, 2009 7:10 PM EDT

That's right. It's on. Crunch time.

The Orioles come in to Boston in a tense, furious race for the division with the Red Sox. The two teams have slugged it out all season, and now the young team's playoff hopes rest on this series.

... Oh, sorry, I'm looking at the future. 3 Years from now. Or is it 5? 10? Whenever it is, we'll never see those wacky Orioles coming (see picture on the left for proof of wackiness).

Comment away.

They traded away the heart and soul of the team. They were 1 or 2 pen arms and maybe a 3/4 starter away from being a world series contender. Mid way through the season, they had more runs scored than the sox and maybe the Rays IIRC.

dice-k came up huge in 2007

as i’m sure you know, in game seven. that was his first year in the bigs and he wasnt rattled. thats what im talking about. and the discussion is kind of stupid actaully becuase the four starters in the playoffs are obviously going to be Beckett, Lester, Dice K and Buchholz. Switch the order of the last two, it doesnt matter. byrd wont be in there and neither will wake, except out of desperation, and only if hes healthy

ALCS Game 3 – 4.2 IP 6 H 4 ER 2 BB 6 K (101 pitches) The pen made this close by going 3.1 scoreless

ALCS Game 7 – 5 IP 6 H 2 ER 0 BB 3 K (86 pitches) Oki and Paps were the story here. Each went 2 scoreless innings.

im not sure i do

i still believe in Daisuke as a veteran who will not get rattled in any situation. Buchholz has shown great improvement mentally over the past year, and another month on pennant baseball should develop him even further. But seeing as a postseason is four men, and paul byrd and tim wakefield should be nowhere near it, daisuke would help a lot by being healthy. the experience and talent are there, and i bet the shoulder is too. nothing wrong with the young guy buchholz pitching fourth though

Dice averaged 5 IP in the post-season

His only good start was Game 2 of the ALCS last year. Otherwise, he has been nothing special.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Sep 8, 2009 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

he's been decent

ERA of 4.79. nothing special but mentally tough and gave us a chance

by revived0103 on Sep 8, 2009 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd love to see Daisuke come back to form, certainly.

But just as he doesn’t get rattled, he also doesn’t pitch to situations. I’m worried about this pen going 4 innings after a 5 inning start from Daisuke. I’d say I trust Buck to manage 7 innings more than I’d trust Matsuzaka.

by Drugs Delaney on Sep 8, 2009 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions

At least Beckett and Lester are guys you can usually trust to go deep.

Workhorses are a big help in October. A 5 inning Daisuke performance wouldn’t be so bad with Wagner and Paps ready to go and Beckett available to give them the night off.

by Ben Buchanan on Sep 8, 2009 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

this argument is kind of pointless though

because unless we have wakefield, byrd or tazawa going, its going to be buch and dice k. the only thing i can imagine people are considering is that wake will be in the rotation, which he wont be

by revived0103 on Sep 8, 2009 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions

very very good

Number Two after Lester, ’cause who knows what will come from Beckett?

by Mister Snitch on Sep 8, 2009 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I trust Beckett.

He’s having a fine year. Hit a rough patch with the homers but had a good game yesterday, has always had the Ks going, etc.
