Beckett out, Bowden starting tonight

Ian Browne is reporting that Josh Beckett, who was scheduled to start tonight in 3 games serie against Toronto Jays, has been scratched due to a mild back spasm.

Instead 22 years old Michael Bowden will be starting for the Boston Red Sox.

Here's the first for Ian's Tweets.

And here's the second of Mr. Browne.

I hope that it's really mild and the management was being cautious about it. How do you think this will affect the scheduling of the rotation for the playoffs?

Wasn't the rotation all messed up to begin with?

This may just be them getting it in order. Beckett/Lester – Beckett/Lester – Buchholz

True.

Although it seems like a bit weird to start Bowden after he pitched for a couple innings on Saturday.

Not all that weird.

His restfullness isn’t exactly the biggest of their issues.

True.

Hope he hasn’t become a waste arm though.

well...

there’s no way he’d be on the postseason roster. So he might as well eat a few innings.

True.

I just don’t want him to go psycho.

Agreed

I seem to recall (perhaps on a NESN broadcast) that Beckett felt a bit fatigued. I’m hoping Lester and Beckett each go 5 innings on Thursday and Friday in preparation of hopefully a long playoff run.

The spasms have been felt in the upper left for Beckett...not on pitching side of his body

Francona is saying that

“I don’t think we’ll just skip a couple days. He may miss a turn but we need to talk about it.”

That worries me the most ’cause after a long rest (more than 7 days) pitchers lose the feel for the breaking stuff and sometimes feel too strong and over throw: A huge gamble in a playoff game.
Positive news: Lester will start Thursday after a side session that went very well.

tRA is the real stat.

"back spasms"

Any time Red’s Celtics needed a roster spot, somebody would mysteriously develop “back spasms”.

It’s not something I would worry a lot about.
