Red Sox vs Yankees recap
Red Sox vs Yankees boxscore

This is going about as bad as it could possibly go.

After getting spanked one night, then losing a ridiculously tight game, the Sox follow it up by just getting blanked against, 5-0, to the Yankees on Saturday night.

C.C. Sabathia pretty much rocked the Sox in 7.2 innings of work. Clay Buchholz got the start for the Sox and really didn't do too horribly. He gave up six hits and two runs in six innings of work. He did walk five, but geez, I'll take that at this point.

The bullpen? Eh. Let's not talk about it.

The offensive highlights are ... uh ... uh. Not many. Jacoby Ellsbury had two hits. And that's about it.

The Red Sox need something, but I'm not exactly sure what. Maybe, like, a break? An All-Star break? Oh, wait. Already had one of those and didn't help at all. Whatever it is, the Sox need it and need it fast because at this point, the downward spiral is much faster.

Missing Jason Bay?

From last night to today I had one thought. We need Jason Bay. I know his numbers haven’t been great since the ASB but I am sure he could have hit one out in 15 innings! This afternoon didn’t make much difference besides that it might have given the rest of the offence a lift. Overall just pathetic!!! However still don’t miss Mannywood, Bay was a great replacement and a better team mate. Here is to him getting healthy soon!!!

by PatsCeltsSoxs on Aug 9, 2009 1:11 AM EDT reply actions

Yup.

A one-hamstringed Bay can still swing better than Kotchman.

Manny ain't the only bad man.

by tommy.otm on Aug 9, 2009 1:38 AM EDT up reply actions

The news about Bay is

Still hurt but presumably improving, Red Sox outfielder Jason Bay sat out for the fifth time in six games Saturday with the intention of playing as soon as Sunday night vs. the Yankees.

“I’m not going to put a timeline on it,” Bay said. “I politicked to get in there in [St. Petersburg], too, and then I ended up right back here. Hopefully I’m not more than a couple days away.”

I know it is not a part of this post!

But how sick do the Patriots look coming into the season. Just assuming that most people on this blog are all Boston team fans. Not giving up on the Soxs season just yet! But getting very excited about the new season!

like the break is what did us in. We were playing well before the ASB. Since? Not so much.

by AJBlue7 on Aug 9, 2009 1:46 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree

but we had a good month last month to pull to within a half game back!

by PatsCeltsSoxs on Aug 9, 2009 1:48 AM EDT up reply actions

was away for the week

and look what happens ;-[. actually, not that the umps really played a role when the offense was that asleep, but how bad was it anyway?
a)Kotchman did have his foot on the bag when the ball was in his glove-that run came around to score, when otherwise no runs would have that inning.
b)how crazy was the check-swing punch out of papi? was it even close to a swing?
c)ditto dusty’s “foul tip”?
d)how about the toss out of ram-ram? was he even warned? he has no control, and we are in a 2-0 game with a gassed pen-does it make any sense at all to throw at someone? what about melancon 2 games before?
e)clay was actually ok-he had 3 innings extended on crap (2 on bad plays by Youk in LF, one on the Kotchman bad call). He got repeatedly squeezed by a home plate ump who is famous for a bad zone and a zone that is different for rookies than vets. if you think i am just bitching (i am a bit) type “jim joyce ump” in google and see what comes up.

of course none of it matters. if you can’t plate a run in 24 innings, it is probably just sour grapes, but when things suck, that is when this kind of crap is the most annoying.

I said back in December

the Yankees probably bought themselves another title with two great pitchers and an outstanding first baseman – all locked up now for years. What did the Sox do? Got a few re-treads on the cheap. Well, you see the result. (At least they made a legit effort at getting Tex.)

The 2009 Red Sox: too many “Black Holes” in the lineup; only two quality starting pitchers and a manager who employs no on-field strategies. Worse, a GM who is considered a genius! J.D. Drew, Eric Gagne, Julio Lugo, John Smoltz, 6 different shortstops in five years, etc., etc? No, he has screwed up, big-time, and the Sox are paying for it. Curt Schilling was the best acquisition he made. Without him, we haven’t won a WS in 90 years.

They might be beloved players, but this is a business and guys like Oritz, Lowell and Varitek are long past their best days. Wake was great this year but never can never be counted on past June or July. Dice-K? Well, that’s a whole other story.

It’s time to move forward. You have Dusty and Youk locked up for years; do the same with Ells, Paps, Bard, Bay and maybe Lowrie. Spend some money and make better FA decisions with it because this team is not getting better. Nuff ’Ced

by ccthemovieman on Aug 9, 2009 9:52 AM EDT reply actions

Contradiction
It’s time to move forward. You have Dusty and Youk locked up for years

That’s what they did during the offseason. Not the retread stuff.

They did leave a few holes, though. If unexpected. Everything that wasn’t certain basically fell apart so far this year. Even some things that were supposed to be more certain.

Lock up Bard and Ells when they’re more certain. Drop Papi and Tek and Lowell and Lugo’s contract and Drew, and the team will be renewed around Youk and Petey and Lester and the ilk. Teams oscillate for the most part, much like the Yankees should as their 8-digit contracted players start to get older and older and older.

We should’ve been a top team this year, but none of our depth has panned out and some of our starters have collapsed. We’re in an exceptionally bad way right now, but it’s not like we’re actually a crap team anyway you look at it.

How can you say MFY bought a title

when their two most important players, CC and A-Rod, are terrible in the playoffs?

CC v. the Angels in the ALDS will be a nightmare for NY. A team that can take pitches, hit singles, hit and run, steal bases and plays great defense v. a guy who chokes every time he hits the mound in Oct.. Plus, no protection for Teixeira bc A-Rod is horrible in Oct..

I dont know, l like the Red Sox much more than the Yanks to win the WS. We still have Josh Beckett, they have Mr. gets hammered for 6 runs in 3 and a 1/3.

by SoxAcumen on Aug 9, 2009 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

"l like the Red Sox much more than the Yanks to win the WS"

not trying to be a jerk, but at this point that comment is pretty laughable.

the Sox have holes all over the place. not that the Yankees don’t – the Joba innings limit, absence of a #5 starter, etc. – but they have less issues. Boston has absolutely nothing at the back end of their starting rotation, and injuries to Bay, Lowrie, and Lowell (who still looks hurt to me) have softened their lineup. Beckett and Lester are the only two starters right now that they can rely on. say what you want about A-Rod and CC in October, but the Yankees are in much better shape to get to that month than the Sox are.

outside of 2006, this is the first year that they’ve had the better baseball team since pre-2003 (thought they were about even with Boston that year).

Mike Lupica of the NY Daily News brought up a good point today:
“The last time a regular season was declared over, finished, done after a tremendous extra-inning game at Yankee Stadium, was 2004. Capt. Jeter did the face plant, Flash Flaherty finally won it with a hit into left, and the Red Sox were twice as far behind the Yankees as they were when A-Rod’s ball landed in the seats this time. Three months later they won it all.”

even if the gap goes to 6 1/2 after tonight, the race is far from over.

by SBakerTheTouchdownMaker on Aug 9, 2009 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

whats laughable is your knee jerk reaction

What did I say that is laughable?

That the Red Sox could make the playoffs by getting the wild card? or that the MFY will play the Angels in the ALDS?

or is it that you take pride in CC’s amazing playoff statistics? Or A-Rods?

Are you trying to say that the MFY are not the personal bitches of Mike Scoiscia and Torri Hunter? or that Josh Beckett isnt the best playoff pitcher in the past 50 years?

Oh and nice use of a hack like Mike Lupica, LOL. Seriously next time try and bring some element of objectiveness to your opinion. Next time, maybe you can quote the Sopranos.

If you face the Angels in the ALDS or ALCS, MFY will lose. IF you face the Red Sox in the ALCS where Beckett gets 2 starts you will lose. Sorry, but CC and A-Rod will make you cry, they fold in the playoffs.

by SoxAcumen on Aug 9, 2009 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions

knee-jerk reaction?

is it a knee-jerk reaction that Boston is 8-14 since the All-Star Break? is it a knee-jerk reaction that they’ve lost 8 1/2 games in the standings in less than a month? i don’t get your logic.

you said that “l like the Red Sox much more than the Yanks to win the WS”, and that frankly is laughable at this moment. you can take Beckett, that’s perfectly fine. there aren’t many (if any) pitchers i would take over him in a big game. take Lester too – he’s been great. but you’ll need more than Beckett and Lester in a five-game or seven-game series (and i’m sure your Sox fan brethren would agree with that). do you turn to the fragile Clay Buchholz and his 1.97 WHIP in Game 3? i suppose Brad Penny and his 5.20 ERA goes Game 4? do you take the training wheels off early and call-up Michael Bowden (3-5 in Triple-A) in the middle of a pressure-filled pennant race? if not, i guess the Sox can wait for Wakefield to get healthy and a ridiculously overrated Dice-K to return.

i wouldn’t take the Yankees 1-2 punch of CC/Burnett (22-12, 3.77 ERA) over Beckett/Lester (22-11, 3.44 ERA), thought they’re close. the difference is that the Yankees have a 3 (Pettite) and a 4 (Joba) – the Red Sox don’t have that right now. also, the Yanks lineup is better and surprisingly, their bullpen has been better too. that’s the reality of the situation right now.

there’s plenty of baseball (like Lupica said, even though you obviously didn’t understand) and things can change, but this “all is well in Red Sox land” attitude of yours is not only misguided, it’s delusional.

like i said before, i’m not trying to be a jerk, or pick a fight. i’m just trying to have a discussion. i think the “personal bitches” comments were a bit unnecessary, especially considering your team’s current situation.

by SBakerTheTouchdownMaker on Aug 9, 2009 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Aside from the fact that a month is a pretty small sample size...

And 22 games is even smaller, so yeah, you’re kinda knee-jerking there. Then again, you’re citing W-L record WAY too much.

by bdalebs on Aug 10, 2009 1:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Plus you can't say the Yanks bought

another title when we never bought one in the first place. We’ve tried to buy them ever since Lu-Gon ended the dynasty years ago. Those old teams were built the right way, through the farm with smart trades and a few free agents sprinkled in. Since then it’s been overpaid bandages on top of overpaid bandages, all to no avail.

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

by CasanovaWong on Aug 9, 2009 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Semantics, but...

Maybe the “another” was about the attempt, not the title?

I did not drive all the way from Nova Scotia to Boston to watch losses.

My Yankees buddies are chirping. I’m going to the game on Tuesday.

Giving credit where its do

For the first time, I actually saw something from Clay Buchholz. I thought he was going to get hammered by the MFY this start, but he finally showed some heart and pitched a good game. He did what he needed to do, keeping the game close and made some solid pitches when he needed too.

For the first time I see there might be a future for this kid. I just hope he learns from this and builds some confidence in his non-curveball pitches.

P.S. Celts with my favorite players of all time, SHEED!!!! Oh yeah, I cannot wait for the 4th quarter, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, Rondo, KG and SHEED lineup. I might actually care about pro basketball again.

Not as bad as it seems

I realize lots of fans have panicked, and it’s no fun losing ground to the Yankees. But there’s lots of positive news.

1) The game-one blowout? That, at least, signaled the end of the Smoltz experiment. No surprise to see the guy get hammered, but hey, now he’s gone. Whoever takes his place will be an improvement, so things are looking up there.

2) The Beckett loss? Yeah, tough loss. But it’s not like the team wasn’t competitive. Lots of character, lots of heart shown all around. Especially from the ’pen.

3) The Buchholz loss? Uh, did you NOTICE how well Clay did under pressure? That’s an extremely positive sign, and outweighs the loss, in my book. (SoxAcumen is dead on about this.)

“If the Yanks win today you could reasonably say the divisional race is over.”

That’s what Yank analysts were saying when the Yankees were 0-for-whatever against the Sox. They said the season was over. They were wrong. So is this.

“With the Sox upcoming brutal svhedule , if they lose this game”

Wrong again. The Yankees’ schedule is FAR worse than the Sox’.

I like Lester over Petite today. It’s a long way from over. But here’s what the Sox need to do the rest of the way:

1) Replace Ortiz at DH. That ship has sailed.
2) Get Reddick out there in left, or to spell Drew and Ells. Do NOT put Youk out there again, unless it’s in Fenway (where he can handle it).

by Mister Snitch on Aug 9, 2009 2:33 PM EDT reply actions

totally agree with your post

There are some positives to take from this series. Beckett was freaking nasty against the Yanks, Buchholz really stepped up and proved he should be in the rotation, our bullpen for the most part, at least the guys who will be in the playoffs, were great.

When Wake and Bay get back things will change for the better.

All that matters is getting to the playoffs. Beckett will take care of the rest. He is still the best playoff pitcher on any playoff team. If the Angels, Red Sox, Yanks and Tigers make the playoffs. Sox get Detroit a team that we can beat and the Angels get to do their thing with NY. Making a LAA v. Boston ALCS, which I am always going to take the Sox.
