On another funny note

A Rangers fan speakin’ about Hank Blalock:

I was talking to the Great Bill James yesterday, and he said that he had developed a new stat, WAtLD, Wins Above the Living Dead, to describe Hank’s play this season. Hank is 7 runs below a zombie replacement at first base. Do you realize how terrible that is? Zombie’s can’t think, they’re slow, and they’re often ejected from the game for eating opposing baserunners’ brains.
That’s how bad Blalock has been this season.

The season is too long already. The best four teams regardless of division should make the playoffs, seeded by record.

For example, if the season ended today the MFY would be #1 seed and would host Texas, the #4 seed. The Sox would host LA. Detroit sucks, and is only going to the playoffs due to geography.

Oh...

Nah – it’d allow the stronger divisions to get more bids.

by bdalebs on Sep 24, 2009 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

Last year the MFY missed the playoffs, even though they had a better record than the two teams that tied in the Central (the Chisox made it). The Rays, Sox, MFY, and Angels should have been the playoff teams last year.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Only possible through an extra Wild Card.

Or your plan – but Sandy’s is less radical, so more likely.

by bdalebs on Sep 24, 2009 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions

No, an extra WC is more radical

An extra team means an extra playoff series. This means the season is longer, either starting a week earlier or ending a week later. In both cases, it’s way too cold to play baseball. Also, it would be a WC series to punish teams for not winning their division—even if the WC team ofr teams are better than one or two division winners.

When the Sox won the WS in 2004 as the WC, they had the third-best record in all of baseball. Yet, the Angels had home field in the ALDS. The ’04 WC Sox had a better record than the ’07 division-winning Sox.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

first round bye?

I'm not sure how you'd do that

5 teams would make it (extra WC). 4 teams would play with 1 team having a bye. After the two series you atill have an odd number of teams (3). Giving the #1 seed a bye until the ALCS doesn’t really help them stay sharp.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Everybody Wins!

I say do away with records and stats and give every team a prize and a playoff spot (except the MFY)

by bdalebs on Sep 24, 2009 10:56 PM EDT up reply actions

How?

You are taking the best fout teams in each league—the best four records. How are .500 teams going to sneak in or scrape by?

The current set-up favors division winners, even those like the ‘06 Cards (83 wins) and 2000 MFY (87 wins). The weakest teams in the post-season are usually division winners. Almost always the WC team is better than one (sometimes two) division winners. Often, there are teams that don’t make the playoffs because they are in tough divisions, yet have better records than some playoff teams. Look at Texas this year. They’re better than Detroit, but their season is over.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Baseball is a sport where .600 teams are hailed as a success.

Teams that are .520-.550 shouldn’t be around in October.

Had very legit playoff hopes late into the year.

I hope Tito pull Clay after that inning

No need to overwork the kid, put Ramirez then Bard then Saito.
No MDC please.

Depends on the score and how Buchholz feels

He’s at 94 pitches.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Sep 24, 2009 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions

94 is enough IMO

plus he’s reaching career high in IP, with that score I don’t see why he goes another inning plus he has a head cold.

As I said, it depends how he feels

The Sox have no days off until the end of the season. If Buchholz can go one more inning, fine. If he isn’t up to it, take him out. We’re going with 6 starters, so he’ll get extra rest.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

you need to keep guys like Ramirez and Saito sharp they didn't pitch for like 3-4 days

they didn’t pitch for like 3-4 days. Anyway Tito is smarter than me so…
