Bloody Sox Laundry - 9/2/09

Very little today - I guess everyone's caught up in the series. There is always some cool stuff from multi-team sites though, like this:

Beloit College Mindset List: Baseball Version

If you want to feel either really old or really young, that link is for you. The actual lists published by Beloit College are also pretty interesting - it's easy to forget that some people weren't around to see the same things you did.

And the official reporters always have inside access to bring us revelations like this:

Dice-K, Lowrie eyeing imminent returns - redsox.com

While the Red Sox have most of their pieces in place for the stretch run, shortstop Jed Lowrie and right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka are still sharpening up and fine-tuning in Minor League rehab assignments.

Not sure if this was written before or after Dice-K's shelling.

Links in comments, same as always. Caption contest again!

Excellent linkage.

I’m still waiting for Jed to get his chance first before we start getting into any sort of trade offers.

I can't stand the thought of giving up on Jed this early.

Neither can I. Jed's got a real chance at being a stable, above average SS for a while

That’s valuable, as he doesn’t seem to be poor in any one area.

That said, most of us know that a lot of fans think he’s too injury prone and too much of a bad hitter (from his limited time actually in the MLB) to be anything more than a utility guy. And as wrong as tht belief is, I wouldn’t be opposed to see the FO get a very stable SS option in the offseason who can start for periods of time if need be, like a Scutaro (who is a Type A, sadly, and is having a career year, but whatever), who can split time at SS with Jed or also play other positions (which I believe Scutaro can).

We just wasted a full season waiting for Jed.

This year was supposed to be his test year, but instead he has barely played and we have given Nick Green hundreds of PA’s. That is just not acceptable for another year. There is a fairly decent chance that Jed is never going to be any better than Nick Green, so how long do we wait for the kid to show us what he’s got? At some point we have to move on.

We saw that he could be at least a league average SS...

With a broken wrist. We also saw that the team went paranoid and did everything they could to avoid following the events that occured after Nomar’s wrist injury. The fact that they put Jed back on the DL before finding out what was wrong with his wrist this most recent time screams to me that they see a future in him.

Jed’s not injury prone – he had one bad injury, which he played through for a long period of time. That probably didn’t help it though, and the team moronically asked him to avoid surgery and play the chances of it healing in time for ST, instead of getting it fixed for sure and having him miss a few weeks of the season. Then, he had the surgery, came back ahead of schedule (IIRC), and had a few struggles in limited time before his arm hurt and the team shuttled him to the DL pre-doctor-visit.
He was actually a pretty good hitter last year, considering the injury, and he’s looked good at every level of the minors. I’d rather have him be the starter going into next year with Green/Gonzo/etc. as the backup.

Ortiz

If Ortiz could only hit his weight with RISP, the Sox would have at least 10 more wins this year.

Absurd hyperbole.

10 wins equates to about 100 runs, just to let you know.
