This is the one thing the whiners may have a point about

I’m fine with Tito resting all the guys who are going to be on the playoff roster — not one of them needs to take the field again until the playoffs if that’s what the Sox feel gives them the best chance to win in the postseason. But it costs a small fortune to go to a game at Fenway these days, and I’d be furious if I shelled out my money to watch that lineup play. For that lineup, you’d have to be in Pawtucket.

If I'm you, sure

But I live in Boston. I can do that any time I want.

by RSNexile on Sep 30, 2009 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh.

IDK – it’s still the Sox. I’d be thrilled.

by bdalebs on Sep 30, 2009 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions

It's the PawSox

Anyone who paid for a ticket to tonight’s game ought to at least get discounted tickets to a game that counts next year.

7 of 9 correct

so my starting line-up( i posted last nite) for tonite is only off by 2 players:
no Green or Brown (colorful) - Kotchman and Gonzalez …

i had: Gathright(CF) – Lowrie (SS) – Reddick (RF) – Ortiz (1B) – Kottaras (DH)
            Green (2B) – Woodward (3B) – Anderson (LF) – Brown (C )

will somebody

please put Wakefield out of his misery…he’s been here many years too many!

by db24 on Sep 30, 2009 7:32 PM EDT reply actions

The hell?

$4mil per year as a perpetual team option and he always outperforms that when healthy. Tonight you should be thanking him for being one of the most loyal and consistent players we’ve had since FA began.

by bdalebs on Sep 30, 2009 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I just want him to play the first half of the season

He can’t get through a full season anymore, but he’s a very good middle-of-the-rotation starter in the first half. Give us 20 starts from April through July at $4M and he’s one of the best bargains in baseball. But after that? He has nothing left.

I wonder if the thing to do is to have him rehab until July, then come back around the all-star break. If he can give us 15-20 solid starts in the second half and playoffs next year he’d be the equivalent of picking up the best available starting pitcher at the trade deadline, only we wouldn’t have to give up anything to get him.

by RSNexile on Sep 30, 2009 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Hmm... maybe.

The back surgery would make that a possibility. It could also mean all his troubles are behind him.

by bdalebs on Sep 30, 2009 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions

That would be great

Having the surgery would be the best of both worlds — he’d have to sit out the first half anyway, but he’d be healthy and sturdy enough to finish the year. Then, if he’s still healthy, he could try to come back for the whole year in 2011.

The thing is, at his age, you can’t count on anything. The knuckler may not be as hard on the body as what everyone else throws, but when you’re that old, things just start falling apart. That’s fine if you’re not a professional athlete, but it ends your career if you are.

by RSNexile on Sep 30, 2009 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

More fit than Satchell Paige or Nolan Ryan?

Not likely. Those guys were freaks.

I would’ve thrown Roger in there too, but we all know that was steroids rather than fitness.

by RSNexile on Sep 30, 2009 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions

What BS is saying, beyond the loyalty, eyc.

Is he give the Sox very good value for only $4 million. Would you rather pay $16.5 million for the MFY’s #2 starter?

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

It kinda sux that I am home/injured this week as I’d rather be able to watch the playoffs…too bad I could not schedule my back injury.

It's not fun

But I doubt the games are that meaningful. Right now, I’m finishing up a look at every AL playoff team since 2000, how they finished the season and what they did in the playoffs. In short, whether or not going into the postseason hot or cold matters. I’ll post my findings soon.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Tim Wakefield is an embarrassment

If he does not retire after tonight, he should be let go. It is obvious that we don’lt care about winning tonight or about our offensive prowess, but that still does not justify allowing a non-major league caliber pitcher to represent this team. Do we need to see 5 guys in a row hit homers off Wakefield before the obvious is realized??

The Pirates are getting millions too

They haven’t produced since Barry Bonds was clean. But the Florida Marlins, with the smallest payroll in baseball, are going to end up around five games out of the playoffs.

And how about those New York Mets? Who knew that $135 million bought just 67 wins?

I guess millions of dollars can’t buy everything.

Are you not watching.

Do you not see a washed up pitcher? Sometimes I think you use stats as blinders to reality.

by NG on Sep 30, 2009 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I see a pitcher who throws the most random pitch possible.

And he’s managed to control it well enough to be above average this year.

And four months from now, if he's healthy again

The Sox will renew his option, and he’ll be around for another year. The Sox are not going to get rid of him just because he’s hurt.

Ahem:

/anecdotal

And, if you want to look at more recent pitchers who threw the same pitch: the Niekros pitched into their mid-40’s, IIRC. Let Wake get the surgery, which should fix all the problems he’s been having in the past couple seasons, and THEN judge his ability.

Random fact

Jason Bay and JD Drew are 1 and 2 in wOBA and OPS for all AL outfielders this year.

by Buzzy on Sep 30, 2009 9:06 PM EDT reply actions

Source?

Fangraphs suggests Bay and Drew are 2 and 3 in OPS (behind Adam Lind—-and not counting Zobrist, who played most of the year as a 2B), and 1 and 4 in wOBA (Lind and Shin-Soo Choo coming in 2 and 3).

But still, not bad at all.

Don’t they have young pitchers that could use experience?

I feel violated by what I have seen in the last 5 games.

Maybe it does not matter to some of you, but to me, I would have Tito fired for this embarrassing precedent performance. I have never been so ashamed of a professional sports team as I am now of the Sox. What they did tonight should disqualify them from the playoffs. I believe this resting everyone and playing Wakefield and just giving up will backfire on them so that they are momentum-less in the playoffs, just like they are now. Have they no pride, and do they really think they can flick a magic switch which will reverse all this negativism and fan letdown??

I’m pissed!

by NG on Sep 30, 2009 10:03 PM EDT reply actions

Seriously, if you're so ashamed, why don't you follow through with your threats to stop paying attention to the Sox?

Is it because they’re actually a pretty damn good team accomplished a goal with a few games left to spare?

by bdalebs on Sep 30, 2009 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Another night like this and I gone.

I will not waste my time with a team with no pride and desire to win every game! They owe it to the fan base watching and those paying big bucks to fill that staduim.

by NG on Oct 1, 2009 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

You've posted many variations on a theme, NG

But this is perhaps the dumbest one yet.

“Giving up?”

What exactly is to be gained, now that the Sox have secured a playoff berth, to put their players in harm’s way. The Sox dodged a HUGE bullet last week when the ball hit Lester in the quad instead of on the kneecap. Making everybody play as if they’re still in the middle of a playoff race? Not smart.

Also, keep in mind that most of the regulars probably got rather blotto last night, and a day off probably is in their best interests anyways.
