Game 141: Beckett, big inning due in Rays
Rays vs Red Sox recap
Rays vs Red Sox boxscore
Two things to be happy about: 1) the Red Sox won and 2) they actually played the game.
Josh Beckett tossed five, one-run innings and the Red Sox exploded for eight runs in the third inning to beat the Rays, 9-1, in 5.5 innings on Saturday.
Beckett was solid, giving up four hits and four strikeouts in the win. Beckett is now 15-6 on the season.
The offense was so good in the third inning, it'd probably be easier to show you, in bullet-point form, how they scored:
- V. Martinez singled to shallow right, A. Gonzalez scored, D. Pedroia to second
- K. Youkilis singled to shallow right, D. Pedroia scored, V. Martinez to third
- D. Ortiz singled to shallow right, V. Martinez scored, K. Youkilis to second
- K. Youkilis scored, D. Ortiz to third, J. Bay to second on wild pitch
- A. Gonzalez doubled to deep center, D. Ortiz, J. Bay and J.D. Drew scored
- J. Ellsbury singled, A. Gonzalez scored
Nice. Despite the short game, Alex Gonzalez and Kevin Youkilis both had two hits. Youk had two RBIs, while Gonzo -- that guy who can't hit -- had three.
Sox continue the series -- and finish it -- with a doubleheader today starting at noon. Clay Buchholz and Jon Lester will be on the hill today.

A Gonz
I wasn’t very happy about that pick up and thought he would just be a warm body to have around. However I think that he and VMart were two of the best pickups by any team, VMart has revitalized our offense and gives us a chance to rest the old men on the team and AGonz has come in here and picked up his offense and shored up the defense and more importantly keeps Nick Green out of the lineup. I’ve been very impressed with him.
