GT: Red Sox @ Yankees - Aug. 6

Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees, Aug 6, 2009 7:05 PM EDT

If you pay attention to any series in August, this is the one.

The Red Sox start a four-game set against the Yankees in New York tonight at 7 p.m. John Smoltz will be on the hill for game one against the Yanks' Joba Chamberlain.

The Yankees lead the Sox by 2.5 games in the AL East. If the Sox can pull off a sweep, the season series would stand in the Sox's favor 12-0 and the lead in the East would swing. While at this point a split would be nice, I think we can all hope for the best and ask for a sweep of the Yanks.

Mr. Smoltz, show us what you got.

I hear that

I’ll be thrilled with a split and have the Sox still contending for at minimum a wild-card spot. I hate Chamberlain and would love to see the Sox rip him.

No, I have a friend here

she just went home. Both of us are disgusted but we feared this was going to happen tonight.

Nice job, Theo – Yanks get A.J. & C.C. over the winter and we get Smoltz.

Hold off judgement for a few years...

Yeah, but by then

they’ll have some championship rings on those aged fingers, and we won’t
What’s wrong with winning NOW? You also forget the Yankees have a bottomless pit of money so if Burnett or Sabbathia lose it some day, they’ll buy two other top pitchers to replace them. We already have people you describe, too (big salaries/little or no production). You want proven talent now instead of waiting for prospects to deliver. Ask the Celtics, who went out and got proven stars and – boom, a championship! (and another if KG hadn’t got hurt).

The future is NOW, as one famous coach put it years ago.

by ccthemovieman on Aug 7, 2009 9:07 AM EDT up reply actions

It's about balancing the present and future.

I’d rather have a 20% chance every year for the next 10 years than a 50% chance this year and a 5% chance for the next 9 years.

Petitte said he did it to heal and came out front about the needles. Ortiz wouldn’t lie to Boston like that. But who knows? I may be an idiot for saying this in 24 hours.

Sox-Rays rivalry

Tampa resident. Sox fan. Went to the extra inning, Longoria game the other night and wrote a piece on it.

Would love to hear what you guys think.

I'm stuck down here too.

Looks good from the first two ‘graphs. I’ll give it a look.

by bdalebs on Aug 6, 2009 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Without reading it, I'm guessing no.

First off, I hate playing the Rays. I don’t hate the Rays. They’re a small-market team which played the MLB salary game the right way. They have some really good young players who don’t have a lot of ego. If they were in any other division, or hadn’t played the Sox, I would’ve been cheering for them last year.

Second off, they just don’t have the fanbase for it.

Third off, it’s only year 2 of their success, and with less money, they’re unlikely to keep being consistently competitive.

What I will say is that I hate Tropicana. It is truly awful.

by Ben Buchanan on Aug 6, 2009 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Meh.

The only reason a “rivalry” is forming is because the fans that are jumping on either bandwagon feel like they have to jaw with any fan of another team. It’s ridiculous at my school sometimes, which is why I require anyone that wants to talk ball with me to list at least 10 players from their “favorite” team.

by bdalebs on Aug 6, 2009 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I do that too with all the bandwagon fans who want "hang out" with me at lunch or something just b/c we are both Sox fans. WTF?

It's bad in Florida

Last year when they made the play off it was horrible. All the Rays shirts and caps came out. From people who don’t even watch baseball, I really don’t get it.

by bdalebs on Aug 6, 2009 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I really don't buy into the Rays/Soxs rivalry.

You have one good season doesn’t = a rivalry. It was being pushed by the Florida media, and the easily swayed fans.
