Bloody Sox Laundry - 9/14/09
That was a lot of baseball. Some quick notes:
No truth to report of Halladay offer - Extra Bases
Bloggy has the original report in the FanShots, for those of you intertested. Gotta love the great mind of Theo, who replies to an important email with a single word.
Paul Byrd gets the start on Wednesday against the Angels. #redsox
So it'll be Dice-K, Byrd, Beckett. Odd combo.
John Henry's Blog - NESN.com
This isn't going to end up overly-censored at all.

Yup...thought I was a big shot, breaking the story here for OTM
Unfortunately, I didn’t read the post over in Daily Dish closely enough. Had I noticed it was someone from Sun Media that had “broke the story” I would have been far more skeptical. 5 years in Ottawa has taught me that the Sun is essentially suck.
Man I love that tuna casserole.

heh
Yeah, live and learn. Sometimes a story seems so juicy it overloads your BS detectors.

Both Epstein and Riccardi would be le retarded
for proposing/turning down that deal. I wish there could be some sort of Writers Points System that for every bullcrap “rumor” they spread or crappy article they write they get points against them. If you accumulate a certain amount of points BOOM off to the gulag for you. I’d like to nominate Mike Lupica for immediate expulsion.
Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

I'm suggesting Cafardo here in beantown
He would excellent for the NY post!
"Swing and a ground ball, stabbed by Foulke. He has it. He underhands to first. And the Boston Red Sox are the World Champions! For the first time in 86 years, the Red Sox have won baseball's World Championship!"

If he's an idiot
then he’d fit right in with the rest of the NY media.

Was about to post the very same thing.
That would have to be one of the stupidest offers and perhaps the stupidest offer rejected of all time.

The real story here, anyway,
is how badly Toronto management handled Halliday (their star, after all), and the whole opportunity, really. The best offers they would have gotten are now history, because they lacked the nerve to pull the trigger.
By contrast, the Sox acted, and got V-Mart. What can I tell ya.

I too was surprised to see Dice AND Byrd coming up
But I am thinking four things:
1) Sox are thinking playoffs, trying to get their Big Three (Lester, Clay, Beckett – who else) some rest. They’re just not going to mess with the 5-man rotation by going to their best 3 or 4 to try and gain ground. (The operative theory, I think, is that there’s no point making the playoffs if you’re not prepared to WIN them.)
2) Sox probably want to see which of these two guys (Dice/Byrd) they want to trust, come playoff time. I think it’s a fair guess we won’t see both of them. In fact, I expect one of them won’t even be in the rotation by season’s end. (Probably Byrd, but again, that remains to be seen.)
3) The Sox probably want to make their choice between Byrd and Dice sooner rather than later, because soon Wake will be ready to attempt a return, and they’ll want to look at him as well. Again, unless Byrd really shows them something he’s gotta be considered the odd man out.
4) In the first round of the playoffs, they’re going Lester, Beckett, and Buchholz. After that, they’ll add whoever survives the Dice/Wake/Byrd triage. Farrell has offered some encouraging words about Dice, and the thing about Wake’s back is it’s an unstable, unpredictable situation. So, after the first round I have to figure it’s Dice in the rotation. I don’t think Matsuzaka really has to ‘win’ that spot, I think that’s more like his spot to lose.

1) If the Sox hadn’t had the rain-out, Lester would be pitching Wednesday, no doubt. But I’ll take the exchange of a possibly crappy Lester start (bases loaded, 1 out) for 8 innings of absolute dominance.
2) Don’t forget Wakefield.
3) Oh, you didn’t. But yeah, agreed.
4) I’d expect the team would start with Wakefield on the playoff roster since he’s the most likely to go on the DL and allow one of the other guys to get added to the roster. I don’t know if Daisuke would accept that explanation though. Probably not. Which means he’ll need to be on there too, creating some serious issues.

agreed
1) A somewhat tired Lester is better than a well-rested almost-anyone.
2) I didn’t.
3) You noticed I didn’t.
4) Well, yeah, the Sox may make things ‘interesting’ that way.

Byrd..
Was he picked up in time for the playoff roster? I was trying to remember.

Credit where credit is due:
Francona managed the double header pretty well in my opinion. Sure, his players played well for him, but the 2 lineups he put out there were well balanced considering the situation, he didn’t make panic moves with the pen, and the Ortiz PH was a very good call with rosters expanded.
I bash the guy a lot when he makes mistakes, so I figure it’s only fair I give him credit now when he navigated one of the most complicated scenarios in baseball so deftly.

Tito HAS been 'managing' a lot more
in terms of player moves, putting plays on. He’s not usually so hands-on during games. Usually what he ‘manages’ are playing-time concerns, injuries (real or imagined), and PR,. But hey, that’s ‘management’ too.

Speaking of horrible trades
How bad was the Braves-Rangers trade for Teixeira? The Braves got an excellent player in Teixeira, but a Boras client. They had to realize it was a longshot to resign him. They basically were rolling the dice to put them over the top in the very short run. What did they give up?
1)Jarrod Saltalamacchia,
2)Elvis Andrus,
3)Neftali Feliz
4)Matt Harrison
5)Beau Jones
Jones is likely a non impact player. Harrison has not performed well in the majors, but still has a lot of upside, and was slated to be 3rd in their rotation this year. At 23 he still has a lot of potential, and will likey be a starter in the majors even if just a back end guy.
Andrus is a legit ROY prospect, is a great fielding SS with some offensive ability and speed, and is only 20 (735 OPS from your awesome fielding 20 year old SS is pretty damn good). Feliz is an absolute beast and Salty at 24 is still a potentially strong MLB catcher. This is why tose many for one deals are often disasters…

and then what about what the angels gave up last year to rent him?
Casey Kotchman and no name steve marek. so funny to see that trade after the braves gave up the world for him.
also, if thats ALL the braves wanted for him, we should have rented him and stuck youk at third for the playoffs. that way kotsay wouldnt have been at first. but that is WAY in the past.

What do you guys think of Pedro throwing 130 pitches?

I was just reading that.
That’s freakin’ crazy. It was like some sort of Bizarro Grady Little thing.
It’s also kinda stupid if they blow out the arm of a 37 year old pitcher cuz they made him toss 130 pitches.
Man I love that tuna casserole.

As long as he felt good throwing them, why would the difference between the 130th and 100th pitch...
Be that much different than the difference between the 70th and 100th?

Do you really think that Pedro...
…would say, “I feel like shit. Pull me.” ?
Pitchers always want the ball.

Yeah, but I doubt it's going to do much damage to him.
It’s just one start – the Dusty Baker issue was a combination of consistently over-stretching pitchers and not fixing bad mechanics.
